Welcome to Microsoft's revolution: Zune HD is just the beginning

Welcome to Microsoft\'s revolution: Zune HD is just the beginning

The Zune HD media player is about to hit the streets, but is it too little, too late? "With this release, you can see we're still really focused on music and video. We're still hyper-focused on that," declared Microsoft Zune's marketing manager, Brian Seitz. Notice he started out by saying "with this release," not mentioning the grand convergence down the road for Microsoft. That's what makes this Zune HD release the beginning of a revolution for Microsoft, and for computing and media.

The usually plodding and methodical Microsoft burst out of the gate with innovative features on the Zune HD, including that super-bright, sharp OLED screen, HD radio, and the best feature of all, 720p HD playback. That's where we think the revolution begins. It supports playback on multiple screens, all playing the same content at appropriate resolutions. It lets you buy or rent a movie from the Zune Marketplace, and play it on a Xbox 360, Zune HD, any HDTV with a Zune HD docked, or, eventually, your cellphone.

Enter the zPhone

And yes, it's pretty much a certainty that there will be a Zune cellphone, hinted at for months and now beyond the secret stage and well into the rumor mill. Now we're hearing a pair of such phones will be revealed in less than four months. That's when Microsoft's Project Pink will deliver the final piece to this puzzle, with a zPhone with all the goodness built into the Zune HD, with the added benefits of mobile broadband.

Let's peer ahead one year, where we'll see how the release of Zune HD represents a shift (*ahem*) in Microsoft's strategy, a convergence of media everywhere, using multiple screens for the same content. You buy (or steal) those movies, TV shows or songs once, and then you can watch them anywhere. Imagine this: You carry around a slim, tiny phone, and when you get home you plug it into a dock that charges it. Meanwhile you instantly have access to its content — movies, songs, pictures — on any PC on your network, your Xbox 360, or any TV in your house. That video you started watching on the train? You can finish watching it in your home theater in HD, even 1080p on your Xbox 360.

Welcome to the Subscription

Helping that along is the Microsoft Zune Pass, where a $15/month subscription gives you unlimited downloads of millions of music choices, plus you get to keep 10 MP3s every month — they belong to you even if you stop paying. Extend that concept to movies, TV shows and applications, where you pay once and use whatever you want. Sure, it might be more expensive than $15 a month, but you'll be able to access all of the content you can consume, wherever you go. That might be worth a lot more than 15 bucks.

Let's think about this scenario two years from now: By then, that little zPhone HD could evolve into something a lot more powerful, and its Bluetooth connectivity could let you use a desktop or portable keyboard and mouse with it. That dock feeds into your PC monitor, and you have a complete computing platform that fits in your pocket. By then, Microsoft opens its app store to third-party developers, blends in all of its own applications, and offers a complete computing platform that's no bigger than the Zune HD is today.

Theory of Everything

That concept ties into Windows Live, where you might be tempted to keep all of your applications and data, a safeguard against that awful day when you lose your tiny zPhone HD, along with all of your data. No need to worry, all is persistently backed up, because everything is in the cloud. VoilĂ ! Microsoft dominates the computing world again, turning the Zune's 1% market share into something more. A lot more. It could happen.

UPDATE: Look how Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer adds credence to some of these concepts, while denying any upcoming Microsoft-branded phones.

Microsoft is using the image of Che to pimp the Zune? That is absolutely disgusting. Whoever came up with it and whoever approved it needs to be fired.
Idiots.

By jsphillips at 7:00 PM ON 09/24/09

"The Zune HD media player is about to hit the streets"?? Last I checked, it hit the streets 9 days before this article was published.

By jay trini at 7:01 PM ON 09/24/09

I am fed up of just music and videos. Absolutely fed up. I'm pretty sure there's not much else to be excited about. Gimme more man.

By gamongrel at 7:47 PM ON 09/24/09

Actually, I bet it's DVice's folks using Che as a cute illustration for their 'revolutionary' headline...
Still disgusting.

By redshirt at 8:37 PM ON 09/24/09

Hey, Charlie White! Is the Che image a DVice image or is it a microsoft image?
If it is yours, shame on you for promoting the likes of him.
If it's Microsoft, please post the link.

By monster at 8:48 PM ON 09/24/09

I was avoiding the whole "Dvice likes Microsoft and hates Apple" debate but this article was just too much. I don't mind the speculation into the future of the product, but where the hell is the balance? There's not a single mention of possible obstacles or restrictions, i.e. the article is devoid of negativity. Come on Dvice, I thought you were better than this.

Add the article with the unsettling image of Che and a Zune... I'm just really hoping it came from Microsoft and not here.

By Czad at 9:03 PM ON 09/24/09

If Che were still alive he would kill (literally) whoever created this image. Funny though, in an ironic way.

RIP Che

By Neotyguy at 9:47 PM ON 09/24/09

I have to say, I agree with monster... Dvice loves M$ and hates Apple. They seem to always be judging everything Apple makes in a negative way, and create entire blogs about thing with Apple on things that they dislike.

And then they call this a, 'Revolutionary Machine'? Does anyone actually care about the OLED vs. LED debates? They are just as crisp as one another, and OLEDs don't last as long.

Then they say that M$ came up with the 'revolutionary' idea of syncing cellphones, media players, and computers? Come on! Home Sharing, Mobile Me, and .Mac were out for years before they even thought of implementing this.

I gave over 20 tips of different news about specific flaws or negative details towards M$... Guess what? They did not do any of them. I am getting sick of Dvice being filled with M$ fanboys, and I am thinking about switching to engadget.

Also, here is a link about one of the stories I submitted to Dvice:

http://ceoworld.biz/ceo/2009/09/22/microsoft-bribes-apple-retail-managers-and-staff/

I wouldn't be surprised if they deleted this post, they did on one of mine before.

By TH4T6UY at 10:25 PM ON 09/24/09

@Neotyguy & Monster:

So if they don't put something negative about MS in, then they're MS fanboys? Puh-lease. They're talking about prospective things that MS *could* do, not what's happening. And, also, about that article, that's been going on in business since the beginning of business, companies trying to lure other companies employees away.

Seriously, stop trolling.

By TH4T6UY at 10:28 PM ON 09/24/09

Oh, and something I forgot to add, you might also want to take a look at that article about those (stupid) MS phone things, how about in the title where it says "Say it ain't so", notice who the author of the article is...

By TearEmUp at 11:46 PM ON 09/24/09

Whoever is responsible for this does realize Che killed almost as many people as Mengela, right? Talk about bad branding....

By Anonymous at 12:18 AM ON 09/25/09

Why are they showing that Comunist murderer with the Zune phone? If that is a marketing plan then i will never buy another microsoft product.. admittedly i am more likely to believe that this is a photoshopped image that the marxist's here at syfy put up.

By monster at 12:20 AM ON 09/25/09

@TH4TGUY
Maybe it doesn't make them 'fanboys', but it sure as hell does make the article bias, which is the point. Even if you're talking about the prospective future, in fact maybe even more so, you should be taking into consideration the possible drawbacks and obstacles; it's called balance, something Dvice seems to have lacked in recent weeks.

Seriously, stop trolling. It's obviously not balanced

By TH4T6UY at 12:32 AM ON 09/25/09

So unless it's bashing Microsoft it's unbalanced? Seriously, do you even have some sort of reality filter between your thoughts and your keyboard? For Pete's sake, they're talking about a shift that's beginning to show in the bumbling, stumbling behemoth that is Microsoft and they're reporting on it. There's nothing biased about it. It would be biased if they sat there and said "MS WINS, EVERYONE ELSE CAN SUCK A BIG ONE". That's biased. Mr. White's simply talking about a move that they could (maybe) pull off to take advantage of their products. Ooh, call the frickin' neutrality police...someone had an idea involving Microsoft that didn't involve slamming it and hailing Apple!

The ONLY thing that's questionable, at ALL, in this report is the use of Che in the image.

By Deaf-Mute at 12:59 AM ON 09/25/09

Redshirt. Calm Down. I'm sure it was the authors choice to create and use that image. It matches the title really well if you haven't noticed. Don't be an idiot.

By Drone at 1:07 AM ON 09/25/09

Call me a skeptic but I am a bit underwhelmed... My only feeling is MEH.
1. sharper screen... I have a 50 inch flt panel at home so who cares. If I wanted to squint I'd read a book
2. HD radio... I don't listen to the radio, that what my MP3 collection is for.
3. 720p HD playback... whatever.

Could the article have used a bit of criticism? Yeah sure. I see a bunch of unresolved potential issues with the "zune pass". Bringing them up and weighing pros and Cons is the definition of balanced. Not sure if this qualifies Dvice as being MS fanboys but it doesn't help their case.

As for Che... well... His image on any piece of merchandise is just a utter and complete contradiction of everything he ever stood for...

By Charles Rising at 1:21 AM ON 09/25/09

Are you people serious? Dvice hates Apple, loves Microsoft? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! Every time the tiniest apple product comes out I see 10 articles about the thing. The Zune has received much less coverage than nearly ANY apple product on Dvice. Personally, I was absolutely sick of the disgusting amounts of Apple coverage any time a new apple product is announced or hits shelves. You people have to be freaking oblivious.

By redshirt at 1:28 AM ON 09/25/09

Deaf Mute, Calm down? If you aren't offended by the use of Che, then you are as much an idiot as whoever decided to use it in the first place. If the author used it I'm sure microsoft wouldn't be very happy. Do you even know what Che did?

By PlayingDevilsAdvocate at 1:56 AM ON 09/25/09

You people bashing Che Guevera are being a tad hypocritical. In case you've forgotten this country was founded by a bunch of murdering revolutionaries, not so different from Che himself.

George Washington probably killed more people than Che Guevara. They use his image on the dollar bill and THAT doesn't seem to offend anyone. So why be offended by the image of Che?

Every revolution has bloodshed. In the end our perceptions of these events are shaped more by whoever writes the history books than the actual facts.

By M$ fan boy and stockholder at 2:53 AM ON 09/25/09

@playingdevilsadvocate
che is commie. Don't disgrace the name of George washington ever again.

I don't understand why people like apple so much.

By Mihos at 7:38 AM ON 09/25/09

It's beem said, but this site is far from hating apple... after a wall of post from that Apple convention and coverage of every single carrying case/speaker dock/ and even iPhone applications, I just don't see where you can even come close to saying these things.

By Che Guevara at 10:37 AM ON 09/25/09

"Che Guevara is an inspiration for every human being who loves freedom, we will always honor his memory." --- NELSON MANDELA

* I trust his opinion over spoiled Yanqui kids who were born on 3rd base and think they hit a triple.

By Mark at 1:38 PM ON 09/25/09

To the douche's calling Che a "murderer" etc ... read a book turds ...

Jon Lee Anderson, author of the 800 + page 'Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life', who spent 5 years researching the man:

"I have yet to find a single credible source pointing to a case where Che executed an innocent. Those persons executed by Guevara or on his orders were condemned for the usual crimes punishable by death at times of war or in its aftermath: desertion, treason, or crimes such as rape, torture or murder."

Hasta la Victoria Siempre !

By PlayingDevilsAdvocate at 1:58 PM ON 09/25/09

@M$ fanboy and stockholder

I think your name pretty much says it all. Greed is what motivates true corruption... it's what Che was fighting against. You know nothing of Communism. The Soviet Union was NOT communism. China is NOT Communism. Communism has NEVER existed. Communism means rule of the working people, you know, the majority, not totalitarianism. The workers should control the profits they produce. CEOs and corporate scumbags don't make a company successful. The workers do.

Oh and George Washington DID kill a lot of people. That sir is a fact. Whether or not you're willing to accept it is another matter. I'm not saying it to demean him. He too was a hero. I'm only saying it to make a point. Bloodshed is necessary in any revolution.

Che Guevara was an inspiration. A true freedom fighter.

By Sanda at 7:47 PM ON 09/25/09

Not only did George Washington kill people he owned over 100 slaves !

Yet conservative morons dress up like him as part of their "colonial-era fetish".

Give me a Che t-shirt instead any day.

By Anonymous at 8:58 PM ON 09/25/09

I like apple, I don't like microsoft. I have my reasons. I still get annoyed at an article that is written without research, whether it is blissfully advertising a product, or criticizing it without understanding of the technologies in question. This being siad I do believe dvice has a tendancy to report way to much on apple and not enough on microsoft. Both good and bad. Most of the MS stuff I read feels like a press release, and the apple stuff seems like MS or apple fanboyz sharing their opinions but not actually critiquing with due consideration.

In any event, mostly I like dvice, but I can rarely stand their MS/Apple articles.

And I AM an apple fanboy. But real deep critique is better news than a simple endorsement any day. All around the table.

By Tikigirl at 9:51 PM ON 09/27/09

Che wasn't marxist or communist. He split with Castro over it. Viva Che!

By maltus at 4:39 PM ON 09/28/09

I'm simply amazed how many people were dumb enough not to understand the irony with this picture. Wake up, people! For the whole world Che (particularly this picture of him) is just the symbol of revolution, nothing more.

Just wanted to say to the author: hey, I'm with you, man! :)

By handoffer at 5:37 PM ON 09/30/09

m$? revolution? lol

m$ is the furthest thing from the future they r poorly organized their os windows sux and they cant even make a good mp3 player.

By CreativeGenius40 at 2:32 AM ON 10/01/09

More crap products from Microsuck. Zune was a flop. Vista was a flop. They can't even copy Apple effectively anymore. When will they just give it up.

By Armageist at 5:14 AM ON 10/01/09

Hmmm, while it may seem Microsoft is always playing catchup, the fact that you actually get automatic backup of your content, or at the very least, keeps track of what you purchased ala XBox Live, sells me instantly.

Douchapple is too good to have such things. They expect all their worshippers to bow before Steve Snobs and pay tribute once again for the very opportunity to download your pitiful content once again from the likes of ITunes. Better backup your 50-100 gb's of content somewhere, and hope and pray that backup/restore doesn't get corrupted. But then again all the artsy fartsies have plenty of money to fork over for another iMac to store on or to buy your content all over again.

But no matter, we sacraficed a kid waiting on a liver to save our LORD & SAVIOR!!

ALL HAIL STEVE SNOBS!!!!

By bluguy at 11:03 AM ON 10/01/09

Who cares about a communist terrorist ? He was a Argentine Marxist revolutionary, Do any of you know what that means ? I guess not since you defend him. I wouldn't buy the zune now if you paid me for putting his terrorist face on their advertising. OK so im not gonna sit here and give a history lesson but any American that defends his actions...isn't American cuz he hated you and the way you live.

By uhclem at 12:05 PM ON 10/01/09

I've been sold on Zune since they first came out. Currently have around 800 albums of which I've purchased maybe 20 of them. For what it would cost to put that much music on an Apple product I could buy a car instead. No thanks Apple!

By pop pop at 5:56 PM ON 10/02/09

By HandleBar at 11:39 PM ON 10/02/09

"I'm switching to engadget "

You mean you only read one gadget blog ? LOL I tend to read Engadget,Dvice and Gizmodo.
I bet you're into team sports you seem to have a typical "fan" reaction and feel you have to support a team.
Do you only read one magazine and support it to the end too ? You really are funny.

By Michelle at 7:59 PM ON 10/03/09

Che is hot,
Che haters are usually not.

Therein lies the problem :o)

By SevenV6.1 at 10:52 PM ON 10/22/09

I'm 1) amazed at how many commenting took the tangential bait of Che. 2) An owner of a ZuneHD, which I'm sure many others are just making assumptions, and 3) happy when any company runs into competition which makes products cheaper and more purchase worthy for the consumer. I love my Zune, and my Zune Pass, am able to playback HD on my HD TV and then carry the media onto an airplane to watch (something Drone leaves out in his/her assessment), and am personally not at all impressed with iTunes which resembles more of and Excel for Media than a media player. I enjoy carrying around not just my selection of media, but an entire ZunePass catalog of media with me. Oh, and I don't have to make any purchase to hear the entire song, just a subscription price which gives me 10 free songs a month. Zune + ZunePass just wins. Apple's method may be now, but definitely not future.
