Toshiba sends an armchair 98,268 feet up in stunning ad

In order to advertise its Regza SV LCD HDTV, Toshiba headed out to the Black Rock Desert. There, company reps hooked an armchair up to a huge helium balloon with some cameras attached. The resulting footage of the chair traveling up to the edge of space is absolutely amazing. Enough to make me want to buy one of their TVs? Not quite, but my God, what a great ad.

Truly worthy. It's Stanley Kubrickesque.

I was wondering what that flaming chair part sitting in my back yard was...

I can see tomorrow's headlines "International Space Station brought down by flying armchair"

That is very surreal.

Nice footage guys! Now why could we have not had that kind of footage from LACROSS.

By Eric at 6:55 AM ON 11/17/09

1) how did they get the footage back?
2) the camera would have frozen up even before getting at that altitude

hey, man... enjoy the fantasy.

It's just clever reuse of a project that has been repeatedly on frontpages of various online sites, including WIRED http://bear.sbszoo.com/bear3-4/bear4.htm

Cool, nevertheless!

Definitely clever, thanks for sharing! I hope that the TV their advertising lives up to all the hoopla! If not, you should check out a Sharp LCD television. They're a client of mine and have never disappointed me, even without the flying chair in space.

By Udtst at 12:32 AM ON 11/18/09

I swear officer I swerved because a chair fell out of the sky!!

By Wxfcstr at 11:20 AM ON 11/19/09

What symbolism! Carried aloft by the idea of owning this TV, shown the heights it can bring you, shattered by the sticker shock and rapidly brought to earth in disappointment.

By leodavinci at 5:10 PM ON 12/07/09

It would have cooler to have sent up the chair with one of their HDTVs in front of it with a camera shooting over the chair, and doing a pull back to reveal that everything we've been watching was on the TV as it was happening, and showing the chair and TV hanging in space.
