OLED bracelet is a Pip-Boy 3000 by any other name

OLED bracelet is a Pip-Boy 3000 by any other name

Universal Display, based out of New Jersey, is partnering up with LG to make a wrist-mounted OLED display that bears a striking resemblance to the Pip-Boy 3000 from Fallout. You wear it like a watch, yet it has a roomy 4-inch bendable screen and it weighs half a pound, so it's got some heft to it.

Other than helping people track their way across post-apocalyptic wastes, Universal Display's vibrant color screen would be great for video, whether the company plans for this to be a communication device for professionals, or a consumer unit for folks who don't mind looking goofy.

Oh man, that's sweet! It needs a drab metal exterior and some knobs, though. Oh, and V.A.T.S. =)

So now we have Leela's wristband from Futurama?

It looks like like a toy.. and not even a good one at that.

I do like the concept though. But the future developers of such devices should think about how user friendly is it and why should we wear something like this. Mobile phones are very practical and getting smarter by the day. You have calls, instant messages, web browsers, GPS, media players etc, so why should we be wearing "Pip-Boys" on our arms instead? Manufacturers are really gonna have to put their heads together to top a common smart phone ;))

Actually, Universal Display is developing this in a joint venture with the Department of Defense as a durable mobile communication device for soldiers. So they aren't too concerned with the aesthetics at the moment. But a sleeker consumer-level device could obviously be a lucrative spin-off.

Me want. Seriously. I've been waiting for this my whole life too. Why carry a cell phone/cam/gps/wifi device, when you can have all in one, on your wrist. Sure, the iPhone does all that stuff, but you have to worry about where to keep it. Making it part of your wardrobe keeps it safe- just hope it's waterproof... but if they're working on this for the mil, then it just might be. They need to develop another "industry standard" beyond a bulky VGA cord for when you need to use a cable- HDMI would be a step in the right direction (sound and video, thin profile), include data transfer via Firewire when Bluetooth and WiFi are out of the question. I love it, and I know there's not a sci-fi lover or gamer who wouldn't want one, or save to buy one.

I would gladly trade in my smart phone for a wrist mounted device like this. All the PDA and phone functions can stay on the wrist and the use of Bluetooth headsets can make telephony just as simple as it is today. The only thing that would trump this is those micro display glasses.
