The Frankfurt Motor Show will play host to the latest round of concept car teasers this season and the latest stunner is the Volkswagen L1. Somehow this amazing concept vehicle simultaneously screams muscle car "and" protective family car cocoon.
Shaped like a bullet, and shown off in what appears to be gun-metal silver, the L1's body is composed of lightweight carbon fiber and aluminum which allows it to achieve an amazing 189 miles per gallon. Outfitted with a diesel-electric hybrid engine, and capable of a top speed of 99 miles per hour, the company hopes to get the car into the hands of the public within three years.

Yeah, because color and shape are the most important things on cars :D
God forbid you should get a flat on one of those rear tires.

Hey maybe they are airless tires! It's still suck to have to get them replaced for the tread though.

Pretty Useless, what is that a one seater? The toyota prius and the new Chevy volt carry 5 passengers and get similar MPG.
VW dropped the ball on this one.
It looks like a glorified solar powered bike.

Family car? if you're a family of one perhaps, and muscle car? What does the rumble of its v8 sound like i wonder?

V Wub and their concept vehicles. They can keep it. They did the same thing with the GX3 and then decided it would be too risky for them to build. Someone could have an accident and V Wub would get sued. Why waste money building a concept that will never see a showroom floor..

Niko, the Volt and the Prius only get 55 mpg on a good day. The jump from 55 to 190 is not what I'd call "similar."

Not a one seater, but a tandem two-seater... kinda like an F-14.
This is a predominantly "commuter" car, where 80% of all trips to/from work/home have one person in the vehicle during that trip.
This will be a niche car, because of the change of seating, similar to the old Honda Insight, which did not sell well, but got incredible gas mileage for it's day.
:)

This TWO seater from VW is in all probability the future. It makes perfect sense and besides the Smart is a two seater and gets lousy gas mileage...and it is truly ugly.
