Behold the future of lighting. British lighting company Thorn and the U.K. government created this remarkable OLED desk lamp prototype. Part of Project TOPLESS (Thin Organic Polymeric Light Emitting Semiconductor Surfaces), the lamp emits high-quality white light using a mere 3.5 Watts, giving you the same amount of light you'd get from a 50-Watt halogen desk lamp.
Take a look at how outlandishly thin and elegant this desk lamp is, and start thinking about what the world will be like when these OLED fixtures populate the planet instead of incandescent light bulbs using technology invented 130 years ago. Here's a video showing this unreal OLED lamp in action:

Now this is awesome...much better than the CFL bulbs with mercury in them and apparently better in energy usage too.
Of course, they may have stretched a bit to make that name... :-)

Can it be dimmed? That is one of my pet-peeves about CFLs, even the ones that are "dimmable" only act as if they are dimmable (Work with dimmer switches, but are definitely not infinitely dimmable)

I have a Pablo Designs Brazo lamp with a similar design using conventional LEDs, and if anything it looks even cooler.

Wow that desk lamp is extremely thin. I would love to have that on my desk, It'll save energy, and last longer. Can't wait till OLED becomes standard on computer screens as well, although that may be some time away. http://ziggytek.com/

That is very slick! And at 3.5 watts, could be easily powered by solar roof panels. As far as dimming, I see that the lamp is made up of several OLEDs, maybe having a switch that turns on one to all OLEDs is the answer.

Project TOPLESS
That is the most AWESOME R&D codename ever.

How much for one? 500 dollars?

Does it work with a Mac or only with a Dell/PC architecture?
(sorry I couldn't help myself)
