Homemade Star Trek phaser is powerful enough to pop balloons

Where's my away team at? Starfleet Command has discovered a planet full of vicious balloons, and Jay "Scotty" Rob has modified the classic phaser pistol from The Original Series to be able to pop 'em left and right.

Check it all out in the video above. It looks fairly harmless as he pans the beam across the room, though the balloons probably don't think so. Well, harmless unless you go and do something silly, like aim it at your eye. (Here's a spoiler for you: don't do it.)

I probably need counseling, but dag nabbit, this is pretty cool.

By MadLyb at 7:26 PM ON 01/15/10

Awesome.

But, I prefer the Red Rider version.

By allergygal at 7:41 PM ON 01/15/10

That's very cool. I think I need to make one.

By PungaA at 7:42 PM ON 01/15/10

I WANT ONE !

By Gozer at 11:25 PM ON 01/15/10

Jeez, that dude has some fat fingers and hands.

By Paul at 12:35 PM ON 01/16/10

I'm building and mounting a few of these on the back of my car so I can laser the people who drive behind me with their brights on.

By CJW at 12:44 PM ON 01/16/10

Set phasers to irritate.

I want one.

By roshinobi at 12:54 PM ON 01/16/10

This guy needs to sell them. I'm sure there's a large market of people, myself included, who see this, want one, but are not patient enough to make their own.

By Handy at 12:59 PM ON 01/16/10

what is the other Utilities
it seems just for fun

By N'Duku at 1:26 PM ON 01/16/10

I am very imblessed! Where to buy please? Someone tell?

By Perchik at 7:47 PM ON 01/16/10

For the record, this is just a laser. There's a lot on the internet about green/blue lasers popping black balloons.

By roshinobi at 8:50 PM ON 01/16/10

No, it's not just a laser. It's a laser that gives you an opportunity to act like William Shatner.

By IceCKryss at 8:58 PM ON 01/16/10

You... mean... like... this?

By robcoe at 12:35 AM ON 01/17/10

I dont want to buy one, but I would love to see the parts list for it so I could make something similer.

By specialK at 3:05 PM ON 01/17/10

Set phasers to 'popping black ballons'!

By sowhatu at 4:45 PM ON 01/17/10

so, if it pops a balloon in under 1 second,
what can it do to a person? or any other kinda "object"?

By Vesper at 8:26 PM ON 01/17/10

KipKay did this a long time ago.

By Imperius Rex at 8:30 AM ON 01/18/10

Wait, it's a laser that let's me act like William Shatner? I get to bang green chicks!? I'm in!

By Madman at 1:59 PM ON 01/18/10

Man, just think how much fun this would be as you walk around at Disney.

By Meezer at 11:36 AM ON 01/19/10

"an opportunity to act like William Shatner"? I can do that with a few bags of Dorito's.

By EMMA LASER at 9:59 PM ON 01/20/10

You unfortunately cannot own a laser that powerful without special permit. it also will not work well in daylight and only works on black balloons. It will start black paper on fire and can blind you in 3 seconds without special goggles

By H.G. Wells at 2:30 AM ON 01/21/10

Cool, but dangerous. People will be burning their own, and other people's, eyes out at an alarming rate now. Because there are WAY too many Idiots in the world. (and many of them are what some people would consider "smart" or "intelligent") Ignorance is no excuse, so, no, I will not excuse you. Idiot.

By Songbird J at 3:43 AM ON 01/21/10

COOOOOOOLLLLLLL!!!!!!! I've been waiting for these to come out for real! After all, we have flip cell phones now that are pretty much inspired by the old Star Trek communicators. And now the Iphones and Blackberries that collect and relay information as well as communicate. Next! Transporters! Can't wait!

By Snoo at 4:03 AM ON 01/21/10

EYE PROTECTION!! Seriously..do not leave this component out of your plans. See how the beam reflected off of chrome parts? Treat it like a regular firearm as well. No pointing at kids, dogs, airplanes etc..

By Mulder at 5:22 AM ON 01/21/10

Its just laser in a phaser toy .

By XTrust_No1X at 5:51 AM ON 01/21/10

Oh wonderful! I can see these showing up at sporting events, and the minute some nutjobs team starts losiing, it's"Let blind the pitcher for the other team, Yea!!!" And, forgettaboutit if terrorists get ahold of one of these, hands it to their tech people, and the next thing you know, planes are falling from the skies! Making or possessing them should be made illegal, unless it is made for our military, then I don't have a problem with it!

By Giest at 7:18 AM ON 01/21/10

Hell, if it will pop a balloon, it will pop an Eyeball.

I want one too.

By UltraJoe at 7:52 AM ON 01/21/10

Don't phase me, bro'!

By ozman at 9:01 AM ON 01/21/10

Emma, most of your points are correct, but not the part about the permits, at least not in the United States. However, it is a felony to point that laser at an aircraft in flight and doing so will put you on a terrorist watch list until you die. The same laser diode that makes this "phaser" work also makes the blu-ray player work, the only significant difference is that in the blu-ray player, the beam is completely contained (making it a "Class 1, eyesafe" laser device). This one is far from eye safe.

By Rengaw at 9:10 AM ON 01/21/10

I think it's amazing that it just pops balloons, how long does everyone think before a mass production stronger version that rivals the sci-fi one on StarTrek is made for the military and police, personally i think it would be better because it will be less messy than bullets and easier on the ears but what worries me is all the dead PS3 and players that kids will be ripping apart to make these before even the military get them and the kids figure a way to get max power into them to burn down all the neibourhood houses from their livingroom windows.

By Streaky at 9:29 AM ON 01/21/10

I gots to get me one 'o' THESE!!!!!!!!!!

By Mookada at 9:39 AM ON 01/21/10

Ha! It's a Blu-ray gun.

I love it. I'll take a box of 10.

By ghosty191 at 10:33 AM ON 01/21/10

I love it that it has the same sound effects as the "real one" on ST:TOS. I have got to have one so I can get the stray cats out of my house. You know, the ones that have taken over the dog door and painted a white "X" on my front door, meaning free food in catoknees. I have got to have one of those!!! Zap! One less cat mess! "Yeah!"

By TangoHotelXray at 10:58 AM ON 01/21/10

we finally have it

the "light" to keep and bear arms

I love it

By talk2velda at 11:16 AM ON 01/21/10

I think I need one of these. Yep, yep, yep, I'm pretty sure I need one.

By glasshouse at 4:56 PM ON 01/21/10

totally cool counseling here i come hahahahah.

By monkeycat1952 at 5:58 PM ON 01/21/10

You'll just shoot your eye out kid!

By pippin at 10:31 PM ON 01/21/10

Man! You are all total GEEKS . . . and I love you all!

By gipper at 1:57 AM ON 01/22/10

To Rengaw and XTrust_No1X,

Are you being sarcastic? First of all, this is from a Blu-Ray burner, not player, so it's stronger than a PS3. Second, it's just a BluRay laser in a toy phaser. There's 1000's of these lasers out there already. ...just not in a toy phaser. The terrorists already have access to this measly weapon if they want it.

Did you notice that the guy had to focus it? The laser *alone* was not enough. At twice the distance, the balloon probably wouldn't have popped with the same focus adjustment... or it would take much longer. (partly due to the difficulty of holding the laser steady on one spot at that distance).

And you know what? Kids are already ripping apart PS3's to make purple lasers. Been going on for a couple years now!

By Fortyseven at 2:49 PM ON 01/22/10

The graphics on this FPS are amazing!

By blkrichy at 7:36 PM ON 01/22/10

hmmmm... wonder how it would do on fake breast implants. AND this puts a whole new twist on stealing candy from babies... just bust their ballons

By Rengaw at 11:41 AM ON 01/23/10

To gipper

Yeah i did actually know all that and it's not the first one i've seen but i was trying to be a little funny about it, I'm a huge Startrek fan and i know everything they did on that show has or will come to pass believe it or not, I actually believe we will surpass it in some tech ways too, i'd really just like to get my hands on a personal Data bot so he could take care of my business and give me a challenge at video games lol

By Nestor at 5:52 PM ON 02/10/10

Makes you wonder what tech people will have access to in a decade or so...

By Jacob at 3:10 AM ON 02/19/10

set phasers to sting!
