MIT's eyeball chip could restore sight within three years

MIT\'s eyeball chip could restore sight within three years

Some researchers at MIT are currently hard at work on a microchip that will attach to the outside of an eye to restore sight, and they're looking to use it on humans within three years. Whoa.

The titanium-encased chip is designed to withstand staying in the human body for 10 years, and it's powered wirelessly via a pair of glasses with a power source inside. It won't bring blind people's vision up to 20:20, but it should allow them to make their way around and recognize faces, which is certainly a big step forward for the visually impaired.

This is awesome!
I hope this works well...first for the blind and then for my bionic eyes (x-ray & nightvision please).

It just looks like it would hurt though.
I know an eyelash in my eye feels like a brick is rubbing up against it.

Cool, now make something so you can take a pill and perfect vision - no glasses, contacts or Lasik surgery!
I'm waiting...

Wonder if Obamacare will pay for it? Yah right.......

Awsome!

well done MIT.

It would suck to be blind, hopefully in a decade nobody will be.

why not just use Stem cell and gemne techoligy to grow a new human eye to replace the failing blind eye

By lea at 8:42 PM ON 09/24/09

sorry typo erroer ment to say Gene not gemne

Yes, well done MIT, a truly rewarding and useful and most of all GOOD endeavor.

By Giggity at 11:46 AM ON 09/26/09

@lea...well, even if Stemcell technology works, there is still the uproar that some people have about using it.
At least this is an alternative that no one is whining about....yet

I want to know how it works. Does it replace the retina? Augment the signal to the optic nerve? There are many different causes for blindness; it'll be good to be able to cure one of them, but which one? And how far out are we for the others?

By Mahes23 at 9:01 AM ON 10/01/09

Cool...I hope this works...now...if they could just develop a pill that gets rid of hemmorhoids instead of having to use a rusty exacto knife and a cheap bottle of vodka...

The Tleilaxu already have a patent on Ghola eyes.

By stevefah at 9:29 AM ON 10/01/09

@blsmith71: do you have any idea how many years you have to train to be a Tleilaxu Face Dancer? Blind people can't invest that much time. And gholas aren't such great independent thinkers anyhow.
Go, MIT!

Due to The Patriot Act anything seen will be downloaded and reviewed for security purposes. Hope that they also have some kind of anti-virus program installed because if they catch a computer virus the person is right back where they started.

I hope this comes up soon. My father went blind after a heart attack 3 years ago, and it would be nice for him to see his grand children for the first time.

By Eko at 9:59 PM ON 10/04/09

All I have to say is that this would be incredible. My brother lost his eyesight six years ago, at the age of 13. How wonderful it would be if he could see again.

By witnessmiracles at 2:07 AM ON 10/07/09

i hope this will launch and will work for humans! thank you to all the creators for coming up with something as amazing as this. my brother was in an accident a year ago and had had blood clot the size of 2 grown mans fists removed from his brain.now he is now 100% blind in his left eye and 50% in his right! something like this can change his life!! i fully support any and all new developments!!
