MIT's net-enabled EyeStop brings bus stops and routes into the 21st Century

MIT\'s net-enabled EyeStop brings bus stops and routes into the 21st Century

If all bus stops were "EyeStops," then you'd be able to do a lot more than just sit and wait. The solar-powered kiosks, designed by MIT's SENSEable City Lab, are equipped with touchscreens that'll show you everything from the bus schedule to the shortest route for your trip. That's pretty much all you need to know at a bus stop, right? Apparently not.

The EyeStop also lets you check the air quality, browse the web, see exactly where the bus you're waiting for is, interact with your mobile device and — my favorite feature — use the EyeStop as a community message board where you can post ads and announcements.

On top of that, it looks pretty darn slick for a bus stop. MIT announced the concept at the Genio Fiorentino festival in Florence, Italy, with a working prototype scheduled for October.

I have thought of this like ages ago, this is wonderful, the checking of email would be crazy, especially at night, but this perfect, they need the same system for all transit, especially trains

That thing would be pertty cool for the five minutes it's in opperation before it gets vandalized.

This is a nice concept, but don't get wild. Email? Surfing the net? Totally pointless. People should have internet in buses (and trains) not on bus stops. As far as the idea for maps, shortest root to your destination and similar usefull stuff goes, i'm all for it :)

I agree. Allow web browsing on this thing and no one else can get the info they need because some douche will be watching porn on it.

ugh...there are so many other problems in the world that need to be solved...why waste money on this BS when it will just get abused by the public and need to be replaced once a week
