Nissan Land Glider leans into turns like a motorcycle

Nissan Land Glider leans into turns like a motorcycle

Nissan's ultra-light, ultra-thin Land Glider concept car is a bit like a Smart Car, but looks like something you'd actually feel all right about driving. It's all electric, seats two and its segmented chassis allows it to lean into turns just like a motorcycle. What's more, you drive it while sitting inside a fancy, futuristic cockpit (with your passenger behind you) — who could say no to that?

Check out more of the Land Glider inside and out in our galley below, and watch a video of the concept in action after the jump.

Why does it have two doors if it only seats one?

By Bluesman at 5:26 PM ON 10/08/09

Sweet little ride, but will it hold 2 fat people?

By mrainer74 at 5:32 PM ON 10/08/09

Like it but, need some more info on it. Like how fast and how far does it go

And Malcolm, you're a moron. It says RIGHT THERE that it seats two.

Nissan's effort to make energy efficient cars are really proving worthy. The cars are not only fuel efficient but the design is great as well.

Reminds me of the Dodge Tomahawk

Not exactly a family car.

By VBGeek2000 at 12:02 AM ON 10/09/09

I still think the Carvers and the new hybrid carver look more fun...

I agree the new carver looks more cool, and is closer to production. PS, I think the film has been seeded up, the guy walking on the causeway is going a bit faster than normal - even for a Japanese.

What is up with the 'Alien face' on the front? Note the headlights and grill. Plus i got the first mintue of turns and driving. But five more minutes of turns and driving and that music.... please. A five yr old could do bettter on a PC with the new Windows 7.

By Tall Guy at 5:49 PM ON 10/09/09

It's a nice engineering exercise, but you wouldn't want to be over 5'6" tall. Another brilliant design where they save size, weight and frontal area by making the occupants smaller.

By djobitwan7 at 6:38 PM ON 10/09/09

The "Carver" in Europe is and has been in production for years. It came here and was renamed, but it is still basically the same thing. The Carver people have been perfecting this for over 15 years now.

By jimspar at 2:05 AM ON 10/10/09

The american version of the carver the "persus" has been in development for years. also, their website hasn't changed in several months. I was very excited about the vehicle, now, not so much.

Did anyone notice the license plate on the picture looks like the Apple Quicktime logo? The coolest thing about this car is the dash. I mean leaning is great, but does it actually save you anything on energy? Also, would you get seasick in the thing?

By NIck at 6:11 PM ON 10/10/09

It has 2 doors so you can get out on the car on either side, say if you park on the left hand of the street and traffic is busy you can get out of the right door to avoid traffic and get right out onto the street. It's a safety thing.

By Spaceresearcher at 11:27 PM ON 10/11/09

Nice.

I like it and it's exactly what I've been looking for. There's only one problem.

1. CONCEPT.

So many times I've seen amazing looking cars with great potential in concept cars and alas that's where they stay, simple a concept.

Way to go Nissan for getting ready for the environmentally friendly cleaner air vehicles.

To all those complaining about batteries, try to think in terms of the fact that just about every car on the road today uses a lead acid battery, so producing environmentally friendly batteries to go with electric cars is only a step away. In fact, why not use the lead acid battery for the time being. There recyclable and can be refurbished. Lithium Ion will be the ultimate solution currently however they will have to be recyclable and proven. (If charging system fails, lithium Ion batteries can be dangerous).

All that aside, it's the way to go and eventually electric vehicles will have a solar energy system to charge the batteries and the electric vehicle will become a self sustaining vehicle, requiring only standard car chasis, steering and wheel maintenance and perhaps a trade in of an old battery or 2 to a battery recycling and changing centre.

Sean.

You do get the impression that the video is wrongly compressed like it's a 16:9 played on a 4:3.... Especially when the car goes through the narrow roads at the beginning of the vid. Like those roads were made just to test the car... wonder if a ford GT would go through these...

And btw the 5 min vid is too long... got bored at around 1min30...

And yeah the BMW Clever looks better...

Cheers,

Reuben

Nice that they came up with something small and leans.

LIKE GM DID 27 YEARS AGO!
http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/22/the-original-lean-machine/

Oh, but that was gas powered. But it got in the order of 100-150 MPG.

By QuoteRadar at 6:20 PM ON 10/15/09

I love the innovative concept... but I also love being able to have my co-pilot upfront where they can chat with me and fiddle with the GPS while I focus on driving.

Maybe the future consists of changing our perceptions about the social scenario of driving, but I only want to ride in something that feels like a fighter jet cockpit if it is, in fact, a fighter jet.

Of course, as a mechanical engineer, I have to give the development team props for attempting to manage vehicle dynamics/stability and fairing integration with the tilt capabilities this thing has... I would actually love to take that for a spin and see how it handles.

By Myles at 2:29 PM ON 10/16/09

We have a similar concept right here in the USA that can't get off the ground because of federal restrictions, it's called the Tango.

Okay, so it definitely looks fun to drive, better that a Spyder trike. Perhaps the future of transportation? More lanes out of existing roadways. Powered by electric motors run off of ultra capacitors charged by electro magnetic induction from the roadways themselves? Then the range would be as far as the organice counterpart inside could go before needing to stop.

OMG Unicorn,
