Soda fountain of the future offers over 100 flavor choices, all unhealthy

Are you sick of only having one or two options when it comes to what flavor of Coke you want? I mean, regular or diet — what is this, the '70s?

Coke is showing off its new "Freestyle" soda fountain, one that uses a touchscreen to allow you to choose one of over 100 flavor options. Curious as to how it works? Stare into the terrifying, soulless eyes of the presenter above as he shows off how the soda machine of the future works. Finally, a way to get fat my way.

Dang...that guy's eyes ARE creepy!

By Jamion at 4:17 PM ON 07/21/09

@richpit I was thinking the same, doesn't that guy ever blink? I think the machine offers to many options, and though over time will be excepted a lot of people will just look at it and go "what am I supposed to do?"

It's not that he doesn't blink, it's that you can see white all the way around his pupils.

As far as the machine goes, it's brilliant, but it needs to be faster. Lag that big on a touchscreen should not happen any more.

You will not "get fat" drinking a glass of soda.

Please grow some.

Are you guys just extremely cynical about everything that is not a Mac or NBC affiliate?

By Mikee at 5:09 PM ON 07/21/09

Dear MacBeth:

Coca-Cola and NBC have been working together for years on many different projects and ventures.

By acord7119 at 5:46 PM ON 07/21/09

I think he didn't blink because he was concentrating to much on what he was reading, but yes it was very creepy.

By trinity343 at 6:20 PM ON 07/21/09

i know it's talking about using this for restaurants primarily but he seemed to hint at it being just like a regular machine you could find in store as well. the issue i can think of for that is....where would you get the cups?

By kae95 at 8:26 PM ON 07/21/09

my guess, should this become available for purchase by the mass public is that the supplies would be made available much as everything else is...online or at a public retailer.

I think the idea is genius.

By Schnide at 8:32 PM ON 07/21/09

What about ice?

By murc at 8:34 PM ON 07/21/09

I agree with kae95.....this thing will SELL BIG.

Adam Frucci...I read articles done by you everyday for at least a year...and if I had to guess...Your a democrat, you voted for Obama, You live in California, and your a vegetarian......how close am I?

sweet!

Apart from the fact that corn syrup and large portion sizes are killing us, I think this machine has potential. However, as someone mentioned, the lag time is awful (I couldn't imagine using that on the other side of the counter because of the interface and dispensing time). Also it should have a manual dispense button, to get a little more or less drink-ice ratio. This brings up a whole new genre of custom drink flavoring and market distribution unheard of yet. It's getting close to the kind of thing envisioned in Gibson's Idoru, and with extrusion of other foods mixed with base flavor palettes, you could have a whole food replicator device, complete with built in delivery management and accounting.

that guy was creepy he also sounded boring the whole time he was talking the only thing i dislike about this is what about all the other types of sodas i like dr pepper they need to add more soda types that most people would buy

By TechEnthusiast at 3:16 AM ON 07/22/09

This sounds like an awesome idea, and yes, the lag time is horrible, buying a drink should be instant. Also, I agree that there should be an ice/water ratio regarding how much you would like. The less lag, the better. I don't want to stand around for 5 minutes waiting to pour my drink, that's just an inconvenience. I want my drink, AND I WANT IT NOW! J.G. WENTWORTH 877-CASH NOW!! LOL

'You will not "get fat" drinking a glass of soda.'

No, you will get fat drinking soda frequently, as in 4-5 times a week as most people do. See soda is not an occasional beverage to most, it is a constant staple of their diet, which is why soda companies are amongst the richest, dummy.

TAhe video doesn't work for me... It says I have to become friends with the person who posted it.

By Jared at 9:10 PM ON 07/26/09

Diet drinks have zero calories...so hard to get fat from. 4-5 sodas a week won't get you fat either. 4-5 a day likely will add on some lbs pretty quickly. But this also all depends on what the rest of your diet is like.

Soft drinks are the new socialist demon.

HATE, HATE, HATE.

There. Feel better, commies?

What's the matter? With Palin gone, you've got nothing better to hate this week?
