PlayStation4 design is probably way too cool to be real

PlayStation4 design is probably way too cool to be real

Sony's new, cheaper PS3 Slim means that the PS4 is probably a ways off yet, but that doesn't mean designers aren't thinking about cool designs for PlayStations of the future.

This one is called PlayStation4 Clear, and comes from Australia based designer Tai Chiem. His ultra sleek rendition mounts a round disc drive on a clear touch screen which shows an index of the disc's contents. This, of course, works on the assumption that future PlayStations will continue to use disc based media, something I wouldn't count on with the continuing move towards online gaming and solid state media.

That is incredibly sexy. Fragile, though...

By monster at 1:09 PM ON 09/19/09

Wow it must be a pretty god damn slow news day, this is weeks old already.
Either that or the Dvice researchers really are that bad...

By crazyirish7 at 3:33 PM ON 09/19/09

why is everyone always bashing this site? there is so much stuff on here, and it's always extremely interesting! I think you hardcore nerds need to lighten up.

By HD at 3:56 PM ON 09/19/09

@monster,

just because you saw it before doesn't mean everybody else did. So stop bashing the site and have respect for the people that come here to see the news.

By Traveler at 5:16 PM ON 09/19/09

With the advent of games on could systems, will there even be a next generation of game systems?

By Dantgf at 5:41 PM ON 09/19/09

Solid state media? Hmmm sounds a lot like cartridges, like the N64 had....didn't sony rubbish the idea of cartidges when they launched the original Playstation, despite the fact that cart have little to no load time compared to discs.
Everythiung old is new again

By DantgfFAILS at 5:57 PM ON 09/19/09

SSM = SSD = just download the s--t

there would be no tray/slot of any kind

By monster at 7:22 PM ON 09/19/09

Uh correct me if I'm wrong, most tech sites pride themselves on being up to date. This news is at least 2 weeks old, my point is it should have been on a long time ago, and the only reason I can see for it coming out now is a lack of other stuff to post today or someone messed up and missed it.

@HD
Care to elaborate on how my comment was disrespectful to readers?

By Neotyguy at 7:31 PM ON 09/19/09

The only reason why I bash DVice sometimes is because of the amount of biased opinions from the authors when it comes to Microsoft and Apple tech. They always seem to be trying to bash Apple.

By TH4T6UY at 8:33 PM ON 09/19/09

Am I the only one who looks at that and thinks that there's no way we'll ever, ever have processors/GPUs that will be able to play games more advanced than today's games in such a small area? I mean, that design would work for a CD player maybe, but not for a machine that would have any serious computing power. Just not realistic, cool design, but horribly unrealistic.

Oh, and the more down-to-Earth views on Apple products are one of the reasons why I like DVICE. They don't kiss Steve Job's ass every chance they get like many other sites do.

By randyrittenhouse at 9:03 PM ON 09/19/09

i wanna know where monster goes to get his news.... i might go there... cuz yeah i want to know the news when it happens

By Neotyguy at 10:07 PM ON 09/19/09

Down-to-Earth? Yea right, they bash Apple any chance they could get. Even if Apple created a machine that had the power of a super-computer with an affordable price, they would still only look at the bad things. They even made an entire post on what got worst on the iPod, but barely mentions the good updated things.

By TH4T6UY at 10:56 PM ON 09/19/09

I said "more down-to-Earth". More being the operative term. And, whenever a company downgrades a product it should be big news. You don't buy something for hundreds of dollars when its previous iterations have better features than the current generation. And LOL at the thought of an Apple product being affordable.

By Neotyguy at 11:45 PM ON 09/19/09

Great, here we go with another M$ fanboy...

6 hours less of audio isn't a big deal. It doesn't effect video or apps, so that is my point. They make an entire post against the smallest thing that they think is wrong with Apple, but when something is wrong with an M$ product?

By TH4T6UY at 12:21 AM ON 09/20/09

That's because everyone knows when something's wrong with a Microsoft product. I mean, with the Xbox - RROD, with Windows, well, there's not so much a problem with Windows as there is a problem with users and computer literacy, which as an IT guy, you see a lot, though I'll still go ahead and count that as a problem, and the Zune...well, that's all that needs to be said about that :P. And, no, I'm not a Microsoft fanboy. Only reason I even run Windows is because I do a lot of gaming. I'd be running Ubuntu right now if it weren't for DirectX being THE gaming API. I am, however, a fan of the truth.

By Bob at 2:11 AM ON 09/20/09

Slick look. To the guy saying we'll never be able to fit the processing power into that space, you're probably right w/ integrated circuits, unless we come up w/ some super duper cooling tech to cram it all in (mebbe the whole inside of the component part is ice w/ a layer of icy water running over the cases for the components? Lol). However we're getting to the point where we should be moving on past integrated circuits. Some companies have ideas for getting a bit more out of them but, honestly, they're played out and we've hit the wall. Notice how processors haven't really been getting faster?

Honestly I hope that consoles are dead before the next gen. They've flat out ruined gaming - made it more expensive, made you PAY just to play online (w/ no extra features, just a bunch of crap they're trying to sell you and a lot more lag), removed ALL the freedom of traditional online gaming (mods, maps, etc, they make you pay for everything that used to be free). Really, consoles deserve to die and die painfully. I'm hoping some cloud gaming thing similar to what OnLive promises will come to fruition before then, or preferably right before they release the consoles so that sony and M$ can lose tons of money on consoles noone buys. Those guys really deserve it, gaming was so great before their crappy consoles got online.

By Czad at 2:11 AM ON 09/20/09

Come on guys can't we all get along?

I am so sick of these kinds of "debates." The Microsoft gamer losers and the Apple snobs crying and slinging snot whenever their brand is criticized. You people fight about a computer... a machine. You know, hardware and software... nothing more. I have a Mac, AND a PC. As well as a virtual machine running Ubuntu. It's called the best of both worlds fellas.

As far as the corporations themselves, both suck... and for all the same reasons. They care about $$$ not the users.

By Bob at 2:19 AM ON 09/20/09

Oh, and the worst part of it all is games for windows live. It's like they weren't happy w/ just ruining gaming on consoles, they decided to bring their brand of horrid restriction and option-free gaming to the PC. It used to be if you wanted a good gaming experience and had the cash you could get it on PC, now it seems like every high profile game is a game for windows live... how did that happen? As far as I understand that's pretty much like XBL (read: Crap) and it means no modding community or any of the good stuff for those games either.

Why couldn't they have been happy with destroying multiplayer gaming on consoles? Why did they have to bring their sacrilege to the computer as well? I mean, that's really just the final insult, when they infect the PC with their horrid restrictions... I really wish all of these people would die of some horrible painful wasting disease so that gaming could go back to what it once was. I've got a feeling that Games for Windows Live is gonna be the future of all PC games as well, though, which means no more modding community, nothing but shoddy games and shoddy pay-to-play "added content."

I really, really hope some cloud-gaming service bankrupts all of these evil folks. And then they commit suicide and go to roast in hell for eternity where they belong.

By monster at 8:05 AM ON 09/20/09

@randyrittenhouse
I digress, there's no one site that'll keep you up to date (that I know of), and Dvice is usually one of the better sites for being up to date; which is why this stood out so much for me.
Geekologie.com is where I saw this a few weeks ago before here, which imo just added insult to injury for Dvice.

By Neotyguy at 10:30 AM ON 09/20/09

Well said Bob.

The only console that doesn't make you pay for online service is the Wii... And it can hold what... 4? 8 players? And the graphics are crap.

Let's just hope that Google can come in and kick Sony and M$ where they deserve. I can't wait for cloud computing to start kicking in.

@TH4T6UY

Again, you are giving Windows way too much credit. Computer literacy still can't prevent a game from crashing right in the middle, and for some reason, M$ can't fix the crashes. I have rarely had a crash or error on OSX, and after the jump from Tiger, I NEVER had one.

Also, if you want to run games under Ubuntu, try Crossover. It let's you run all steam games and few non-steam games.

By doughboy at 11:25 AM ON 09/20/09

so spending $50 a year on a $300 system is more expensive than buying a new part for your computer every time (or every other time) you buy a new game? or getting a $1500+ alienware computer to assure youll be able to play the games that come out for the next 6 months then its time to upgrade again or risk slowdowns, crashes or just a completely unplayable game.

I bought my 360 3 years ago and it will play every game i load into it. ive maybe spent $600 total in that time, including the system, three years of online and some map and other game stuff from XBLA(not including store buying games, something PC gamers have to do also).

how much have you spent on your computer in that time?

By fenix at 11:28 AM ON 09/20/09

well to go back on the PS4 toppic and to reply to those talking about procesor power and space, i was just watchign a really neat program on discovery which was then made in an article on Focus magazine ( i believe) that talk about new kind of microchips that ARE succesfully in developpement stages NOW that are made by quicly growing sinthetic diamonds in a mater of days ( not month liek the gem quality ones) this basically would allow a processor to be 100 smaller and 100 faster as carbon is 1000 times more conductive and resistant to heat than silicon ..but inly in the crystalien form of diamonds are these quality viable for computing .....immagine a standard flip-cellphone with the comp ability of a 360 or a ps3 ...or maybe more...its actually not that far in the future ......cost ..well that is a differant story all together

By TH4T6UY at 1:09 PM ON 09/20/09

@Neotyguy

It's not up to Microsoft to ensure that the developers of a game code the game properly. If a game were continually crashing on an Xbox, yes, that'd be Microsoft's fault, but with Windows all they're obligated to provide is a stable platform. It's up to the developers to ensure that their software works. It's third party software, not Microsoft's problem.

By thisisonlyatest at 4:34 PM ON 09/20/09

@monster and others who've seen this before

Dude... this is old news. It was old news when I saw it a few weeks ago. On the other hand, this site gets updated enough that this probably fell through the cracks or got files under R (for retarded).

For starters, if the PS4 actually looks like this, some dork who came up with this design is probably gonna sue Sony (and lose).

Since this was designed by some moron with too much time on his hands (or some graphic design student who is obsessed with Sony), then this will probably be the last time anyone will ever see this design.

Seriously, though... this looks like a piece of crap which would break if looked at the wrong way.

By biscuit at 5:18 PM ON 09/20/09

@monster, i think its cute how we've become so f'ing pathetic that we have to bitch about how long it takes for us to receive our RUMORS about consoles that DO NOT and WILL NOT exist on the market place. Have you seen DVICE before?

By Neotyguy at 5:45 PM ON 09/20/09

@TH4T6UY

If you've ever programed with DX, then you would know what I am talking about. It's not the 3rd parties fault that Windows has a huge registry and uses dll. But you should really try that Crossover application if you use Ubuntu, it allows you to play most Windows games on Linux (or Mac).

@thisisonlyatest

Your right, the more design concepts that people put out there, the more limiting Sony will have it.

By TH4T6UY at 8:18 PM ON 09/20/09

I'd give it a try, but I can't be bothered to reformat my system or clear space while the semester's still going. My school gets a VMWare license for all the IT students and on my main machine I usually run a couple of different OSes for classes (Server '08, Vista Bus., Red Hat, Win. 7 and Ubuntu). But should I make the switch on a standalone machine I'll pick it up ;).

And I still maintain that it's the third party's fault if something doesn't work. If a company builds a s--tty PS3 game, it's not the PS3's fault. The company didn't spend enough time looking at the architecture to make it right. And, no, I'm not a Sony fanboy either, I don't even own a PS3 :P

By Sebastian at 8:27 PM ON 09/20/09

Apart from the obvious concept that this is, the PS4 would never turn out like that. Why? Because there's no way in hell Sony would ever change the design of their friggin' controller!

By Neotyguy at 9:39 PM ON 09/20/09

Yea, the PS controller is old, they should have went with the boomerang design originally planned...

By vga-kabel at 3:42 AM ON 09/21/09

Hi,
First of all.thanks for this article.The design is so attractive and stylish that every gamer will try to buy it.I have never seen such cool and stylish gadget before.

By some-guy-with-a-pc at 4:58 AM ON 09/22/09

i dont know about you guys, but every game i pop into my pc works. i live in lebanon and here black markets are every where, i got this pc with optimum performance(win. xp sp2)( almost as gd as alien ware's and its made in the u.s not Korean or chinese products ) and ALL da latest games work amazingly. except when i set the resolution to 1600x1200 thats when some barely slow down(you CANT find original games in lebanon, all games cost the same : 1 $ :P)

By Anonymous at 5:24 AM ON 09/22/09

Yes i believe that Some-Guy-With-a-pc is TRUE i also live in Lebanon and every game is only around 1$ and ive seen the same pc he's got ...and Ps4 rocks ! :P only from the outside look ...

By ehutch at 7:56 PM ON 09/22/09

PS3 HAS FREE ONLINE PLAY PEOPLE. IT IS A BETTER CONSOLE THAN PEOPLE GIVE IT CREDIT FOR. TIME WILL PROVE ME CORRECT.

By Dashel at 10:42 AM ON 09/23/09

So, which game currently running was a fan developed spin off from a game of modest success?

Guys- the problems on both sides of the 3rd party development process between M$ and 3rd party developers are well documented, stop acting like a bunch of politicians.

Guys-Assle vs M$: Great, two companies, one philosophy, "We control everything" Its like trying to pick between two different evils.

Most computer users pretty much have the same credo, "Why must everything be so hard?" For them, packaged, simplified, and easy anything is perfect. For the rest, and minority, work and creativity are the way to go.

As for the design, that thing looks a: fragile, b: heavy, c: too friggin' large. d: overpriced e: impossible to find ways to manufacture cheaply. And when it comes to consoles, the less money you spend on exterior parts, the more cool ones the interior gets, aka OS, chips, others.

BTW, why hasn't anyone slapped a keyboard onto a PS3 or 360, preloaded it with the last remaining basics of computing like Word Processors, packaged it and sold it to the many idiots out there who can't figure a computer out and kept them out of our hair?

By kahn_iceay at 7:16 AM ON 09/24/09

I really have to say... that is the ugliest looking design I have ever seen. I get the concept of Simplicity, but that just looks like its intended to break the moment your warranty runs out.

By ravi at 10:33 AM ON 09/24/09

this looks so unreal!!!

By Marvelous M at 12:49 PM ON 09/24/09

ok, I only read the first 5 comments, but I just wanted to say, that I too am a little annoyed at all the people who constantly come on this site just to post that their news is old. Who cares? It's all new to me, guess I'm just not a die hard tech news reader as all y'all are

By futurebogey at 1:34 PM ON 09/24/09

Wake me when the PS-12 comes with virtual reality and customized theme music...

By Ward55 at 4:21 PM ON 09/24/09

It looks kick ass. it would be sweet if that were the design.

By WetbiscuitMcGee at 1:47 AM ON 09/26/09

@ futurebogey

To promote the PS2, Sony ran those "PLAYSTATION 9" commercials. I was only a teenager then, but remember them fondly. Polygon Man, on the other hand... not so much.

Here's the YouTube link.:

Hey guys and Gals , you know if its such an Evil world out there controlled by the $nowneys and the Micro$hafts and all those consoles and well the point is, Get of your FAT AS* and Build a better one , write a better game, start A BETTER gaming COMMUNITY.. ANYONE REMBER THE DAYS OF "Mud's and Moo’s or Realms” those bulletin board based gamming environments , Telenet and the hoola Hoop ok 'nough said !

By ALPHARapToR at 2:26 AM ON 10/09/09

Still waiting for the PS9, so all I need do is inhale and never need to have 'gamers thumb' again. Though it might be banned for its role increasing in obesity in the US_of_A. I mean WoW(World of Warcraft) is like an addiction, when your game system is literally a part of you, why bother...
