Will Apple's Magic Mouse make up for its past mouse troubles?

Will Apple\'s Magic Mouse make up for its past mouse troubles?

I've always hated Apple's mice. It took them way too long to integrate secondary buttons and scroll wheels, and when they finally came out with a mouse with those features (the ironically named Mighty Mouse) it was an overdesigned, unwieldy product that was difficult to clean.

So now that Apple has unveiled Mighty Mouse's successor, the Magic Mouse, I approach it with a mix of enthusiasm and skepticism. The Magic Mouse is definitely something different, bringing the iPhone's multi-touch capability to the mouse. Now you simply slide your finger along the mouse to perform various actions — vertically to scroll (it can supposedly read the momentum of your finger for faster or slower scrolling) or horizontally to, say, browse through tabs in Safari or pictures in iPhoto. That's pretty cool, and it eliminates one of the big problems in the Mighty Mouse: the scrollwheel, which would invariably get gunked up quickly.

The flatter design appears more finger-friendly, too, looking a little more like gaming mice from brands like Razer. It pairs to your Mac (Leopard or later) via Bluetooth and is powered by a pair of AA batteries. It's on sale today for $69 — a decent price that may even bring skeptics like me back. What do you think?

So the mouse doesn't move, just your fingers do? sounds like a multi-touch touchpad to me.

By Tac at 2:04 PM ON 10/20/09

But no the mouse moves too, just the top of it is a multitouch sensor, so its a move and click mouse that does other cool stuff.

I think its super sexy... but how about the name, might as well call it Mickey mouse

No pinch to zoom? I still have to hold the control key?!? FAIL. hopefully this is updatable in the software. i'll still get one :)

By Neotyguy at 2:33 PM ON 10/20/09

Control key for what? Right button?

You do know that they allowed you to enable the right mouse button since about 5 years ago... Right? Don't be an M$ fanboi.

The only think I dislike about this mouse is that it can't connect to Windows yet. I will hold out until Apple updates the bootcamp mouse drivers...

By Neotyguy40 at 2:35 PM ON 10/20/09

Ohh, I'm sorry, I misread what you typed. You meant to zoom in...

I agree, they should update that.

I love comments like this. Wow 5 whole years with 2 buttons!

By PTRICKY at 3:28 PM ON 10/20/09

I think a low to the 'ground' mouse would be difficult to grip and move side to side. Thoughts?

By Withidread at 4:40 PM ON 10/20/09

I'm sure it tested great in the lab.

"I love comments like this. Wow 5 whole years with 2 buttons!"

Sorry, but if we are bringing up how bad Apple did long ago, then may I remind you how bad Win XP was at that time? Slow, virus-prone, and couldn't run on anything.

@nilus, if you start allowing arguments like that, we could start comparing the ages of other M$ features and quite frankly the computer world should be judged on IS, not WAS. Unless you really want to start comparing the number of innovations that went apple first MS second. But then we would have a UNIX geek show up and point out how much really started there. Then some dude would show up from XEROX. Nah let's just skip it, and leave the comment for what it was, a misguided attempt to point out the outdatedness in the thought, and was quickly correct due to the misunderstanding involved.

Now as for this neat product, I hope it is as good as it could be, nd I will have to test one out before I come to conclusion. Though for what it's worth I do have usage of both of my hands so using command control and option to modify clicks is really no big deal. But I can see how it could get in the way of certain activities. And in some circumstances is less then ideal. Preferably all of the gestures could be assigned, though I doubt that it is an available option today. Fortunately it will be software upgrade not a hardware one.

alright fanboys... enough of the BS.

We all know that Apple somewhat invented the GUI (which was later copied by Microsoft and then popularized through said channel).

So back to the topic at hand... Multi-touch mouse... Awesome. I think my 6 year old Logitech has some of the features this thing does (but only with the stupid Windows driver thingy and use of hotkeys).

It was a Logitech MX500 (er something like that... cordless optical rechargeable with 8 buttons). I used all 8 of the buttons on that thing (wore them out actually). And the contacts for the charge feature rusted badly (after only two years of heavy gaming).

Still, this mouse has a cool idea. Probably too small for my large hands, but hey... Can't have everything.

It seems like a touchpad that has to be pushed around a desk for some reason. Why not just sell a bluetooth touchpad?

By yhc731 at 10:34 AM ON 10/21/09

so what if your finger is over the "touchpad" and you move the mouse wont that move a lot of crap around especially in design programs too

By thisisonlyatest at 5:22 PM ON 10/21/09

There's a vid for this on techeblog.com (http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/apple-magic-mouse-multi-touch-demonstration)

It's way sweeter than I expected. I imagine all the features would take some getting used to, but still nice. Make one for BSD/Unix and I'm in... Screw Windows as of late... Security through bscurity is my new motto...

I'm switching to whatever minimalist distro I decide to like this week.

By Macnut42 at 11:13 PM ON 10/21/09

I'll have to break down and get one eventually. I can see this being a great addition to a laptop. I can see why they favored the control key and one finger slide over the pinch zoom. Can you imagine how awkward it would be to keep the thing in one place while trying to pinch? But it would have been nice if they would have offered it as an option. Maybe it had something to do with the curved surface that caused some sensor issues. Who knows. Maybe one day they'll figure it out.

Cheers!

show driver for win7?!?

By SevenV6.1 at 10:27 PM ON 10/22/09

Maybe just wait until Apple releases a touch screen computer with no mouse and call it innovative, then find some method to discount the fact that Microsoft already had it before them. Better yet, turn it around and find a minor difference and prove to yourself that Microsoft stole the idea... LOL I'll start my egg timer.

By SevenV6,1 at 11:03 PM ON 10/22/09

To jump off my tangent... I like the mouse, and may get one if they make a Windows driver. It's simply a cool idea and a elequent implementation. My only issue with Apple isn't really with Apple, but the jaded fanbois feeling they are fighting some "good cause" for a company that would deny them a two button mouse due to the arrogance of the company's leading figure and his inability to bite the bullet, and accept it as a good idea for so long. This act in no way took into account the consumer's view for far too long.

By mbdc at 3:40 PM ON 10/23/09

This is how much Apple is innovating and shaping the computer world.. we're getting excited by a mouse!

By Kaostika at 3:35 AM ON 10/29/09

I have one that came with my new mac. It is great. Makes browsing easier with a Swipe to go back. Scrolling is just better.

By new hidden object games at 6:28 AM ON 10/29/09

Looking really sleek and sexy. Perhaps in future the scrolling function is going to be integrated into the keyboard.. like a macbook or laptop.

By homa at 3:09 PM ON 10/29/09

Agree with the comment about the bluetooth touchpad. While I like this and I'll likely to get it soon, I don't understand why they heck in need to push my touchpad around now? Why couldn't they just take that awesome touchpad of their out of a macbook pro and connect it via the bluetooth. To me it feels like this is exactly what this is, except for some reason I need to push it around.

By rwindmann at 4:22 PM ON 10/29/09

I used it in their Apple store, and man, it is SWEET. Can't buy it yet unless you buy an entire system. Guy in the store said it will be generally available in about a month, and that you can order it online and get it in two weeks, which is what I did...

And don't get me started on the new 27" Imac...

Never wanna have a scroll wheel/ball again! Apple re-invented the mouse.....again! ;)
For everybody who's happy with (only) two buttons i strongly recommend to give it a try!!
