Archos 9 PCtablet netbook runs Windows 7

Archos follows its competent media players — the Archos 5 and Archos 7 — with the Archos 9 PCtablet. Instead of a 5- or 7-inch screen, this one has a 9-inch touch-sensitive display, and its new-found versatility makes the 22-ounce unit more netbook than mere media player.

It's packing more power than its brandmates, employing the latest Intel Atom Z515 processor, with storage choices consisting of either a 60GB or 120GB hard drive. Thankfully, instead of Archos's own clumsy operating system, this one comes loaded with Microsoft Windows 7.

We're hoping Archos has improved that touchscreen, which we found a bit cumbersome in the Archos 5 and Archos 7. Whether its resistive touch system will be as responsive as other advanced capacitive touchscreens remains to be seen. The company hasn't announced pricing yet, planning to ship the PCtablet this Fall. Here's the Archos press release:

ARCHOS REDEFINES MOBILE COMPUTING WITH ITS TABLET PC

New Ultra-Thin and Ultra-Fast ARCHOS 9 PCtablet Delivers Full PC Computing, Video Conferencing and Access to Media on a Full Touch Screen Handheld Device.

DENVER, CO - July 2, 2009 ARCHOS is leading the innovation charge in the MiniPC market with the introduction of the ARCHOS 9 PCtablet. This new PCtablet combines the performance of a high-end PC with breathtaking design, excellent ergonomics and an astonishing touch interface. It gives PC users an entirely new way to work, stay connected and enjoy the Web and digital media on an ultra-thin and extremely fast full touch-screen tablet.

The ARCHOS 9 PCtablet is the ultra portable PC; extremely thin, just 0.63", and ultra lightweight, less than 22.29 oz. The ARCHOS 9 pushes the boundaries of style and function.

With a full touch-sensitive 9" screen, users can enjoy a comfortable computing experience. The resistive screen allows emails and documents to be composed easily via a built-in virtual keyboard. The innovative optical trackball and buttons allows easy navigation on screen, and provides an uncompromised PC experience.

The ARCHOS 9 features the new Z515 Intel® processor, Microsoft Windows 7® Operating system and an integrated multimedia platform that uses WiFi 802.11b/g connection and Bluetooth 2.1 for extremely fast computing anywhere, anytime.

Additional software includes Microsoft Office®, Web TV & Radio, video conference, antivirus, parental control, photos and movies edition applications and more.

The ARCHOS 9 PCtablet will be available this fall, 2009.

"Thankfully, instead of Archos's own clumsy operating system, this one comes loaded with Microsoft Windows 7."

Great replace a nice Linux based OS with the hideous bloated, DRM laden, behemoth Windows 7 :( They would be better off putting Ubuntu on it.

By root at 4:40 PM ON 07/02/09

Or,or we could use an OS that more than 20 hardcore people know how to use, maybe? Because I don't wanna have to educate the current windows market on how to install a simple app in Ubuntu's using commands who are use to a self extracting .exe. Do you?

By JJJ at 5:21 PM ON 07/02/09

I'd rather have Ubuntu on it. Windows xp sucks. Vista sucks even more. Now, 7? Screw that bulky crap.
I like ubuntu.
I believe it's more user friendly than Windows.

By Antoinebugleboy at 5:44 PM ON 07/02/09

Does it have some sort of a keyboard?

By xzach_attackx at 7:58 PM ON 07/02/09

the same thing is happening with 7 that happened to vista. a lot of people hated it just because other people hated it, even if the didn't use it.

i bet at least half of the comments saying that windows 7 is crap are written by people that haven't even use 7.

7 is actually a good operating system. if you didn't like vista, you will like 7. don't put it down just because it still looks like vista.

I hated Vista, but Windows 7 is fantastic. Seems zippy and clean, the opposite of Vista. I just need to get use to the reorganized sections (which I didn't learn by avoiding Vista). Vista was the first Windows version I didn't immediately upgrade onto at launch, but I definitely will move over to a 64-bit Windows 7 when final arrives.

Meanwhile, Ubuntu doesn't seem significantly different than the other Linux distros (of which there are MANY). Not sure why it has such a fanatically following. Debian, which Ubuntu is based on heavily, is much cleaner and lightweight.

Even so, I still use OpenBSD for anything I can't do on Windows.

How many of you critics have done anything more than heard about Windows 7, I was lucky enough to be a Beta tester.

I was saddened by the failure known as Vista, but Windows 7 is an amazing success.

I believe many future devices should utilize Windows 7. I also think this product will be a great success.

I love how the 'Additional Software' include Parental Control, I wouldn't see myself, nor other parents giving this to their kid. But you never know.

The Atom Z515 has no hardware virtualization support, so I don't think you will be able to run WinXP compatibility mode in Win7 on this hardware. That's a deal killer for me.

Great! I can use it to browse www.hongkongtourmap.com easily on the road.

system 7 rocks. basic version has small footprint and boots fast. i would like to see how the virtual keyboard on the screen would work, although a small wireless keyboard and mouse would be cool too. this is what i am waiting for in a netbook device.....

By Mihos at 9:24 AM ON 07/03/09

Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Anyone who says it is bloated has obviously not been developing for it. It can be ran in an absurdly tiny space.

By smith134 at 2:01 AM ON 07/06/09

I like Archos 7, and this one looks cool, but sometime no physical keyboard is a deal breaker for me. I do not need Windows 7 on a portable device unless I am going to use office or something like that. Their onscreen keyboard is nice but there is no way I could type with that for long periods of time.

Have any of you downtalkers of windows 7 actually USED windows 7?
Bulky is vista, win7 is light and much faster.
Now I have used Ubuntu and can use it, but I still prefer using the newer windows platform.
7 fixed many problems with the vista client, and It's not even released yet.

windows seven is awesome, i've used it personally, and it redeems windows name

By anderl at 4:21 PM ON 09/07/09

It's not about xp, vista nor w7 - it's about windows or not. - it's about having a free choice of OS! Several people like to decide themself -why not let them? - Why must the users absolutly buy windows? - Because otherweise Windows will loss A LOT of market size and profit. - Windows can't stand FREE compitition! - It's that simple! - Compared to other OS, Windows will lose face ...

Even if you haven't used Windows 7, just hearing about the minor changes and useless programs they've added that I don't want, incompatibility issues with almost everything I buy, and the old fashion that it just doesn't have as many customization options as Ubuntu, I don't care about it at all. Plus, I've heard it's still a glitch like Vista was, regardless of what I hear from second-hand chat, but apparently what my friends say about it. Maybe it is okay for normal people's uses, but Ubuntu fits my needs, and I don't care much for video games or such but just being able to find things easily like it does, and its security is much easier to where I haven't seen a single virus or problem yet, it takes up so little space, and is incomparable to the time I would be wasting on any Windows product that has to do every process the slow way. Ubuntu just impresses me, because whatever Vista takes an hour or more to do, I'm sad if it takes more than 10 minutes on Ubuntu. But I will admit a major issue: the only reason I'm dueling Ubuntu and Vista is because of the possibility of Vista updating to where it can download my graphics card, but apparently... it hasn't come out yet. But I'm still going to get an A9, and hopefully I won't have to wait on "preorder" much longer in the US.
