Panasonic's limp remote concept is both cool and unsettling

Panasonic\'s limp remote concept is both cool and unsettling

Now here's an interesting concept device: a gel remote control that lies limp on your coffee table. Until you approach it, that is.

Constructed of a soft, flesh-like gel, the remote appears cold when off. Once turned on, however, it seems to come to life. A soft light emanates somewhere from within as the center of the device begins to slowly rise and fall, mimicking the tranquil motions of breath. Left undisturbed, the remote will slumber peacefully. But should a human hand approach, sensors inside alert it to the imminent touch. It stops breathing, grows rigid - the light from within is extinguished.
Well, I will say that I'm intrigued, but not intrigued enough to want to own one of these things.

Ten bucks says that if released, stories of old folks beating these remotes to 'death' after mistaking them for some sort of animal will be akin to the WiiMotes' assault on tv screens.

Think about it, grandpa rolls downstairs for a nightcap and spies something in the living room glowing AND breathing. He is not going to be curious, he is gonna grab his house shoe and beat that creature from another world flat.

Here is another really plausible and more likely scenario. Man falls asleep watching tv, with remote on chest. For whatever reason, remote goes into hibernation and starts doing its slug routine. Man wakes up, feels something moving on him, freaks out and heaves it across the room just as it goes rigid in his hand. It's flight path will always be such that it smashes through his wife's Precious Memories curio cabinet.

Bravo, the slug-mote is sure to be a huge hit.

@Karpet:

If you read it more carefully, it says that it comes to life with heat, not all of the time. The 3rd scenerio would fit that category, but it never said it would move on him, just breath, so I couldn't expect that to be the case. But for the grandfather coming down at night, it won't be glowing or breathing at that point, unless he gets much closer to it and already touched it.

Soft, flesh-like gel?
Once turned on, it begins to slowly rise and fall while breathing?
With imminent touch it stops breathing & grows rigid?

This has pron-toy written all over it.

My question is: Why?

It doesn't add any features or make the channel surfing experience any better. It just adds creepy/ real-time phallic qualities to a remote control. I'm totally not comfortable with that. Why would I want a breathing remote control?

I would love to have sat in on the meeting where this was talked about. Awkward!

Somebody get Cronenberg on the phone, we're getting closer !

By karpet at 9:41 PM ON 06/12/09

@ T: Find me the words heat or warmth or in the description. It says when undisturbed it breaths, when it senses a hand it becomes rigid.

Third of all: I only purposed 2 scenarios.

Read more carefully.

This has to be a joke, right? A soft fleshy remote that grows rigid when you touch it? Yeah....

The guy who pitched this probably did it on April 1st and was shocked/bemused that everyone thought it was a real idea...

@djc....I was thinking the same thing. This is the NEW FLESH!

Kinda reminds me of the PDA phone thing Nina Sharp from Fringe uses.

It's seems perfectly obvious to me that to go on living, without owning one of these makes no sense at all.

By Kitty at 11:31 AM ON 06/13/09

I don't mind foreign objects going 'rigid' in my hand, but I still don't see the point in buying this. >.>

Add a little vibration and I'd have the perfect gift for my wife.

By shockjay at 11:17 AM ON 06/22/09

This has to be a hoax. If it isn't, you might as well change the first "a" in Panasonic to an "e".

This is really unique and only one of its kind and really cool gadget.
