Epson shows off hologram-like projection display in Tokyo

Until our holographic displays live up to the crystal clear, hyper-realistic quality of sci-fi movies, we can enjoy life-like displays like the one shown recently at the International Stationery and Office Products Fair in Japan. Presented by Epson, the rear projector beams a video presentation onto a 0.3 millimeter thin slab of glass cut into the shape of a person.

The result is an effect that almost matches the virtual reality of holographic displays, missing only the three-dimensional aspect. You can check out video of the amazing display in action here.

I'm sorry to say I don't think that this measures up at all. At first I thought it was some sort of 2d hologram projector but it's not even close to a hologram. This sort of technology has been out for many years.

A bril project destroyed by poor chroma keying.

It is good to know that the concept of holograms hasnt been entirely forgotten, but I think Nonegative is correct. This has been out a while.
And it is odd that this would be cut out in the shape of a person...
Wouldnt that ultimately mean limited range of movement for the image?
I guess that the next step might just be to display the image directly inside the glass.
Kind of like they did with the library archives in the latest version of The Time Machine.
Still not a true hologram, but a step in the right direction.

I'm a little afraid of them calling this a hologram. I don't care much that it isn't 3D, but it's a display onto a sheet of glass, not in the air. What if everyone starts calling this a hologram and they scrap the idea of having the projections appear without anything to project on, simply because this is easier.

that is not a hologram. hologram need to be projected in the air. that means no glass!!!

Actually, By the literal definition of the word this is a hologram, but so are T.V.'s so it still isn't that impressive, although I have seen videos on YouTube of glass-less holograms including one impressive three dementional hologram projected on water mist in Japan, but there were some just projected in the air complete with people putting their hands through them.

O.K. It's hard to find the glass-less ones but there are some close seconds, 3D holograms that seem to use glass reflections but are suspended in the middle of glass containers instead of on them.
