A look at the Alien vs. Predator game you never played

A look at the \<i\>Alien vs. Predator\<\/i\> game you never played

Edge Online has posted a trimmed version of the magazine's Alien vs. Predator retrospective. Since you probably didn't have an Atari Jaguar, which struggled to establish a user base in the short time before it was buried by the first Playstation, you probably didn't play this game. But fifteen years ago, consider this game was doing things that were even too cool for the more recent Aliens vs. Predators.

Deft design touches differentiated the [Alien and Predator] sections, such as the ability to cocoon enemies while an Alien, and to take over these new Aliens should you die - a neat way of emphasising their hive consciousness. Predators, meanwhile, acquired better weapons according to how 'honourable' their kills were. And all the while, an unremittingly tense atmosphere was maintained by the lack of a musical score.
The developer, Rebellion, went on to make another Aliens vs. Predator for the PC in 1999. They're currently at it again, developing a new AvP to be published by Sega next year. Three games with pretty much exactly the same name? That's got to be some kind of record.

This post is from our sister site, Fidgit, which is all about gaming. Head on over for more game news and reviews.

i still have the game and mu jaguar still works. even though its graphics are dated the game is still great. hoping for an updated and bigger version. as predator you can cloak and mock soldiers as alien you can head bite and tail sting and cocoon for facehuggers. as soldier the cloaked preadot whispering in stereo is creepy

I also still have a Jag, and I still love this game. Rebellion really nailed it with bright, open areas and just the thrumming of the ship's engines for sound. There's nothing more tense than walking into a deserted area with no shadows, nothing scary, but KNOWING that you're in terrible danger. I have never played a scarier game in my life, thanks to the lack of artificial suspense.

didn't this game come with the Jaguar?

One of my totally spoiled friends had one of these. He also had a Super Nintendo, Nintendo, N64, Playstation, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS3 and most likely a Wii all purchased by his mom's money.

Not that I'm jealous, but I totally am jealous...

Also, didn't the Atari Jaguar have like a half keyboard for controller and each game came with a button backer to show you which buttons did what? I loved that controller.

I actually did play this PC game on a trial version they released. It was actually pretty good but def doom rip off and actually pretty hard to beat.
