Samsung micro-shutter could mean salvation for awful cellphone cameras

Almost every cellphone in the world has a camera inside, but most of them stink. Samsung has a better idea, shrinking an entire iris-style mechanism into a 2mm-wide micro-shutter that's small enough to fit inside the tiniest cellphones. Instead of just momentarily activating the sensor and scanning the scene like blurry cellphone cameras do, this one snaps open and shut like a real camera.

Samsung's not saying when we might see this tech showing up in cellphones or tinycams, but could this be a sneak preview of another component of the upcoming iPhone? Hoping to see this on board this year's cellphones might be overly optimistic, but it sure would be nice to always have an acceptable camera on board an outlandishly small cellphone.

Nitpicking comment from a photographer:

Irises don't snap open and shut. That's what the shutter does. The iris merely closes to varying degrees to limit the amount of light the sensor receives...

But still, it would be great if this technology is ever implemented. Perhaps micro auto-focus is next I hope?

mobile cameras already have auto focus sony carl zeis auto focus u ignorant fools shutters are a wast of time when you have a RR ratio the size of a knats bollock that means prespective is distorted making your nose bigger than your face when you have a small sensor bunch of idiots

you cannot take good photos with conventional mobile cameras due to the sensor size being too small to correct this problem you need to interleve images multiple small cameras say 6 with a space of at least 10 mm apart thus acting like compound lens this corrects the prespective distorted images and means u can reduce noise using acute FFT letting you use a higher iso anf faster one pass cmos scan
