The world won't end in 2012, NASA argues

The world won\'t end in 2012, NASA argues

With the popcorn-fueled apocalypse entering theaters this Friday, there's one organization that's not so thrilled about the hysteria "2012" is drumming up. That'd be NASA, and the space agency is — as you'd imagine — reassuring everyone that it's going to be okay come 2012.

"2012" is cashing in on a gamut of wild doomsday scenarios revolving around the belief that the Mayan calender purportedly ends on December 21st, 2012. The date is thought to be significant to many besides, and there are even opposing theories swirling around claiming that the world won't end, but instead shift radically.

NASA is interested in particular with Nibiru — also known as Planet X, a fabled celestial object that "2012" addresses — which some believe may collide with or pass nearby the Earth, ending life as we know it.

According to physorg.com, "NASA insisted the Mayan calendar in fact does not end on December 21, 2012, as another period begins immediately afterward. And it said there are no planetary alignments on the horizon for the next few decades."

NASA posted a FAQ guide on its site, hoping to dispel some of the claims. The real proof, the agency says, is that no credible astronomers have discovered Planet X, and would have been able to track an object like it for a decade, at least.

From NASA:

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

So there you have it. Is NASA laying down the law, or is it all just some big cover up? Either way, we'll find out in 2012, just like we found out what was what back during y2k and also in 2003, when Planet X was originally supposed to mess us up.

If you plan for the world to continue after 2012, either you'll be wrong and it won't matter, or you'll be right and you'll be in good shape to go on with your life.

On the other hand, if you plan for the world to end in 2012, if you're right, no problem, but if you're wrong, you're going to have major problems scrambling to put things back together so you can continue your life.

By ummwhat at 6:14 PM ON 11/09/09

Why is NASA so bent out of shape over a fictional movie? For that matter, why is every reviewer, "scientist" and religious person freaking out about how horrible and misleading the movie is???? It's FICTION! Or is there really something to worry about that the common people don't know about...NASA?

By Davidrer at 6:15 PM ON 11/09/09

How does anyone know if the world will end or not ?

There is no way to know for sure if doomsday will ever be.

And maybe those Mayans were on to something who knows . All I know is that If its not anything to do with earth space or time ...then what did they see ?

By grenwodirishwica at 6:34 PM ON 11/09/09

I think that it is funny the way the human psyche is so facinated by the fear of apoalypes. it is the biggest threat to our existance that we know of....and its the only one that we no of no way to stop. not just talking about 2012 but the apocalypse in general. Humans are curious to see when it will all end. of all the creatures on the earth mammals are the most curious...of those species humans are the most inquisitive. So why then, would we not dote over the biggest question in existance. it is the one that will not be answered untill the day comes. Here is the biggest question that we should be asking ourselves....What comes next??? What will happen after the end comes....what will come after all of this....will it be all the same with the same choices made and the same lives relived....?? Or will it be a new world full of new wonders and new Questions........

By Vyor at 6:38 PM ON 11/09/09

How would the end of time be in 2012 even the myans said it would be after that. The worst thing that could happen at that date would be a large solar flair or earths poles (magnetic) shifting. And for that movie thing poeple realy do think that the world will end in 2012.

By Handle at 7:14 PM ON 11/09/09

Here's the lowdown on 2012 and the mayan calendar - no doomsday.

By Vortex22 at 7:24 PM ON 11/09/09

The Mayan calendar's long count period ends with the 26,000 year solar alignment with the Milky Way's galactic center and if this happens every 26,000 years then what happened 26,000 years ago? The world did not end, we would not be here if that were the case. Through the study of geology we also know how the continents have moved over millions and billions of years and in that time we have not seen a worldwide pole shift that causes mass extinction or a sudden and dramatic shift in our upper crust. Humans walked the Earth 26,000 years ago and did not go extinct. So the end of this next 26,000-year cycle will not bring the end or the destruction of the Earth. We are more likely to self-destruct because of our petty cultural differences, religious and racial intolerance for each other. Of course there is the chance of some sort of new or psydo-science being accepted and understood around 2012. I mean at one point human civilization thought the planet was flat and that the Sun revolved around us. I will give it to the Mayan’s because in a lot of ways they were more advanced in their understanding of math and astronomy then most of the world hundreds of years after their demise.

NASA is a two faced LIAR! They are the ones who ADMITTED that they had DISCOVERED Planet X, way back in 1983, shortly after launching their IRAS satellite ! Now, when they see that the lemmings are starting to get genuinely concerned, and might become uncontrollable, they are lying their asses off!
Planet X IS coming. The only question is regarding how much damage it's going to do! Go see the movie 2012. It will give you some idea of the preparations you will need to make, if you want to survive! Don't believe your lying gov.

By Person1 at 8:35 PM ON 11/09/09

I saw a Discovery channel show (Nostradamus 2012) that said the sun will appear to eclipse the center of the galaxy on about the same date. How did the Mayans figure that out?!?!? Thats probably what they based the Long Count on. Thx Vortex22

PS You also think the moon landings were faked, too, huh J J?

By Qaz' at 8:43 PM ON 11/09/09

Its funny, everyone North of the equator thinks were all going to die and everyone South of it is just going to party like on new years.

The world will never end, at least not any time soon. On the other hand humanity might end who knows but Im certain it will not be in 2012. Maybe some religious crazy country will trigger a Nuclear War.

By J J at 9:28 PM ON 11/09/09

Person 1: I think we went to the moon, alright. Our gov just lied about what was there. We now know that there is moisture in the soil, the moon HAS an atmosphere of sorts, and there are many monuments, and abandoned buildings, and bases on the Moon, as well as on Mars. Look for Obama to make an announcement of MAJOR proportions around the first of the year sometime, regarding some of this TOP SECRET stuff, that the gov has been keeping from us for DECADES!

Either way 2012 will be a fun year for watching the news ... either as the world falls apart ... or dozens of cults mixing cool aide with Al Gore. We have become such a country of crackpots ... it's embarrassing.

To: Pragmatist45, or whatever he-she-or it is: You ARE in the habit of "dissing people in emails", 'cause you just "dissed ' me. I guess by extrapolation, that makes you a LIAR, doesn't it? I have been researching our sun's brown dwarf sister, ever since it was brought to my attention about 2 years ago. I have read the accounts of it passing this way, every 3600 years, or so. I have done extensive research in the ancient writings of the Celts, and the ancient Egyptian and Jewish scribes. I've read the eyewitness accounts of Planet X's fly bys, and believe me, none of them were pretty. I have researched considerable astronomical theories, and subscribe to astrophysicist Michio Kaku's version of the solar flare MCEs that are going to happen FOR SURE in 2012! When the LAST "Y CLASS" storm hit the earth in the 1850s, it melted telegraph lines on the poles! We are definitely going to lose most of our satellites, and sensitive electronic equipment. Go ahead and ridicule people like me. I don't mind. You're going to be in the group that sustains the 50-90% population reduction, that the New World Order WANTS!
Heckle on. If you have some FACTS to back up your ignorant outlook, please post them, so we can see that you don't know a damn thing about what you're talking about.

By Brass Orchid at 1:46 AM ON 11/10/09

I had an aluminum foil hat for Hallow's Eve! It was supposed to keep the talk radio stations from using their control rays to beam hate thought into my head. Can't tell if it worked, since there isn't much talk radio on Saturday. And on that note, we can see why it is important to counteract misinformation. You may safely assume that there are equally qualified people attempting to modify the messages of FOX news and the various Marxist organizations attempting to build a utopia. Qualifications depend on standardized testing of doctrine, naturally.

2012 Doomsday and the Bible
2012 is speculated to be the End of the World based on the Mayan Calendar and other sources. If you are worried or unsure about it, then some (un)common sense along with a literal Bible prophecy breakthrough can help. Find out what kind of year 2012 will be: normal or prophetic. »» Jacques.

The End of the World will be late, like EVERYTHING else. Maybe by a decade or two, depending upon funding. Please be patient!

By Raymondjram at 6:57 AM ON 11/10/09

Science knows enough to dispel KNOWN possibilities. Science does not yet know everything, however.

Gravity is more than you think, and that super-massive black hole at galaxy center is a threat.
They have been given a credible reason why it is dangerous, by someone who actually understands the Infinite to Singular root of gravity. Math does not get you below zero. Neg numbers are not going below zero. Infinity is "beyond" zero. Neither of these are numbers.

NASA is not the best at predictions....

By Unkown at 8:11 AM ON 11/10/09

Science pretends astrology doesn't work, but it does.

They ignore this and and call anyone who points it out a kook. They will avidly deny anything you give them as proof. It is denial, not science.

They locked themselves into a little box of "what we know is enough to dispel anything we don't know"

well... we now know enough to know, that we don't know enough to know.

By Pax at 8:12 AM ON 11/10/09

... was going through the NASA FAQ linked in the article and for all the talk about science and facts, it reads more like an opinion piece.

Examples:

*"Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012."

Most readers of dvice are aware of the dangers that exist in space (black holes, radiation, meteors, solar flares, etc..). The statement above is false in the sense that we could conceivably be wiped out tomorrow by any number of things.

*"The story started with claims that Nibiru..."

Here NASA positions itself as experts for the 'Ancient Astronaut Theory' as related in various forms - most notably by Zecharia Sitchin in a series of books. I'm not sure where they came up with the date of May 2003 or December 2012... I read the books a long time ago and recall doing some of the math. According to what I recall, the planet in question is NOT suppose to do a fly-by until much, much later - perhaps another 100 years (I don't recall the exact time frame).

I'm not saying I believe in the Planet X theory - only that if you're going to discuss a subject matter - you should quote the sources and NOT pages put up by amateurs.

*"Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?"

Instead of discussing what most serious scholars believe (time for celebration), they merely assert the a new one would have been started. Where is the discussion of the previous calender in order to infer that a new one would follow? Why no mention of the first highly criticized scholar (and New Age follower) who first associated the end of the calender with the end of the world?

The answer... because they didn't bother to do any research here. It;s outside their area of expertise and the PR person was too lazy to spend the 10 minutes to pull this info out.

*"If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist."

Again... nothing obvious about this and a very un-scientific claim. According to the *sources*, Planet Nibiru isn't anywhere near enough to be tracked. Again... not that is even exists but they obviously haven't spent any time actually reading the source materials.

*"Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years."

While cycles are predictable now, when individual solar flares will occur and the severity of these flares are not.

I understand what NASA is trying to do, I just don't appreciate being spoken down to by lazy writing backed by what is suppose to be a highly respected organization. While I agree with them on the whole, their responses for most of the questions were very unscientific with very little research into specific claims.

A few months ago I was having fun with someone about the end times - focusing on 12/21/2012 and Solar flares (I had just seen the movie - The Knowing). The person I spoke to freaked out - seriously. Even if NASA or any other government agency had specific knowledge of the end of civilization, how many people would clamly go about their lives. How many millions or billions of people would completely wreck havoc the world over?

So yeah... nothing is going to happen on December 21, 2012......

By Eruaran at 8:18 AM ON 11/10/09

To Raymondjram:

Its Wormwood not "Woodworm". It means "bitterness"; Wormwood is the name of a plant and the name of the bitter-tasting extract derived from it. The following verses show how "wormwood" is used in the Bible.

"her speech is smoother than oil, but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword." - Proverbs 5:3-4

"He has filled me with bitterness; he has sated me with wormwood." - Lamentations 3:15

"Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall!" - 3:19

"O you who turn justice to wormwood and cast down righteousness to the earth!" - Amos 5:7

"But you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood" - Amos 6:12

"The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter." - Revelation 8:10-11

The celts couldn't write - they had an oral language, so there is no way you could research their ancient writings unless they were written down by the romans or the oral transcribed later, and then it would be bias and inacurate.

A calenDER is a machine in which paper or cloth is pressed between rollers to make it smooth and glossy. A calenDAR, on the other
hand is a system that shows time divisions as days, weeks, months and years. Big difference. I assume you meant the latter as, to my knowledge, the ancient Maya possessed no such device as the former.

To PAX: NASA was the one that STARTED all the hullabaloo about Planet X to start with, when they announced that they had FOUND it, way back in 1983, after launching their new IRAS satellite! (Infra Red Astronomical Satellite)

Their announcement appeared in the Washington Post for a few days, until they decided to "pull it"!
( they must have "run it by" the Brookings Institute)

Then in 1992, NASA held a PRESS CONFERENCE to announce that the orbits of Uranus and Neptune were having deviations in their orbits due to a "large outer solar system body, of 4-8 earth masses!" NASA went on to say that this large object was in a "highly tilted orbit, and was approximately 7 billion miles from our sun."

So which LIE is it going to be today, NASA? Planet X yes, or planet X no?

You can't have it both ways. Do we believe the TRUTH, or your DISINFORMATION LIES?

JJ,

Many of the History books I grew up with were filled with exagerations and lies. This trend continues in alot of the professional writing we see today - scientific research, media reports, etc... Then we have political writing, advertising, religion and fanboyism - all of which are of a similar vein.

The question isn't how well a particular site covers specific issues but how much crap needs to be shoveled off before some semblance of truth can be gleaned.

Alot of sites covering 2012 look and feel like those 'Get Rich Quick Sites' tugging at the user's emotions simply because the reader 'wants to believe'. Critical thinkers need to slam the sites that provide these half-truths and demand documentation, sources, the latest research - not defend exagerations and lies.

The issues surrounding NASA, IRIS and other planetary bodies is discussed (and cited) in the following wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nibiru_collision

To sum up (1983 findings, wiki): "further analysis revealed that of several unidentified objects, nine were distant galaxies and the tenth was "intergalactic cirrus"; none were found to be Solar System bodies."

Sitchin himself (who covered a ton of stuff in his books - Nibiru, Religion, Cloning, ExtraTerrestrials, dawn of civilization, etc.. via, what is now, highly criticized translations of sumerian texts) never said there would be a collision at any time near 2012. I did a little further research and it looks like NASA came up with their numbers (2003, 2012 collisions) based on the ramblings of a woman who is supposedly able to speak to aliens via an implant in her brain (also in the article above and elsewhere - nice job NASA... /s).

There are a few sites out there that specifically discuss the 1983 IRIS issues as a conspiracy. Those that I visited were sensationalistic - merely repeating the original news story and completely dismissing the updated reports and research conducted afterwards.

Could not find any _reliable_ source re: Orbital deviations of Neptune/Uranus as it relates to a massive object moving this way except for the common knowledge stuff (discovery of Pluto in the '30s based on orbital deviations of these planets). Do you have reliable sources we could follow up on?

Wow, people. Grab a book on physics, astronomy, and its history. Read something other than the internet, please.

The blackhole at the center of our galaxy is NOT a threat to us. Almost every galaxy observed in the known universe has one. In fact, ours is currently inactive as it does not have any outlying matter to consume. Quasars, which are some of the furhest bodies from us, are galaxies with active supermassive black holes at their center, throwing off immense amount of radiation and they STILL have billions of stars and planets circling them without much dire effect.

Guess what? Our galaxy is currently colliding with two other (yet small) galaxies. The univserse is a chaotic and destructive place: supernovae, GRBs, and other catastrophic events that work on a scale thousands or even millions of times larger than what our sun can produce in a solid minute.

When you actually sit down and study the science instead of reading and believing everything some two bit wack job on the internet tells you, you begin to realize that we are nestled in a very settled and inactive part of not only our galaxy, but the universe as well. That is why life was capable of forming here in the first place.

After the 1983 announcement, it was clear that their observations were mistaken by either distant galaxies, or even one of the MANY trans-neptunian objects in our outer solar system (Eris, Makemake, Orcus, Sedna, etc.). There are lots of plutoids in our neighborhood, as well as 3 distinct belts (asteroid, Kuiper, and Oort). You have to realize we aren't just 8 planets and a bunch of nothing. There is tons and tons of stuff in our solar system and they've been here for a very, very long time. If Nibiru were real, don't you think it would have destroyed us in one the many times it passed us in its orbit?

Whoa whoa whoa! Back up NASA! A few years ago you said that on that date the sun will line up with the center of the galaxy, and now you are saying that there won't be any alignments at all? I don't believe in 2012, but why the hell can't you guys make up your mind?

Here's the thing everyine, the moron Maya translators of the calendar are idiots. I found the truth and here it is for everyone. The reason 2012 is so specific is because the Maya ran out of space on the calendar. What they said was, "Continued on next stone" but the scientists and especially Nostradomians are too dumb to see that. There you go, I;ve solved the puzzle for you.

I hope they legalize weed before 2012. Either way when I die, I want to go like my dad, peacefully in his sleep.....not screaming like all the passengers in his car!
