As if those killer drones flying over Afghanistan and Iraq aren't lethal enough, here comes the next generation: Excalibur. This 13-foot-long prototype is just half-sized; by the time the radio-controlled hovering jet is unleashed on the battlefield, it'll travel at scary-fast 460mph speeds. The mini-jet drone will carry four Hellfire missiles, twice as many as its Predator drone predecessor.
Check out the way it can take off vertically, eliminating the need for runway. Then it sneaks around in the sky, hanging there and waiting to rain down its murderous destruction anywhere on the globe, 24/7. Get out of the way, bad guys! It's amazing the way it can fly either upside down or right side up, firing its missiles at will. Someday soon (if not already), human pilots will be unnecessary, and resistance will be futile.

Why is the American flag backward ?
By pd_THOR at 3:42 PM ON 07/23/09
@bossanova123 It's to simulate an actual flag flying from the tail of the aircraft. You're "seeing the flag from the other side" is all.
By Schussener at 4:36 PM ON 07/23/09
The field of blue on the flag always goes toward the front. Same with the flag on a soldier's shoulder.

Looks like a proto-Hunter Killer to me...

Anybody catch that the talking head's name is Tom Clancy?

thats a big advantage for countries with no/crappy runways.
cant way to see the real deal big version in the coming years.

"As if those killer drones flying over Afghanistan and Iraq aren't lethal enough"
Its so sad they way you look at things. They save lives to. Also most of all of the killings in Iraq are Muslim on Muslim killings. Check ot out:

I agree with you 'Pings'.
The line that caught my eye was "and waiting to rain down its murderous destruction anywhere on the globe"
god forbid that we kill our enemy.

While it looks kind of cool I think I should probably point out that the reason the Predator only carries 2 Hellfire missiles is because the primary drone delivery system for the Hellfire missile is the MQ9-Reaper, which is capable of carrying 14 Hellfire missiles.
Additionally, while VTOL capability and speed are nice loitering ability is considered much more critical and given its relatively short wingspan (a neccessity for VTOL and higher speed flight) I doubt it has a 14-28 hour loitering time.
By m007368 at 10:52 PM ON 07/23/09
Look at the speed reqs. It would most likely replace the MQ-1 Predator. This model has VTOL, travels 3.5X times faster, and carries twice the payload.
Predator - 135 MPH Max
80-100 MPH Cruise
Reaper 300 MPH Max
170-200 MPH Cruise
All in all a great upgrade. Heck you could deploy these from Cruiser / Destroyers where there is currently no tactical UAV system capable of this. It is also much faster than the proposed helicopter drone Firescout, which has weapons delivery as part of its missions package.
Think of it as basically a mini F-35C.

I'm with yellowflash. It's a prototype Hunter-Killer. Can you say Skynet?

Murc, since when did America bombing someone mean we're enemies with them? I'm pretty sure we've almost always liked Canadians and we've bombed their troops quite a few times over the last eight years.
Plus, I'm fairly sure America is not at war with American troops and I think we've shown a few of them the "shock" and "horrific death" part of our war plans too.
Soldiers volunteered to make war, they volunteered to have their lives put in danger, but the civilians of the countries we're fighting didn't get so much as a harshly worded note before the bombing started, and so long as the death that armies are delivering becomes more and more disconnected and distant from human interaction and intelligence, the more civilians are going to die because fifty terrorists in a cave looks exactly like a wedding party to Ted, your company's patriotic computer guy.
By murc at 12:31 AM ON 07/24/09
and friendly fire got tied into this thread for what reason???
By wdwyer at 1:24 AM ON 07/24/09
@Braystreet, name one American bomb dropped on Canadian soil. Do you actually want to make a point, or are you happy with just spouting nonesense with nothing to back it up? Name the incidents where Canadians died because of American bombs dropped.
If it is a case of friendly fire, it is just that, an accident.
How does this "Excaliber drone" equate to that? By the way, how does 50 terrorists in a cave equate to a wedding party? Your being too specific. When one of these drones is sent on a mission, your acting like they take these things on drive-bys. They are not sent out to look for places to drop bombs. If there is a target of interest, it is a target for a reason. It is sent to the target for a reason.

Chill out all. No need for the flames.
Just fyi... here's your Canadians bombed by Americans example. Tragically by freindly fire.

You wouldn't have the same attitude if it was one of your loved ones that was "accidentally" killed by friendly fire.
Have the testicular fortitude to admit you made a mistake. America has bombed Canadian troops, PERIOD. There is no excuse for it, so stop pretending as if it were unavoidable.

Possibly the dumbest thing ever posted to the internet.

The flag is backwards representing going into combat not retreating from it. Imagine the if the uav is moving forward, the flag would fly that way.
