Barnes and Noble\'s e-reader gets revealed

Barnes and Noble is set to reveal its new e-reader next week, aimed directly at taking on the Amazon Kindle. And Gizmodo got its hands on some leaked images of the device, which show a reader that has an e-ink screen up top with a color multi-touch screen right below.

The main screen is a 6-inch e-ink display with a resolution of 800x600, and the display beneath it is a multitouch LCD with a resolution of 480x144. This will be used for a keyboard or a secondary display showing any manner of other content. It certainly looks interesting, and more versatile than the Kindle.

The name of this thing as well as pricing and availability info should drop at B&N's event next Tuesday, so stay tuned.

Very interesting design. I'm still holding out until all of these competing companies settle on a universal ebook format, so I don't have to worry about owning a device that won't be able to view the book I want to read from a different publisher.

It'd be better if they ditched the color screen for a bigger e-ink one.

If I lived in the states I'd pounce on one of those right away (purely for the aesthetics - we'll see the firmware when it's released).
