Translator glasses lets you see what other people are saying

Translator glasses lets you see what other people are saying

Having a device that automatically translates other languages on the fly has been a sci-fi dream for years now, but we seem to be edging ever closer to having the technology on hand to make it a reality. NEC's new Tele Scouter is a retinal-display gadget that translates what people say to you, then displays the translations as text on your glasses.

Unfortunately, it looks pretty bulky, requiring a computer to be hooked up to the glasses to do the heavy lifting. And even then, the translations aren't really good enough to make wearing this thing in a foreign country practical. But someday, my friends. Someday.

"What does the Scouter say about the price of that Japanese toy robot?" "Its over 9000 yen!"

Translate this Japanese model!-- "I want to have your baby."

I wonder if the people the came up with this were thinking "Hey, why not?" This is seriously impractical and ridiculous. Impractical because there's no way anyone who wears glasses would want to add the weight of a camera onto their already heavy specs. Its ridiculous simple because any mobile device could do this and be far less ridiculous looking. Just a thought.

uh, monica, that's not a camera, it's a heads up display which displays real time text translations of what's being said

Nappa: Vegeta, what does the scouter say about his power level?
Vegeta: It's over NINE THOUSAAAAAAAAAND!

hey...wearing this one is too heavy and imagine not all of translated words are correct..Every People and Nations have their own Jargon too...

Dude... Gumsandals... I'm assuming that your used the Mr. literally so the question becomes... how might you have a baby?

also lmgtfy.com says that 9000 yen is about 98 USD. Not bad if it almost works. Make it universal and make it alter how your brain hears language... then call it a babelfish and I'll buy one no matter how little I have a use for it.

But for $98 it probably doesn't work at all.

Once again, technological advances seek to replace or restructure entire professions. In this case the profession of translator or interpreter. For a while, professional translators and interpreters will be needed for fine tuning the machine translators, however, the need for this is likely to be phased out if the vast improvement seen in speech recognition technology over the past decade is any indication of how translation software will improve. I don't understand why they would prefer to combine the pocket translator with retinal projection glasses, an emerging technology, rather than an earphone in which the words are spoken. This would seem like an easier feat. Perhaps limited bandwidth?
