French company Optinvent has teamed up with a Japanese manufacturer to introduce a more affordable brand of HMD (head mounted display) called the Clear Vu. The group cites cheaper lens materials as a major factor in their ability to offer a more affordable solution to consumers.
Once the device is available for commercial purchase it is expected to be used for everything from portable movie viewing, gaming, and augmented reality visualizations native to the iPhone. The Clear Vu is scheduled to hit the market at somewhere under $200 during the second half of 2010.

I guess it doesn't matter how ridiculous you would look in these. Because if you are wearing them you probably have no friends anyway.

One of the guys I work with got a HMD. It was heavier then it appeared and watching anything in it gave me a headache. True that was a few years ago so maybe they have improved but honestly I can't ever see these as anything more then a nitche market.

I wouldn't want to be the idiot walking about in those things. I'm all for portable movie viewing, etc but this is taking it a little too far. Where are we supposed to watch these movies or play games? I could see this coming in handy during long flights but that's about it. http://ziggytek.com/

The original article does not even mention the iphone and what the hell is " reality visualizations native to the iPhone"? I know you guys hold you iphone in unnaturall loving embraces, but seriously.

This is a good step in the right direction. If you don't understand 'reality vizualizations native to the iPhone' i suggest you go youtube ARToolkit and similar programs. This is without a doubt the future of entertainment, education and Information Technologies. The iPhone and similar GPS and compass enabled touch devices are the first step in this revolution. Affordable HMD's like this are the second. The programs are the next. With apple releasing an AR capable update for their O.S. this month and easter eggs like Yelp's monocle, it's really easy to see where this is going. I'll take two!

Completely agree with ARevolution. HD transmissive displays will revolutionize the way we think about augmented reality. AllVideoGlasses.com will review the Clear VU's as soon as they come out.
