Sony unveils smaller, cheaper PS3 Slim

Sony unveils smaller, cheaper PS3 Slim

If you've been waiting for the PlayStation 3 to get cheaper before you jumped on board, your wait is over. Sony just announced the new PS3 Slim, a 120GB PS3 that slims down the form factor of the console while also slimming the price down to $299. It's 33% smaller and 36% lighter than the original, and it'll be available the first week of September.

Don't need a smaller console? The old, fatty PS3s are still available while supplies last, with a price drop on those guys to be announced tomorrow. All PS3s still stand up as the best Blu-ray players around, so now seems like as good a time as any to upgrade your movie discs.

Im so glad this has finally been released. Now i can stop reading about all the rumours and hearing Sony deny them over and over again...

Does anyone know if this will be backward compatible with all PS2 games?

By duncan at 2:59 PM ON 08/18/09

I am wondering if this slim ps3 will be any better than the fat one? Cuz I have a fat one and I was wondering if it was worth spending $300 to get the slim one.

Sony needs to do something about all of the free space on the PS3 Slim. They need to either add another feature or do a design change for the top part.

No PS2 backwards compatibility, fewer connection options...
but it is smaller, has more hard drive space than the soon to be price matched 80GB model...
none of the PS3's have PS2 backwards compatibility anymore (other than the old first-gen models), so maybe that's not really an issue, especially when a PS2 is less than $100 now...
Hmmm, I think I'm really going to have to consider getting a PS3 now...

Cogadh. It's still an issue for those of us with limited space and a large PS2 collection.

"All PS3s still stand up as the best Blu-ray players around"

You're kidding, right? With the failure rate of the Blu-Ray players on the 40G model, especially? One need only do a Google search for blu-ray replacement tutorials to see how great they really are and realize where Sony skimped. Heck, search eBay to see how well replacement drives are selling and how many broken, "AS-IS" PS3s are on there and for how much they go for. Folks are desperate for replacement drives since Sony won't sell them and there are no alternate parts available.

I should know, I'm one of the unlucky (not so) few with a dead drive which, of course, totally gimps the system. Being out of warranty is a b*tch.

FINALLY!!

As much as I'd like to upgrade for this price drop, I can't see owning two playstations so I can play the fave classic games once in a while.

I love gaming, but I don't see Sony doing more than forcing people to upgrade while making their investment in earlier games a waste.

I would also like to see a PS2 upgrade, it's stupid that they don't listen to the consumer.

A lot of kids are going to want one for Christmas
