Based on our experience yesterday, updating the iPhone to the latest software, iPhone 3.0, is a pretty smooth experience — more trouble-free than, say, last year's disastrous iPhone 3G activation woes. But we're still hearing anecdotal stories here and there that the iPhone 3.0 update has bricked more than a few phones.

No problem getting OS 3.0 on my iPod Touch.
By beowuff at 1:12 PM ON 06/18/09
Both my and my wife's 1st gen iPhones now have 3.0 on them. Copy/Past is awesome! 0 issues.
By Zanster at 1:21 PM ON 06/18/09
I have the 3G and my experience was smooth as silk. The process was faster than I expected, and everything worked perfectly when it was complete.
By Wolfy at 1:40 PM ON 06/18/09
No problem... cause I don't have an iPhone! =)
By MonolithTyriss at 1:46 PM ON 06/18/09
I have an Iphone 3G. It -seemed- my 3.0 upgrade was smooth as silk. Until it was done upgrading. It came up and said that apparently, my Itunes 8.1. was too old of an 8.whatever iTunes. Funny how the requirements only mention Itunes 8. So after upgrading -iTunes-, my phone stopped being in emergencycalls-only mode and worked.
But.. I notice now that when the phone starts up, there's quite a noticeable pause between the vibration it makes and the home screen coming up. Perhaps 10-30 seconds of nothing but black. Apple.. you really messed up this time!
By Derek at 1:57 PM ON 06/18/09
The upgrade was problem-free on my iPhone 3G. Took a while though (about 15 minutes in total).
By Orphen at 2:01 PM ON 06/18/09
Don't have an iPhone, so I didn't have to upgrade anything. Problem free, really.
By SFDex at 2:06 PM ON 06/18/09
Mine went perfectly smoothly and the phone has been running well with no lags since. I immediately tried "find my iPhone" from my Mobile Me account and it worked really well, too. I'm happy with it.
By RonMan at 2:27 PM ON 06/18/09
Smooth as can be. My daughter had to wait until the servers stopped being overloaded, but my upgrade was trouble free. Her upgrade was smooth too after the server load eased.

No brick here. I used the torrent to update to 3.0 last week. Got tethering up and running yesterday. Still no MMS. Visual Voicemail broke too, thanks to the tethering hack :(
By pissed at 3:57 PM ON 06/18/09
Mine is a brick, despite upgrading my itunes. Uninstalling and reinstalling my itunes has had no effect.
I've tried many times, itunes detects that my phone needs to be restored, but then cannot restore my phone.
I never jailbroke or anything!
I'm getting pissed

So far, 1 bad, 2 jealous they don't have an iphone, and many (including me) happy 3.0 users.
By Jackal at 5:32 PM ON 06/18/09
@jimspar
pffffff, there are plenty of better phones out there other than the iPhone. Its not jealousy, its called preference not everyone has to like the iPhone.
By chief_fan at 7:03 PM ON 06/18/09
downloaded it yesterday evening, no problems. Tons better then last year when i got the 3G and had to register it
By chiaspod at 9:44 PM ON 06/18/09
@Jackal:
When you feel the need to announce that you don't have an iPhone in a thread about iPhones, that's envy.
When you do it without having even the excuse of providing more information, that's envy, not advocacy.

Failed, but recovered.
Initial update put iPhone into 'emergency call only mode' with a 'timeout connecting, check network settings' type message. The phone was recognized in iTunes, but the main window was just a white pane, with iPhone in the middle.
Followed restore instructions 'turn off, hold down home button and plug into pc - this turns on phone in recovery mode'.
My iPhone got restored to the latest firmware (3.0), and then recovered my data on top.
Took a while, and a fair amount of googling to figure out what to do. But everything is up and working now.
Rogers Canada if that helps.

Just installed 3.0 this morning and everything works great! Still haven't tested it all out, but there were no issues with the install whatsoever. The only thing I noticed were a few apps that have not yet been updated for the iPhone OS, but that's to be expected.
By Twisted Tech Geek at 10:44 AM ON 06/19/09
The first few hours I tried the activation servers were not available.. ok no problem.. will wait till i get home. It was the middle of the day and I was at work. When I got home I tried it and after the first attempt the iphone was left in recovery mode. Tried it again, or should I say a few more times and it upgraded to 3.0. It said it was activated and all that good stuff. I check out a feature or two and then realized I could not make any calls. I was on my wireless at home so I could still use the net and get email. On my way to work today I realized I had no connectivity at all. This is one out of three phones I have so it was not critical to fix it once I learned of the problem yesterday. Now that I realize I have no at&t service I am restoring it from a backup and if it does not work then I will give at&t a call.

The 3.0 update bricked my iPhone
I downloaded the 3.0 software, but couldn't install it because of the server issues. After 7+ attemps I finally got past the message and started to install the software. Half way through the install, it fails and iTunes tells me to recover my iPhone and delete all the data on it (sigh).
Now everytime I try to recover it tells some error that I can't recover, I tried over 16 times to recover, now I just have an expensive brick instead of an updated smart phone.

i think i bricked my phone..as i was restoring, pinepple screen appeared steve jobs came on with some russian words. that was it.. i cant do anything..
By AllanR at 6:14 PM ON 06/20/09
Mine appears to be a brick. Stuck on the USB plug--iTunes icon.
I received an error message on my PC. Now iTunes does not recognize that an iPhone is connected.
Thanks Apple.
By jimspar at 7:39 PM ON 06/20/09
Apparently I counted to soon, now 5 bad, 2 jealous (one whiny), and most happy. And a thank you shout out to chiaspod.
By usedrocker at 5:02 AM ON 06/21/09
My phone also bricked after the update failed; have tried to restore 3 times now. No luck. I am beyond mad about this!
By PDan at 6:49 AM ON 06/21/09
Bricked and have not got it back yet.
Needed to update itunes first
done
Upgraded to 3.0 ... almost done
Stuck on "Verifying"
Gave up after a few hours and loss of network connection.
Tried again a few times ... same pattern
Called Apple - they want $69
Writing bad software turns into a marketing opportunity for support?
I will try to fix this myself first
I will install itunes on another computer and see if I can upgrade from there
or
go to the apple store and "pitch one".
Maybe i can update on an apple there

Perfectly good iPhone now a brick after iphone 3.0 update. Reloaded iTunes didnt work. Rebooted both computer and phone several time, no luck. All I have is a iphone display showing that I need to conntect to iTunes and an iTunes app that does not recognize the iPhone, oh yes and I have a $300 useless brick, thanks Apple, I now know why I did not get rid of my Razor. Bye Apple, hope not to see you again.

Upgrade and jailbreak/unlock went fine on my 2g but some of the icons are screwed up now. Some of them have the top 1/3rd of the icon as a different app icon. Like my facebook app says facebook and has most of the regular icon but the top 3rd of it is my weather app icon. I have no idea whats happned or how to fix it. Any ideas?
By jonas at 7:41 AM ON 06/23/09

Today I try to upgrade my 1gen iphone to 3.0 OS, but it bricked up, there is a usb plug and itunes logo in the screen and nothing happen....
By Macfreak at 5:53 PM ON 06/23/09
I am another victim from Switzerland. Own a perfectly legal iPhone 3G via Swisscom, which I upgraded to iPhone 3.0 software. Forgot to update first to iTunes 8.2, so the update was done via iTunes 8.1.1.
Now I have a bricked iPhone only presenting the emergency screen in french first. Quelle Merde !
So far, I couldn't fix it...
I am pretty pissed...

My wife got a new 3G S so I took over her old iPhone 2G. The 3.0 update worked perfectly. When I activated the phone at the store it connected to iTunes and all seemed well until the required restart. It was then a brick and power off and "DFU" (hold power button and home button for 10 seconds) reset did not resolve the brick-ness. I followed the instructions posted earlier above: "Followed restore instructions 'turn off, hold down home button and plug into pc - this turns on phone in recovery mode'." The recovery in iTunes was fairly fast, and it offered to restore from my last backup. I decided to start over since I didn't really have much on the phone and figured a clean start was best. It works great now. Thanks!

looks like others have had the same experience with a bricked iphone. Like a dumba$$ i tried to get the 3.0 right before i went out on my boat for 2 weeks. Still dead. At least i have a pretty picture of a USB plug to look at for another week. Forget getting to the store. 70 mile drive and you need an appointment? no thanks. $29 for them to send me a junk refurb? thanks
By Allison at 3:07 PM ON 06/25/09
Didn't brick it but it runs slow and is unresponsive at times. :(
By zerocrossing at 8:51 PM ON 06/25/09
Got my first gen iPhone day one and updated it with no issues at all. I can tell it's probably the last OS that'll run OK on it though. Of course Apple would want me to upgrade. You think Kidney transplants are cheap? ;) Get well Steve.
By marbarrr at 6:07 AM ON 06/29/09
It's bricked.
Yayyyyyyyyy!

Brand new 32GB iPhone 3GS. Synced and backed up my iPhone 3G. Plugged in my new 32GB iPhone 3GS, Synced it up, and the sync blew away some of my OEM apps like the CAMERA! Gone!
So I decided to do a restore on the new 32GB iPhone 3GS. That's when iTunes 8.2 bricked it. Same deal - USB plug-in picture.
iTunes just sees an iPhone that needs to be restored - and goes throguh all the motions, then fails after about 15 minutes. Tried four times, on two different computers, and also with a new account - followed all the Apple suggested troubleshooting.
3.0 restore will brick even a new iPhone 3GS only hours out of the box.

I am in Hong kong and it bricked my iphone as well. nothing I can do to unbrick it~!!!
By Grant at 9:39 AM ON 07/03/09
Im Bricked! Wont recognize my iphone, says I need to install itunes 8.2 which I have done several times. Have tried restoring several times doesnt work. As a longtime Apple junkie, I am surprised by the amount of bricks Ive read about and more surprised that apple hasn't done anything about it. I have a Powerbook g4 with 2nd Gen Iphone and I am one frustrated customer right now. Did anyone find a fix or have any idea when one will be available?
By JWT at 1:15 PM ON 07/04/09
Okay. Here is the fix for a bricked iphone.
Symptoms: Iphone never completes the upgrade to 3.0. My phone stuck and the verifiying the install screen. Tried to restore to previous backup, but also a no go. Still bricked.
I calle Apple tech support. It seems that a registry entry that was added by a wireless data card (Could be from a wireless card also).
BACK UP REGISTRY FIRST! Better to be safe than sorry.
The entry resides at the HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Tcpip/Parameters. The Entry "TcpWindowSize" needes to be deleted. Reboot and Waaalaaaah! Back in business.

First gen, jail broken. iTunes 8.2, did update which of course bricked the phone and then ran Dev-Team, phone fine but it does run rather slowly as others have mentioned. Overall, happy. FYI Jail Broken because I am not in the US
