Google announces Chrome OS; Windows and Mac OS shiver in their boots

Now it's Google's turn to create an operating system. The company announced Chrome OS, "an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks." Expect to see those netbooks running the Google OS in the second half of 2010, and all kinds of PCs running it shortly thereafter.

Like its 9-month-old browser brother Chrome, the Chrome OS will be speedy. It'll be designed to start up in a few seconds and get you to the web in no time flat, and all applications written for it will also run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. And, it's all separate from Android, Google's successful cellphone operating system.

This is going to be big. Really big. Google says we'll hear more about this world-changing project this fall. Meanwhile, get used to apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, and the other Google Apps, because they're only the beginning of a lightweight, instant-on, partially cloud-based, secure computing world.

this sounds exciting.

maybe it will be like linux; it's fast and customizable, but it's not able to run most programs. i hope not.

i also hope it's good for gaming, but it's unlikely.

and it better be good enough to compete with windows 7, which is what vista was supposed to be, awesome.

By TH4T6UY at 3:35 AM ON 07/08/09

As a gamer, this doesn't really do much for me. But, still, could be useful should I decide to run a small notebook or something for classes.

Linux will be quaking, but I have doubts about Mac. Possibly Windows.

So when is Goggle going to get antitrust scrutiny????

By Giggity at 11:16 AM ON 07/08/09

When ePaper becomes more prevalent, light OS's will become very useful and this will be fully established by then (hopefully).
The only real problem is that even open-source OS's (although great), really have not been expanded upon to any reasonable degree to compete with Windows.
As far as I am concerned, if it cant run windows apps, then it is lacking since the market is dominated by them.
And it will be quite a while until a cloud-based app can compete with a desktop deployed app or apps (like MS Office for example). Too many failure points.
I know that I would be pissed off if I had an important paper to update and the cloud server was in the middle of a DOS attack.
Plus, web tech tends to be very prone to hacking and spamming...more so than client-based apps.
Dont get me wrong..I am looking forward to new OS's. MS needs real competition, as they are going crazy with OS versions and releases every 2 years at crazy prices. Plus, competition breeds innovation.

By Giggity at 11:26 AM ON 07/08/09

Traveler...Google wont get hit with antitrust scrutiny..only MS does.
Check out the hypocrital lawsuits against MS and the IE browser in Europe as opposed to the lack of concern over iPhone and its lock on browsers. At least MS lets you d/l other browsers.

By Baroquem at 12:23 PM ON 07/08/09

@Giggity: I counted 40 browser apps offered for the iPhone in the iTunes Store before I got tired and stopped. Just how many do you want?

By Icarus at 1:28 PM ON 07/08/09

If this OS works anything like Chrome does now, i'll buy it instantly. Better than any thing MS or Apple has cranked out.

By TheGigaShadow at 3:22 PM ON 07/08/09

Like Linux this will never be used by anyone other than a small group of technophiles. Mainstream use is not and never will be in it's future.

By rico001 at 4:36 PM ON 07/08/09

Instant on

What? I can't install ?

Instant off.

Um, there are plenty of people using GNU-linux. Ubuntu is a very solid OS.

Not being able to run software designed for another platform is not a failing of the platform, it's a failing of the software developers.

And yes if you want to play games, use windows. After all so many people using windows is why game are predominantly made for windows. If a different platform were dominant games would be developed for it instead. It's not like windows is a system that is super appealing to program on.

But you can always dual boot. Use windows when you absolutely have to, but linux or whatever else you might prefer as a serious OS. Windows is still little more than hacked together toy OS that is unbelievably popular for no particularly good reason.

I for one am glad to see more options for OSs as I actually like to choose an OS based on what it does, rather than how much commercial software I can purchase for it.

this would be great on an asus eee machine.

@Baroquem ..my bad. I dont have an iPhone, so I incorrectly got my info from a recent article on Apple's restrictive approval system.

The word "cloud" when used in reference to offsite resources fills me with a horrible rage.

Why? Because "cloud" is management speak for "no I don't understand it; I don't care; no you can't have any money for the project, just make it work and have it done by tomorrow for my keynote."

By cyplesma at 2:21 PM ON 07/12/09

@ Maj
not just no you can't have any money for the project, but also more to the point of. "No I am not paying for it, period."

By geeksRUS at 8:05 AM ON 07/21/09

As a software app company we just could never afford to develop our appli for more than one OS. All our recruitment is based on .NET technology as that's where the technological advances are going (not talking about games here). As a consumer I would love to see a choice - I'm fed up with Windows upgrades eating away at my pc's memory etc. But see the real problem. Unless there is some common software platform for development companies to use easily and inexpensively companies like us will always have to calculate the best roi.
