Sony builds a 280-inch 3D display

Sony builds a 280-inch 3D display

Sony is diving head-first into this whole 3D enterprise, betting the farm on everybody being really excited to wear 3D glasses whenever they watch TV or play video games. Their latest foray into the 3D realm? This 280-inch 3D LED display for public areas.

It sure looks impressive, but you've gotta wonder how much sense a public 3D display makes. I mean, wouldn't people just need to be carrying 3D glasses around just in case they came across it? For everyone else, it'll be the biggest blurry display they've ever seen.

Not going to happen. 1. The glasses give me a migraine in under ten minutes. 2. I'd rather go back to stone tablets than patronize Sony products.

The glasses are actually made so they do not produce headaches, plus I think it would be cool to see! Just think walking down the street and looking at a gigantic display of awesome things flying at you in 3D!

Well if we hit a time warp back to the 80's when there was always "that guy" who wore them everywhere, then atleast a few people could make use of it. Other then that i can't image this being used for much besides one of thoes jumbotrons at sports games (probably soccer like they are showing in the image,) but i don't think anyone will really care enough to use them. I mean honestly, do we really need that big of a 3D tv? If you could get one into your house then sure, but this is just to big for anyone to really use.

I totally agree this is an idiotic idea. Who is going to be carrying 3d glasses? I still don't want to wear them on top of my regular glasses at home. I'll enjoy 3D in the movies, it makes going to see them that much more special.

Until 3D TV comes without glasses, not interested.

Is it me or are u guys totally ignorant to the fact that 3dscreens where u dont have to wear googels exists?
for a technology site that seems pretty ironic.
The post mentiones nowhere the need for special glasses.
So i dare draw the intelligent conclusion that this screen dont need them.
Oh and for good measures iv'e seen one of those
3dscreens. you have to stand directly infront of the screen to get the effect, but its kind of impressive
that it can be done.

Why is someone using my handle with 2.0 attached -.-. Also the reason we are (or atleast I am) assuming you need glasses, is because there is no reason to market a 3D display that big if it is only 3D to the person directly in front. While they may have made some sort of break through that allows a full 3D view of a flat tv, but the article does not mention that, and i think that would be significantly more note worthy than Sony building a big tv. Speaking of which, I have no idea why they would print "The next age of programming is always from Sony." when this is nothing new and not that exciting (or at least not for the average consumer.)

I think the LED video wall is cool. As for the 3D thing taking off... well, I bet some people didn't think texting or web on your cellphone would be a good idea either, and look where these technologies are now!

The Dallas Cowboys new stadium used an LED video wall to showcase a 3D viewing during half time at a recent game. Frankly I wouldn't want to go to a football game to see a 3D video. I'm an Arizona Cardinals fan, and I find their stadiums LED video wall to be amazing showing replays etc. of the game and not 3D viewings of things. Any entertainment venue needs to reevaluate the use of their LED video walls, 3D is meant for movie theaters not arenas and stadiums.
