Construction on the Colorado River Bridge — part of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project — began back in '05, but it's finally at a place where it's ready to show off. It's supposed to be finished by the end of next year and, when it is, it'll bridge the gap of the Black Canyon, stretching nearly 2,000 feet and standing 900 feet over the chasm. That 1,060-foot, concrete twin-rib arch you see there is almost finished and will support the bridge.
You can even check in on the construction in real-time via a webcam installed by the bridge. See more in the gallery below.

Agreed... I'd jump off it if I were into BASE jumping.
Someone spammed my workplace with these pictures.
It was cool, but still spam.

cool, I didn't even know about this.
I've Never been to the Hoover Dam...maybe I'll plan a trip in a couple years and check this thing out while I'm there.

I call it the Osama Bin Laden Memorial Bridge.
My whole life, people debated about making this bridge. Finally, on September 12, 2001 they decided it was a necessity, and things move forward pretty quickly after that.
Now, it's taken them as long to build this bridge as it took to build the dam in the first place. I mean, I'm happy it's there. It'll save lots of time getting to Arizona.

I really don't see why it's such a traffic disaster going around on the dam. C'mon, we need SIDEWALKS in my neighborhood, and the government builds a Hoover Dam bridge?
I mean, the dam IS a bridge, you see what I mean? (no offense CJW)
By Shinri at 8:56 PM ON 11/09/09
@Person1
After 9/11 they banned truck traffic from going over the dam, because they were worried that a terrorist would explode a truck bomb in the middle of the dam, releasing all of the water.
Since then trucks have had to use a huge detour on the route from Las Vegas to Phoenix.
Hence the new bridge.

This bridge's structure looks a lot like "Viaducto 1" one of three that once connected Caracas (which is in a mountain valley some 800 meters up) to the Caribbean coast for more than 40 years ... and the Venezuelan government let it fall on 2006 while denying there was problems with it.

OBL Memorial Bridge gets my vote. Everyone knows that if there is anything terrorists hate more than our freedom it's large man-made bodies of water in remote locations.

Can you guys put up a high def pic of the whole shabang? I'd love to see all the details in the pic
By Daisuke at 4:06 PM ON 11/10/09
The bridge construction is a preemptive strike for traffic because the damn itself is long over-due for an overhaul. Building a bridge will allow vehicles to go through while construction of a new damn takes place in the next decade.
By smurf at 11:17 PM ON 11/10/09
Well the bridge is actually an improvement of the route for trucks to and from Vegas and Kingman AZ which has a large rail connection to the rest of the country. I have family that live 30 minutes from this thing and travel to see them regularly. the dam is a road block because of the HUGE amount of pedestrian traffic and looky-loos in cars that take pics while they are driving across.
By Mike in Vegas at 2:36 AM ON 11/11/09
Will this be done before Lake Mead is empty? We're using so much water here in Vegas that we won't need the dam before too long.
By SGT King US ARMY at 3:07 AM ON 11/11/09
@Smurf: don't you just hate those looky loos? lol. thats what causes the most traffic on the highways here in the US. a fender bender happens on the free way and everyone decides to look! "OMG someone just got in a fender bender!" i say oh well maybe they shouldve been paying more attention! and who cares if someone got in a fender bender, that doesnt mean that everyone driving past has to slow down and look, call their friends or family and let them know something happened, or call the local radio station saying that theres a fender bender on the I-5. TO ALL DRIVERS THAT ARE LIKE WHAT I JUST SAID: GET A LIFE AND CONTINUE DRIVING! DO NOT SLOW DOWN BECAUSE THAT HOW ROAD RAGE CAN START AND THEN YOU'LL BE LOOKING AT YOURSELF IN A FENDERBENDER! ok... ive had my spheal. : ) lol

Nice images. I have been working on an extended photographic essay on the bridge since March 2009. If you would like to check out additional imagery on the Bridge at Hoover Dam, please visit my website at: jameystillings.com.

Okay there's supposed to be good and bad mid Easterners. You know those Truck Inspection Truck weigh stations? How about checking all those people on the roads while checking the trucks? Homeland security. And Rubberneckers? There should be a fine for obstructing traffic. If you can't provide assistance, MOVE ALONG. YOU'RE NOT GOD. I gave up using the bypass to go to work for that reason. And travel over the hill mountain just to avoid the slowdowns jams. This route of travel also saves on mileage and gas.
