Sony's been working on new and improved batteries, ones that use olivine-type lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material. They say that these fancy new batteries offer up four times the life of current lithium ion batteries and charge up in a mere 30 minutes.
Sounds awesome! Unfortunately, the new batteries are only available in power tools at the moment, but they'll phase over to consumer electronics "gradually." Well, something to look forward to I suppose.

The lithium iron phosphate chemistry used in these batteries is one of the most stable available - that is one reason Sony is like to have chosen it over the previous lithium cobalt chemistry, which is the one that caused the problems.
It is a bit sluggish, and they had to find the right additives to goose it up a bit, but now that they've done that they have a chemistry which is a lot better.
The battery will last ages, won't catch fire and doesn't use environmentally unfriendly cobalt.
Kudos Sony!
