Segways have had a tough time in big cities, mostly because the city planners can't seem to decide whether they should be ridden on the street or the sidewalk. Here in New York City they remain banned, as their wide stance would be a nightmare on our jammed sidewalks.
The Orbis Urban Mobility Vehicle might be one answer. Looking kind of like a one wheeled Segway, the Orbis' handle can be folded around the wheel, making it somewhat portable. This means that you can hide away your geeky transportation device once you get to work. Unfortunately, you'll still look like a total dork when riding it.

Amazing concept. This is a real innovation that can change our transportation modes forever.

WALK on your FEET
Didn't you see Wall-e?
Get up, get off the scooters, and WALK. These products are practically electric wheel chairs.

So is this a real thing, or just a drawing?
Because if it is just a drawing, I think I'd add jet-pack functionality and possibly something to do with laser-beams.
And I'd have it solar powered or something - so it would get on all the green-tech blogs as well, because if there's one thing green-tech blogs love, it's drawings of solar-powered things. They can't get enough of them.
Well... ok, maybe they can get enough of them... but what they can't get enough of is things that are happening In Actual Reality to fill a blog, so peeps like http://www.ecofriend.org fill the thing up with drawings of stuff, put out by design and architecture studios (because they want attention - there's no way this stuff will be made) and the eco-blogs faithfully report it as though though it's real... because they want attention too.
It's like this wonderful diorama of unreality - that slides (like billboards) between us and the road we drive down... hiding the business-as-usual that's going on behind.
So that's my thought for the day.

This looks so kool, but it still makes it something more to take up the sidewalk :P

I question your claim that "Segways have had a tough time in big cities". By 2009 Segway PTs could be legally operated on footpaths, cycle lanes and urban roads in 47 US States. Within these states, to the best of my knowledge the only "big cities" that currently ban their use is New York - they are legal elsewhere across the state of NY. Additionally, downtown San Francisco currently bans use on footpaths but not cycleways and city roads, and they are also banned on 'The Strip' in Las Vegas.
Also, your comment about a Segway PT's "wide stance" is bizarre - the wheelbase of the urban i2 model is narrower than the average person's shoulders, so a rider on a Segway PT takes up no more space than a pedestrian.

Got my Segway licence a year or two back in Lille, France. It was fun for half an hour, but it didn't like pavee, had no seat or baggage room, and I reckon a $50.00 used bicycle would beat it at most things. And, dorky or not, these things have no place on sidewalks.

whel it looks better then a segway.....
to be honest i would like to have one to use beside my bike.....
you know for those days that you want a quik nip somewhere to the shops or maby go to the movies.....
would not mind taking it out for a nice strole along the many nature bike pathes round here in holland.....
i would wanted to have a segway but it's far to expensive and for that price your better of buying and electrik moped.....
and then the hassle of legal or not.....
and whel i live in a flat and a segway does not fit in my basment lockup as it would need to fit beside my 28 speed mauntain bike....
so if this thing would be cheap enouthe and the range would be 50 km or more i would get one anyday over a segway...

Geeez..nobody haz even built one of these to show us that they have they have the technology to make this thing work. If they had, then this wouldn't be such a huge waste of time. Nick Taylor is absolutely correct. This is no more than a freakin cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, guys, EVERYTHING that is here today was because someone had an idea and put down the basic design on paper. Drawing is always the first step, troubleshooting prototypes and making the real thing comes after. Just be a little patient.

Wide stances are banned in NYC? Tough luck Larry Craig!
