Nanotech breakthrough: New batteries last 3x longer

We laughed at the 6831 lithium-ion laptop batteries powering the Tesla Roadster, wondering if somebody would ever figure out how to make batteries more efficient and last longer. It looks like a research team from the University of Waterloo has done just that, instead using lithium sulfur. These new batteries owe their increased power to nanotechnology:

The team assembled a nanostructure of carbon rods separated by empty channels, sulfur was then melted to fill the tiny voids thanks to capillary forces. All the spaces were uniformly filled with sulfur, thus maximizing the surface area in direct contact with carbon and boosting battery efficiency.

The result? These batteries last three times longer than lithium ion batteries. Not only are they more powerful, but they're lighter and cheaper to manufacture. Now, will they pack 6831 lithium sulfur batteries into the Tesla Roadster? If so, maybe it'll be cheaper than $101,500, and have a cruising range of 732 miles.

This is great news and not a moment too soon. U of Waterloo is riding in like the US Calvary did in all those old westerns just in time to save the day.

So this makes what? The dozenth new battery tech promising 2-10 times the storage density of current batteries? It's all vaporware... we're never going to get this crap. Perpetually 5 years away until everyone hopes you forgot about it.

I agree,so many 'breakthroughs" in batteries over the years promising huge increase in storage and life.oh dont forget cheaper and easier to produce,im still waiting to see them.

At the very least, it is another fingerhold up the sheer face of the nanotech learning curve. Remember, we don't even have a grasp of exactly what forces make up the basic four food groups of matter, strong and weak nuclear, electromagnetic and gravitational. Efficient use of electron energy is a long way up the wall yet.

Yeah, this battery thing will never work. It's best if you just quit trying to make a better battery.

PS, a better battery was already created. It was in the EV-1 and the Toyota Rav4-EV; a NIMH (nickel metal hydride) battery that we have owned the rights to since GM crushed all the EV-1s. This battery is still running in the hundreds of Rav4-EVs still on the road, running just fine after 100,000 miles many of them.

We, the Chevron (formerly Texaco) oil company, want you to know that we have been keeping those wonderfully capable batteries locked away so you CAN'T BUY THEM and YOU CAN'T USE THEM.

We like that you have to use our poison chemicals to get to work everyday. We don't care that it is killing your children and causing asthma and a host of other ailments. We don't care because we make Billions Of Dollars off your stupidity. If you were smart you'd have an electric car or something like the Chevy Volt so you can get you to work USING ABSOLUTELY NO GAS at all. We love the Prius and Insight because you can't get to work without using gas; have you ever driven to work going LESS than 34 miles per hour the whole way? We love the Prius because when you go over 35 MPH the gas engine kicks in and our pockets get fatter.

Anyway, we got you "over a barrell."

Love, The Oil Companies.

Aaaahhh battery storage capacity. We pump so much money into research on renewable sources of energy when we really need to pump billions into electrical storage! Think about it, if we could hold onto the power from a single thunderstorm and transmit it to our homes or vehicles, energy crisis solved.

The oil companys can feel the enemy at the gates. It's just a matter of time before they can no longer hold down the price of oil and the further it goes up, the more feasible altertnataves such as battery stored power becomes mainstream. But again it will be a "wait and see" if this tech gets swept under the rug as well. And from what I hear, the Tesla S series is looking to be around the 40-60k US range. And as a good chunck of that is the battery, the price would come down, demand would go up, production would go up, and the price would come down...lather rinse, repeat.

ps: Captchas here suck.
