Nearly confirmed: new iPods to have cameras

The annual iPod rollout is rumored to be on its way next month, and the breadth of the changes to Apple's multimedia players is becoming apparent. The biggest new revelation is that the iPod touch and nano are about to get themselves on-board cameras, revealed by case manufacturers who apparently didn't get the memo that this stuff is secret.

Nice. In one swoop, iPods suddenly gain a significant additional reason to carry them around all the time. The thing about having a camera or camcorder on a music player that you have with you all the time is that, well, it will turn out to be the most useful camera you own. Why's that? Because a camera sitting at home in a drawer doesn't take any pictures.

Looks like I'll be getting a new iPod Touch soon...

By xzach_attackx at 1:56 PM ON 08/14/09

my current ipod touch is completely broken. so i planned on sending it to apple and have them replace it for $120.

but then word of the super awesome looking zune HD got out, and i am really considering that. and all of a sudden, apple announces cameras on the ipod touch in response to microsoft.

dammit. i have no idea what i'm should get. this is a tough choice...

By ernie. at 2:02 PM ON 08/14/09

There's one minor inconsistency I see with the Touch cases.

If you look at the first case they put the headphone jack on the top left, but if you look at the second silicon case the hold button is on the top left.

By Michael at 4:57 PM ON 08/14/09

i doubt its the headphone jack the connector hole is on the bottom and the same size as any other ipod touch case...it looks more like they covered some of the hold button

and @charlie white i think you meant Jump for the iPod NANO case, and more proof from another source, Cult of Mac:

and yea definitely getting an ipod touch 3g....i cracked my screen recenlty and have been saving up for a new one and looks like im getting one of these

but i hope they release a 64gb version of the ipod touch this year.

By free4alla12 at 11:08 PM ON 08/14/09

Yeah sure its cool but why would you need to pay what will most likely be the biggest price tag ever for a music video player just to get the camera. I love ipods i have a touched but my phone and a very nice little camera all have well cameras why do i need an expensive ipod to break the screen or some thing for a camera

Everyone kind of knew this was coming. It was a matter of time before more leaks and rumors hit the fan. This pretty much confirms it. I'm wondering if the new iPods will offer anything else besides just the cameras. OLED screens would be nice. but that just might be wishful thinking. http://ziggytek.com/

ZuneHD has it over the new iPod w/camera. ZuneHD is for Music lovers. Ipod is for kids, just like 'Tricks' is for kids. There is no contest. You have to read the specs to know. Also the ZuneHD is priced very very competitvely too! You know the rest, Now get the Best!

By Boomer at 5:13 PM ON 08/16/09

yeah, i would agree with EagleNote.
Zune has more compatability with files
that the ipod doesnt.
different compressions for more music.
and it has radio. a major plus that seems to
be overlooked in this new era.

Trix are for kids.
"ILLUSIONS MICHEAL!"
"tricks are what a whore does for money."

The above comments just kill me...

Agreed, the camera will certainly be a 5m pixel., Not only will it take stills, but will also capture Hi-Def video and a larger screen for preview. Better than any camera phone I've seen or used.

The Zune includes a radio... Who cares? When was the last time you turned on your car radio? 4-6 years ago...

The Zune is more compatible files... You got me on that one. But still... who cares? All 4 machines I own are Mac, I use iTunes to manage my content and I use an iPod to make my content portable... Can someone answer... What's the app of choice for Windows users for managing all media content?

Lastly... from all the rumors, reports and from cousin Jonny's uncle's, sister's, neice... the iPod touch will be least 16, 32 64gb. With the 64 likely at $399. Include a 5m-pixel camera, Same top end hardware as the iPhone 3Gs.

I think the last big question yet to be answered... Will the iPod Touch include a GPS chip? I certainly hope so... dvice.com should work on that instead of posting an already month old rumor about a camera...

Lastly, I leave with one question... How much market share does Microsoft own in the MP3/portable media player market compared to Apple?

Have a great day!

Re/ Knight292's questions --

I use my car radio regularly;
The App of choice for my PC (the heart of my media-center) is VLC. I manage my content by organizing video files into folders, subfolders, and etc. -- TV by show title / season / episode number and name; films by decade / year / title. Simplest way I've found.

Music is still handled by iTunes, tho', which is the answer that you were looking for, I suspect.

As a brand-new owner of an iTouch, I'm planning on returning it once the rumors prove true -- the camera and/or mic would make the touch the indispensable device for me. That, plus my shitty little trak-fone (which I use for about 12 minutes a week) and I'm happy as a clam.

Don't need the GPS myself, but it might be nice.
