Can these sunglasses really stop bullets?

Can these sunglasses really stop bullets?

These are Japan Self-Defense Force Sunglasses, and apparently they're officially endorsed by Japan's military. Maybe it's because the JSDF just likes the way they look, or perhaps it's the strong lenses. Each one is boasts the ability to withstand an impact from an object 0.3 inches (or 6.55mm) traveling at 106 miles per hour. Those specs probably won't mean much against a 9mm bullet speeding toward your eye at over 1,000 miles per hour, but it does make for a neat image.

These JSDF shades can also withstand a blow from all the dollar bills that will be flying out of your wallet: all 317 of them. Check out a bonus shot after the jump.

they can stop bullets pictured above without any problem - that bullet is not fired - it's still in it's case .
I guess it's thrown at the glasses

Amazing!!!!It is nice if have a live demo. If possible then can anyone put a video of the above picture so one can get the real idea.

Sounds like they might do well with keeping flying debris away from your eyes.

There wouldn't be much point making them bullet proof unless you were going to do the whole face anyway.

By karpet at 1:27 AM ON 11/18/09

Well I am not that impressed. A common paintball moves at 204 miles per hour and is .68 inches in cross section, twice what these glasses are rated at according to the above specs. I will stick to my V-Force goggles.

@dexter: Maybe the round in the picture is one of those fancy 2-stage rounds we've been hearing so much about. Must work like a rocket or something.

There's no sense in such sunglasses — even if they stop bullets, what are you going to to with your neck broken?

By Ebee at 6:47 AM ON 11/18/09

The article says these glasses are able to handle a hit from a object upto 3 inches long and traveling up to 106 mph, that is not going to stop a bullet but these glasses would be useful for stopping flying debris like small rocks, wood chips etc. I would pay $317.00 to possibly save an eye, they are pretty useful.

@Karpet: that 204 miles/hr from a paintball gun is the muzzle velocity though, and you should be well acquainted with how quickly that speed drops. Paintballs aren't exactly rock hard either...well not the good ones anyway.

I'm not saying I'd ever go onto a paintball field wearing these (even if a field was dumb enough to allow it), but that's no reason to discredit them entirely.

Big deal, Gargoyles had this ability 20 years ago.

By BoredGuyAtWork at 1:36 PM ON 11/18/09

I suppose these glasses could work for a safety goggle replacement, but that would be a terrible idea since goggles work better and protect you entire eye (not just the front.) While it's good to make more durable sunglasses i think making ads of bullets being thrown at them might be a little extreme. But atleast they look good, as for the bullet proof thing, i think i would prefer a vest, or a tactical helmet (not that i have or need them.)

By Random Butthole at 8:34 PM ON 11/18/09

I prefer not shooting bullets at my face.

By comet at 10:34 PM ON 11/18/09

Okay, but can it resist getting scratched?

We need this!

The oakley flak jacket and M-fram are comparable to these, I have seen first hand that the oakleys will stop shrapnel and debris, and they wrap around your face.

Sunglasses are a very good accessory for your otherwise already perfect outfit. However, besides adding style to your look, they also serve other functions. For one, they protect your eyes to harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Exposing your eyes to harmful UV rays from sunlight has been known to cause the development of cataracts and the degeneration of a person?s vision.
