Tiny bicycle-towed house is self-sufficient

Tiny bicycle-towed house is self-sufficient

Why tow around a bus-sized motorhome when you can create a 100-pound trailer that has nearly everything you need? Meet a guy named Paul, creator of this bicycle-towed camper with a wind turbine on top, a place he called home at the Burning Man project for a week.

He cooks his meals in a solar oven, and heats up water for showers and kitchen use with a solar water heating system. There's a urinal funnel on the outside, but unfortunately there's no facilities for taking care of number two. Guess he just had to squat for that. Overall, this is as off-the-grid as you can get.

Paul built this micro house as a design study, wondering what would happen if Swine Flu resulted in an apocalypse that required him to be entirely self-sufficient. Check out the gallery below to peruse his Spartan accommodations, and don't miss our favorite feature, the bubble on the end where he lays his head at night, giving him a clear view of the stars.

likes it. Nifty swifty. As for "number two," camping toilets are available from Sears, etc that could easily be stored onto one of his shelves. Very clever.

Just looking at that thing gives me a raging fit of claustrophobia.

By headkick at 12:47 PM ON 08/26/09

I assume the cat litter takes care of the other facility problem.

By si1versmith at 2:15 PM ON 08/26/09

It's an interesting project, but I'd say I prefer to pull a much smaller trailer with my tent and sleeping bag on it, personally...

By CoralAmber at 3:53 PM ON 08/26/09

I find it funny that he thought Swine Flu could lead to a post-apocalyptic future.

By scabbard at 6:58 PM ON 08/26/09

Arr, just so ye know, I will be cutting off any bankers heads if they be showin' up at BM

By charlesrising at 9:32 PM ON 08/26/09

never said he thought swine flue could lead to a post-apocalyptic future, they said "if", entirely theoretical.

By GermanCrazyGoat at 11:41 PM ON 08/26/09

Dude i know where this picture is! Its at an event called Burning Man where u get to go wild and b creative with art. And this guys perception of art is appearently really creative cuz i woulda never thought of miniaturizing mobile omes. But hay, thats what burners do...

By Beren at 10:11 AM ON 08/27/09

This is an extremely clever design. What it shows perhaps more than anything else, though, is how little energy most of us actually need for many day-to-day tasks, which points up how much energy most of us actually waste just for simple things like cooking and lighting. That's probably the most environmentally-impacting message of a project like this.

By ShawnieMichael at 12:49 PM ON 08/27/09

I like it. Although I do not like the leg thing, since it's exposed to outside. It would be ideal to use the accordion flute style, so to expand and closes at will. Keeps out bugs, and keeps the animals from nipping at you. Good bones, can be improved upon. I like!

By Doc_97 at 6:14 PM ON 08/27/09

Interesting idea, one question though, why is it curved on one side? There are obviously no aerodynamic or structural benefits and it's actually a waste of potential space. Only possible reason I could see is if they guy owns a small aircraft and he hauls this thing around in it. Anyone else care to take a guess? *scratches head*

By Laos at 8:49 PM ON 08/27/09

Probably for making it lighter

Though i find this to be a GARBAGE "micro" home

1. There is a funnel on the outside, if for water, it's WAY too low and small, whereas a larger funnel or mesh bag on top with a "Debris" filter of mesh on top to keep out the bugs in the water. Also its so low someone can pee into it while he sleeps

2. The fact he has his head exposed there means if someone hits his vehicle, he's a goner. To add it will throw in UV radiation while he naps and he'll get a bad sunburn or cook himself

3. The thing is cramped, and as said before is curved which sucks away space. It'd be very effective it was rectangular with a slanted roof (To keep snow from toppling it over

4. Light also means light materials. The only insulation he has is the mattress, and MAYBE 1 sheet, which means he wont stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

5. Theres no way to store propane on it. Following the three energy source rule, this only has one (Solar). If it gets LP, it at least has two.

How would this work for dating ?

"We don't have to go back to my place, I've already brought it."

Too, bad it's not a bicyclehome built for two.
Sorry, Daisy.

By hmmm at 3:21 AM ON 09/01/09

To Laos, the funnel IS for peeing, an intentional design.

By karbonphyber at 1:50 AM ON 09/02/09

Doc_97 : maybe to prevent water from gathering at the "roof" ?

By turtleman at 7:30 PM ON 09/03/09

Ok you guys. Here's a link to my blog that this semi accurate article came from. If you're bored it will explain all the crazy details. Theres also more crazy stuff I've made that you can muse over...and thanks for your comments. You're right too. I would die if someone hit me with a truck, but I didn't get a sunburn on my face because I sleep at night. Also the curved roof was to shield from 50+ mph winds that happen everytime at burningman. I even still had to tie it down!

Great for my dogs when going for a ride on a hot day in Florida, or for homeless people.

See a cute little 400 pound trailer towable by almost any car and can be customized for motorcycles!!!

Just me, or this dude has some similarities to MacGyver?

By natefrogg at 1:39 PM ON 09/07/09

i think it's awesome! +1 for ingenuity man, that's a trip that you still had to tie it down, looks like it'd be heavy enough with it's own weight for 50~60 mph winds

By Joe at 4:48 PM ON 09/07/09

This also good for homeless people too. Great idea!

to BRYAN: almost everything has been done before, and most new things are just improvements, he wasn't claiming to be entirely original anyways.

Good job to Paul to doing what he wants and building it, naysayers can continue to live in their 3 energy source whatever.

By Zeuszgrl at 6:44 PM ON 09/11/09

That's ingenious, and great for a Lone Wolf but what about someone who actually has a partner ?
The only way the Swine Flu could lead to an "apocalypse" (please!) is if enough people were gullible enough to take the contaminated mad-science lab engineered Sine flu SHOT ! The experimental vaccine is what will sicken people, see 1976's results for reference.

By turtleman at 10:05 PM ON 09/11/09

Amazing how my little camper has taken off on the web lately. It's been written about In Chile, London and South Africa and so on. Hey, It's just a burningman toy! Yes It did hatch from a theme: How small can I make a compartment that houses everything one needs, off grid, just in case the sh#t hits the fan, and, be able to withstand the nasty weather on the Playa. This was not intended for touring. Too heavy, wide and not aerodynamic enough. But, I've lived in it for 2 weeks and it works. It is a possible starting point for housing a functional single homeless city dweller. The pee funnel would be inside, make it narrower and able to push around.
Thanks for all of your kind comments. I create these contraptions to make people think out of the box, and that's what I think we'll need in order to survive in the future.

So...is there room for the girlfriend? That thing looks lonely.
