Taiwanese stadium is 100% solar-powered

Taiwanese stadium is 100% solar-powered

Taiwan's new solar stadium is absolutely incredible. Not only does it look downright-beautiful, but it's a marvel of eco-engineering: it's 100% solar powered.

The 50,000 seat arena is covered in 8,844 solar panels that'll provide lighting for the track and field with 3,300 lux. That's a lot of juice that won't need to be generated from environmentally-damaging ways. Hopefully we'll see more and more stadiums and other structures built this way in the near future.

My neighbor has these solar powered lights that light up his walkway at night. Actually they really don't light it up, they simply light up a small LED so he can see where the lights are and thus his side walk. They only lasted about three months before the solar cells burned out.

I'm all for solar power, but before they start patting themselves on the back for a "LOOK AT ME" award, lets see a photo at night. Love to know what the price tag of that stadium is.

Well Shaithis having not seen the actual plans for the stadium I cannot be 100% on this but I am pretty sure they didn't use the same solar lights as your neighbor. As for the patting on the back, its a pretty good precident that they even got it built, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step....so stop hoping they stumble.

While the design is neat and creative, i am also not sure if the solar panels should be covering it completely. The reason why is that the panels aren't exactly very tough.

Even if the solar panels don't work, it's a stunning piece of work. Toyo Ito is the architect.

This solar stadium looks fantastic.I am sure more and more projects like this will show up in the next couple years.

I was wondering how much does this solar stadium cost?

By jul at 3:56 AM ON 05/21/09

Why not, it's a beautyfull piece off architecture... But : will it work during cloudy monthes ? will it work in winter when sun exposition is shorter ?
And don't forget that this system must be combined with batteries so as to store the electricity produced during the day and give it back at night when needed. As far as I know, these stuffs contains loads of poluting materials :-(

Look at the video at and a compete story at .
There are athletes performing stunts on the panels...there is some good technology happening here.
It seems to me that they are putting the electricity into the grid, not batteries. To disclaim the system because it uses plastics and other materials is not a valid argument.
Respect!
