A couple of days ago I was visiting some friends in Estonia, who had just completed construction on a straw bale house in what I would call a Fred Flintstone Adobe style. Being organic, earthy people, they wouldn't dream of installing a fancy plasma or LCD TV, but decided to go instead with this organic model that receives only one channel, the Natural Straw Network.
In fact, this opening in the wall is known as a truth window, and is used to prove that the wall is really made from actual straw bales. All they need now is some bamboo speakers, playing the sound of rustling waves of wheat, to round out the organic home theater experience.

While this is an interesting story, it doesn't belong on Dvice. It feels like an attempt to post an article when you have nothing else to write about.

Personally, I think this is a great post.
dvice, as part of Syfy, is read by people with a vested interest in science fiction and "the future." Generally speaking, this site is for people who *want* the future NOW.
A house made of straw bales pushes both ends of the spectrum: one thinks "straw bales? in this day and age?" and two answers result: "luddite throwback?" and "green tech FTW?"
We cannot reach the future until everyone can. Technology stories like this serve (imho) to break down our preconceptions about where our tech level is, where it should be, how other people live, and how proud they are of that fact.

SyFy (SciFi) has gone to the dogs, just like MTV did. Wrestling? FAKE "ghots hunters" shows (getting tire of the same commercial "I think something just touched my leg" and those fake jumps by the guys on screen are getting really old, and those are just the commercials)
Whoever is deciding what to show on a SCIENCE FICTION channel has obviously gone insane. Maybe that's why they're changing the name? Since they play a lot of junk that isn't science fiction, they needed to get away from a name that screamed science fiction...
Totally depressing.

"We cannot reach the future until everyone can. "
Incredibly silly statement. Spoon-fed, regurgitated eco-gibberish.
Right now, there are tribes in Africa and South America that have no concept of electricity, magnetism, thermal conduction, etc. Does this mean that we are not here?

Granted the grass hut is a touchy feely crunchy granola tree hugger concept... but what good is technology if it only leaves us all dead in 50 years. A house and lifestyle that allows our cilivilisation to survive, is much more high tech then the house that contributes to the fall of civilization. Just because it's green, doesn't mean it isn't the best idea, and what we should aim for in the future. (But I still want my OLED TV....)

So where is the TV ? What is so Estonian about this, no TVs ?
By ThisAnd at 1:18 PM ON 07/05/09
so, essentially, you are just trying brag that you went to Estonia so we can "ooh and ahh" at you for being such a well-rounded world traveler.

damn hippies...poor straws....

This is a dumb thing to post on dvice. I don't care if its for people who want the future now, I want to read articles about gadgets and stuff on dvice not estonian mud houses with truth windows. Jerks!
By From Estonia at 9:44 AM ON 07/06/09
I cant believe this article and some of the responses!
I bet the states have more straw houses than there are ppl living in Estonia, This is the second straw house I have ever heard of being built! Estonians are not to be compared with tribal africans in simbabwe or eritrea! If some jerks decide to build an eco friendly low budget house from straw, then that has nothing to do with representing the estonian ways!
Most estonian households have ATLEAST 2 tv's a HiFi system, iPhones, atleast two PC's a laptop and unlike anywhere in the world u can be in GOD KNOW what village, step out the door, pop out your laptop and woila... WiFi! (Bet u didn't know we ever heard of such a "HIGH TECH" thing!) In fact, Im writing this from a laptop connected by ad-hoc wireless network, set up by nobody else but me!
Skype, Kazaa and most of your precious online casino interfaces were, are and WILL be constructed by us. Talk about high tech? FOR GODS SAKE! ESTONIANS WERE THE ONES THAT FOUND OUT THAT IT INDEED REQUIRES BOTH OF THE SEXES TO MAKE A FREAKING BABY!
So u can take your Transforming MacBooks, no good iPhones, and what ever else you call HIGH TECH, and Shove It Up Your...

@FromEstonia.
Please be clear that this was never intended to be an indictment of the Estonian people. I am myself a dual US-Estonian citizen, and the house was built by an American. I merely included the Estonian part to add interest.
@ThisAnd
If I included the fact that I was in Estonia to bury my Father, and return his belongings to the US, would you be a little less resentful? I thought that info would make the blog a bit depressing, don't you?

that comment wasnt so much directed towards the poster of the entry but rather to some other commentators.
By themisfire at 12:18 PM ON 07/07/09
to be honest im astonished at the comments on here, so many of you are into technology but apperantly only if its new tech... straw bale building has been around for thousands of years true, news flash! Straw bale building is a 100% renewable building source, one of the most efficient insulators ever and CHEAP! 2500 square foot house for under 80,000 including land in Colorado! in floor heat south facing windows = no need to even turn on the infloor heat until january! so basically its a great post and one that schould be respected, i agree its not "techy", it is "greenie" but a technology that could save our ever changing climateas we know it... learn befor bashing you half wits!
