Say hello to Michael. He's one of the developers on the Surfacesapes project over at Carnegie Mellon University, and he's about to walk you through just about the best use for Microsoft's Surface multitouch table in the video above.
Oh, what's said "best use," you ask? Why, recreating the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop experience, of course! It's still a work in progress, but so far they've got everything from modeled pieces (such as the Dire Wolf you'll see), spell effects (such as the massive explosion that takes out the aforementioned Dire Wolf), and tons of nice touches, from the terrain to the ambient, outdoor sound effects.
Check out the video above for more on how the Surfacescapes project is bring D&D to the world of multitouch.

I'm not a D'n'D player, but this game looks awesome. If the price of the Surface every comes down so an average person can buy one, I can see all board games going this way.

Dear lord, that is amazing! I wish these guys all the success in the world. If this project works out...wow!

Looks cool, but it would appear to take forever to play a game.

I agree with Kizer, it looks like time might be a factor. Though being a turned based game this is to be expected. I personally feel the game is more for the DM rather than the player themselves. As it gives more flexibility for the DM to create something without having to do all the calculations. Very cool!
Not to mention it will give the players a more interactive experience, which has always been lacking in the 2 dimensional world D&D normally lives in. Keep up the great work! Looking forward to playing this soon!

It would be cool if this concept was for yugioh.
