Kempler & Strauss PhoneWatch tries to convince us watch phones are cool

Watch phones are devices that seemed amazing and like what the future would be like 20 years ago, but now that we have the technology to make them a reality, turn out to be pretty underwhelming. But that won't stop companies from trying! Kempler & Strauss just launched the "smallest" touch phone watch yet, hoping it'll convince people to start wearing their phones on their wrists.

The W PhoneWatch features a touchscreen, 4GB of built-in storage and a camera for still or video recording. It looks all well and good, but you've got to wonder just why you'd want your phone on your wrist instead of in your pocket. Try it out for yourself for $199.

What's funny about this is that I stopped wearing a watch when I got a phone with digital clock display on the outside. Besides, who cares what time it really is? Someone will tell me if I'm late.

"but you've got to wonder just why you'd want your phone on your wrist instead of in your pocket"----
I'll tell you some reasons:
I may not have any pockets- and don't pretend that we don't have some clothes with no pockets.
I may be out running or in the gym.
I might be in a tight squeeze-like in a car that has nowhere to put my phone-- and the pocket would be too uncomfortable or just plain hard to get to.

...and on and on. Today's lesson, there may just be a market for a watch phone.

If I had one of these, I'd tape it to my shoe and play "Get Smart" when people called me...

Or... I could pretend I was one of the Venture Brothers and make calls on my wrist.

this is one step closer to a com-badge. I had a calculator watch when I was a kid. This is a logical next step.

When the watch gets a 3D interactive skinnable holo display and bluetooth (or an aural subdermal implant) with a terabyte of memory, call me. Otherwise....keep on plugging away at it and I'll stick with my iPhone for now.

3D interactive holo display + terabyte of memory = far beyond grasp of any pitiful iPhone.

Watch phones already come with bluetooth capability. It's funny to think that you read this snippet believing you'd have to hold your watch up to your ear and talk into a little microphone on it.

Honestly I'm surprised people aren't very interested in watch phones. The logical evolution is for the technology to allow one to control everything from a small, convenient location (hey! maybe like your wrist!!), as opposed to having to carry around yet another item (e.g. cell phone).
