Courier, Microsoft's secret tablet — sorry, booklet — unearthed

Courier, Microsoft\'s secret tablet — sorry, booklet — unearthed

For the past few months there's been heavy speculation that Apple's next mega-launch will be a tablet. So far, so vaporware. But now it seems that Microsoft has stolen a march on the Cupertino clan with Courier, a two-screen booklet that is breathtakingly beautiful. You can flick, write and draw on the multi-touch screens using your fingers as well as a stylus. There's a camera embedded in the back cover, and there's a home button located in the space between both screens.

As for a date when mere mortals like us can get our paws on the Courier, well, that's for the super-secretive Microsoft execs to decide on. The assumption is that the user experience is still being developed and shown to outside agencies. For the moment you'll have to satisfy yourselves by watching the video, as well as the gallery below.

Now that is something that I would buy. Make one of the screens a Kendle type screen and the other a LCD with LED's that would "sleep" while you read the other screen thereby extending battery life and I'm yours.

What a dumbass blog. Type the wrong friggin CODE WORD and it blanks your comment.

You are a bunch of dicks.

I predict:

Not enough memory
S-L-O-W
Limited connectivity
Mere ‘gadget” usefulness

Dear Sam Shatmedrawers. You are a charming individual. Please tell me you are one of identical octuplets, as it would make me so happy to know that there are more than one of you making this world such a joyous place.
All the best,
Addy

Will it have WIFI, USB & bluetooth ?
Will it be able to rotate the screens, and perhaps offer an on screen keyboard ?
What speed will it be / Chip ?
If its not as fast in real life as the video I just watched, why bother ?
Creative interface must work as fast as I can.
Also, screen should resist fingerprints- I have had tablets that become greasy streaked screens after only a few minutes of use.
Get all this addressed and, depending on options, I'd pay $300-$600 for a unit.

@Atwoody You forgot to predict "Apple comes out with the same thing at a higher price and less functionality and is declared 'BRILLIANT!'"

Actually, I kinda like this thing. Looks like a good bedside and air-plane solution. Practical is not on my requirement list for my gadgets though.

By Giggity at 9:43 AM ON 09/23/09

@Sam... just hitting back usually shows the page again with all the comments still there.
Not sure why your's vanished.

@Olden...although I am sure the first gen will have limits, I seriously doubt that MS will put out something so limited...ex, check out the new Zune as an example (very functional, if not yet perfect).

As my own comment, why does this have a camera? Its kind of an odd placement too.
If it was a separate flexible attachment though, that may make it a little more useful.

Other than that, I am sure they will address the issues that Rick points out too. This is still just in design/dev phase and those are typically common issues now for most pc-type electronics.

This thing looks sleek and I have some high hopes for it. I cant wait to get rid of all the paper on my desk and just use something like this.

By Marvelous M at 9:44 AM ON 09/23/09

@Mihos

practical is not a requirement for your gadgets? I wish I lived in whatever world you lived where I could afford to buy things that didn't have practicality.

As for me, if it doesn't have an actual practical use, I can't justify spending money on it, not because I don't want to, I just can't afford it.

Most of us need practicality

First Impression: Did Nintendo decide to enter the PC business?
Hey, a return to good penmanship and the reduction in usage of the typing keyboard?
How heavy? Paper Notebook heavy? Notebook Computer heavy?
Memory, Processor, Interface, details, more details!
Optimization: Unlike laptops can we have some build our own capabilities here?

By Stone at 10:16 AM ON 09/23/09

@ giggity

When it mentioned the camera, I thought of people using it in field work (adjuster, engineers, etc.). It would be nice to be able to create a report and embed pics at the same time. Even if the pics are preliminary (take the rest with a "good" camera), it's nice for instant proposals sent out from location.

By Giggity at 1:38 PM ON 09/23/09

@Stone...yes, I agree, thats why I was asking why it is on the back of the folder.
How good of a shot can you really take holding a folder up?
I suggested a separate camera with a flexible arm. Then you can use it when the folder is on a desk or lock it back in place for other shots.

By Brass Orchid at 4:08 PM ON 09/23/09

Why the odd placement for the camera? Maybe you are given the opportunity to cut and paste from live shots. Focus and center - touch to capture - crop to size - expand or reduce. Sounds Useful.

By Giggity at 4:58 PM ON 09/23/09

@Brass.. true, but it is a folder, so you either have it closed when holding it up to take a pic or you have it open and are using 2 hands to hold it.

Plus, my point was not that it was bad having the camera on it..just that maybe it could be a little more useful if it was on a flexible arm or snap-lock.
Also, as I pointed out, the camera isnt very useful when you have the folder on a desk or table. If it was flexible or detach-able, you could then use it WHILE you were doing work with the folder open.

By Mihos at 6:14 PM ON 09/23/09

@Marvelous My comment was more of a disclamer meaning that although this device is something I would definatly be interested, it by no means it is a good buy for everyone else or that I would suggest it... I think we are saying the same thing. I would agree it is probably not for most people, but saying it shouldn't exist is something I would argue all day long.

By anq at 12:30 AM ON 09/25/09

everyone complaining about the cam on the outside.

if you watched the vid attached it shows her using the cam with the tablet open

so its either small enough to hold in 1 hand or you got to use both

By Drone at 1:31 AM ON 09/25/09

Visually really appealing, although I'm not sure when or what i would use it for... If it had a color e-ink screen it might have some great applications. My concern is that I am a much faster and proficient typist than I am a writer. Memories of an old palm pilot keep flaring to mind and the utter disconnect between what i wrote and what it thought i meant... also Does it have a lefty mode?

By toptom at 1:18 PM ON 09/25/09

Could be a very nice replacement for text books. Each student gets one and downloads text for all classes instead of having a backpack with 4-7 books to take home every night. Home work could be distributed and turned in via wifi. Immediate access to internet for research. Styles to keep up with penmanship. And would get them prepared for the coming work environment where it will be imposable to get a job without extensive tech experience.

By Al at 9:03 PM ON 09/29/09

Man, If I didn't plan on waiting to see what Apple is bringing out soon, I'd be waiting to buy this just for the cool look of it.

Throw away your Kindle. This would make all eReaders pointless.
