Today's the day Verizon rolls out the formidable Motorola Droid, the most capable contender to the iPhone's king-of-the-hill status yet. Also along for the rollout ride is its lesser Droid mate, the HTC DROID Eris. iPhone haters will be happy to know that the shiny new Droids can be procured online or in stores without having to wait in line.
Along with the big rollout today, there's a bit of news: Verizon counters a belated iPhone promise with its own tethering at a semi-reasonable $30 a month, letting you use your cellphone to access the data network on your PC or other devices. UPDATE: But Verizon is also dithering on tethering, saying it won't be available until sometime next year. Sheesh. Why is this so hard?
Tethering is great, but it ought to be offered for free on all 3G cellphones. I mean, aren't we paying enough?

Is it me, or does DVice REALLY want Apple to die... First they think the Zune HD will be the iPod killer, and now this? I admit it's a good phone, but this is getting way more hype then it deserves, just because Verizon said so?

I think the iphone gets way more hype than it deserves with all its crippled features.

People whine because dvice promotes apple too much and now ppl whine because they promote other things too much.

The crippled features is not Apples issue, it's ATT issue.

Motorola and Google have made an awesome phone that has a lot of features that the iPhone simply dosen't allow its ATT customers to get (or ATT dosen't allow its Apple Customers to get).
It's not Dvice's fault that this phone is amazing.

" the most capable contender to the iPhone's king-of-the-hill status yet"-
Please... Palm Pre, BlackBerry Storm, Google Android, Windows Mobile, Nokia... Ring any Bells? While I know there are plenty of good, no great smart phones out there including all of the above, with there own great features, none of them are iPhone "Killers". There will never be one. It's a myth, an urban legend like the Lochness Monster. Just like Sony, Microsoft, Samsung, or any other manufacturer never created iPod Killers.
A new groundbreaking smartphone comes out I'd say every 2 to 3 months with it's own new feature...i.e Multitasking, SureTouch Keyboard, "Amazing Google-Powered" Software. There will never be an iPhone Killer. Long Live the King!

While the iPhone is very popular (and a great device), you don't seem to realise that it is currently 4th in marketshare behind Nokia, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. Nobody needs to 'kill' it.
The iPhone is a great consumer phone, but it has some serious flaws that make it unsuitable for many people: no multi-tasking.
I need to run my IM app, and often one or two other apps in the background while using my phone for other things. This is a critical function for many people, and the iPhone doesn't do it.
It is very important to me that the only person who decides what software I can and can't run is ME. With the iPhone you only get to run software approved by Apple, and their approval process is based on some vague ideals of decency and protecting the profit of phone carriers.
The iPhone doesn't have a physical keyboard. While the touch screen on the iPhone is among the best, some people prefer a physical keyboard. Most phone manufacturers have a selection of touchscreen devices and keyboard/hybrid devices. With Apple, as usual, you do it Apple's way or not at all.

The iPhone is where it's at, because it's so user friendly. And being at the top for so long, it can't just fall. The everday person doesn't look at things like the more technology-saavy group does. People see how much their friends LOVE their iPhones so they buy one. Then, that persons friends see how they love it. It's an ongoing cycle. They won't care about the droid nearly enough, because apple's app store is far more famous. What about the application "Bump"? You fist eachother with iPhones in hand and it trades information (contacts, images, etc.). If I went and got a droid I couldn't do that or compare apps with friends. I'd rather go with the iPhone and it's crippled features, than get a droid and never actually use it.

"Is it me, or does DVice REALLY want Apple to die... " ROFDLOL, you really dont read this site much do you?

Im getting real tired hearing all this crap about which device is better. If it suits your needs then use it. The iphone is no better then the Motorola Droids. Each has their own problems.

This the reason an Iphone is not for me. Instead of fist bumping how about I just send you the info so we both don't look like tools...
