The Box: QuickStart Guide

The Box: QuickStart Guide
Graphic by Chris Kalb

In The Box, when Cameron Diaz and James Marsden receive the eponymous object it's accompanied by a weird-looking dude who explains exactly what it is and how to use it. That's some service, but it could get cost-prohibitive for the manufacturer if it sent a personal assistant for every item sold.

That got us thinking: What the Box needs is a QuickStart Guide. If any sinister manufacturer wants to start making this gadget, feel free to use this insert. Just leave our names out of it.

Hell with the guilt. I'm an out of work engineer with bills to pay. I'd be slapping that sucker several times if I could.

That's the core of the ethical question the film is trying to portray. When you push the button, someone dies. The question is, what happens when another person pushes the button and it's your turn (or that of someone close to you) to be the "someone" who dies?

I give the filmmakers cudos for trying to make their audience think, but this idea seems way too shallow to sustain a 90-minute movie.

I remember this when it was a short in a twilight zone episode. Not sure how they are going to turn a whole move out of something that probably ran for 10-15 minutes originally.

Then again they have successfully made 90 min movies over 20 page doctor Seuss books.

I'm sure someone would be crazy enough to disassemble the thing, or perhaps even create a robot that will press the button 10 billion times in rapid succession..... sure you make a lot of money, but then again.... no one would be left to use the money.....

This ethical dilemma is stupid. A million dollars just isn't that inconceivable amount of money anymore. And I'd never trust the guy with half his face off. And I would rather be homeless than kill somebody.
