Acer unveils world\'s first laptop with built-in 3D support

One of Acer's machines just learned a new trick in what the company is hailing as world's first 3D laptop. According to Acer, you'll be able to view 2D movies and photos as 3D content — you'll be able to do the same for games that support Direct X 9 and up. Before you get too excited: yes, you'll have to wear those damn glasses.

Acer's 3D effect is a a cocktail of "in-house software, a special screen coating, and polarized glasses," according to Tom's Hardware.

Acer calls it the "TriDef 3D Experience:"

The display has been coated with a special 3D film that clings to the panel pixel by pixel, enabling the LCD technology to deliver a 3D visual feast. Slip on the cool polarized eyeglasses that filter the images and you're ready to dive into an extraordinary 3D adventure.

…you can enjoy stunning 3D multimedia with no need for a special graphics card. A simple and intuitive interface gives you access to the world of 3D multimedia: videos, DVDs, photos and games. The software includes a set of tools designed to offer a completely seamless 3D viewing experience…

I don't care how cool your 3D goggles are, Acer. I'm sure it's a neat effect, but I'm still waiting for the world of 3D without the goofy shades.

Too cool. Always wanted to see my Windows icons floating on a background of a 3D moon. I do worry that it will make the glitches 3 times worse. On the other hand, will it make the stereo speakers sound like Dolby 6?

What if you wear glasses and don' t want to be bothered with f**king contacts? When will make 3D gear for people with glasses?

I haven't used it myself, but all the reviews say the nvidia active 3d glasses fit comfortably over corrective glasses. That said, I'm not even willing to switch from ATI cards, let alone buy a $200 pair of glasses just to see things in 3d.

There is nothing wrong with the glasses. 3D is possible without any viewing aid but the depth and viewing experience is compromized.

From my knowledge you need to have stereoscopic images before you can see 3D pop out effect with those glasses. That's like asking Microsoft to create whole new media for viewership. Don't find this necessary unless I can operate the icons like technology in minority report.

I run a 100" 3d projection system at home using wireless ED glasses and it kicks ass. Active shutter is easier to implement than polarised in many cases and cheaper too. I havent tried the new Nvidia system (their last attempt was awful)
Ive been looking for a true decent 3d desktop solution for a long long time now too - sphere showed promise but dev stopped on that in 2006 while 3dna stopped in '04
anyone got anything new to suggest?
oh EDimensional also sell a set top box that converts 2d to 3d - but I havent tried that as its only NTSC as far as I know.

TriDef == 3D + shades == nothing new

Can't wait to lay my hands on one of these.
