Dutch \'Canna Chopper\' sniffs out cannabis fields from the air

Like a drug-hunting K9 with wings, the "Canna Chopper" is the Dutch police force's latest addition to its weed-fighting arsenal (which must be impressive, considering that it's adding a high-tech miniature helicopter). The unmanned craft is loaded with odor and video detection instruments so that it can identify fields of hemp from the air, and then call in backup to make the bust.

On its maiden voyage it managed to locate a cannabis farm and officers arrested seven growers and recovered several kilos of the outlawed weed. Now all it needs is a gun attached to its underside and it could make its own arrests.

According to the Dutch Daily News, only 10% of cannabis grown in farms in the Netherlands is sold legally in the country, with the rest being smuggled away and sold in illegal foreign markets.

Hopefully they don't bring this to Canada

I forsee this thing getting shot out of the sky.

@MODF : It's illegal to carry a gun in the netherlands ;-) But you cán grow your own weed if you stick to 5 plants. This chopper is obviously looking for houses converted to professional growing plantages, that most of the time also split their power lines before the meter and so stealing the power, and killing the electricity grid in the next block in the process.

> split their power lines before the meter / killing the electricity grid

One of the untended consequences of prohibition. Let people use the sun just like plants are supposed to grow.!

Is this operated by remote control? Most radio frequency devices don't have that far of a range, meaning someone would have to be operating it. It just doesn't seem very practical, unless you're trying to spot plants in high places or mountain slopes.

That low to the ground, it also feels sort of like trespassing if you are flying around over private property. I would be pretty pissed if surveillance drones were flying over my place, even if they were just going past on the way to snoop somewhere else.

I'd imagine its controlled w/ the same high end radio equipment ppl use for fpv flight. That has some good range.

And yes, its trespassing. In every sense of the word. The only reason they can fly helicopters over your land searching your property here in America is because the founding fathers never envisioned air travel for the purpose of surveillance. The only reason they can even prohibit weed is because people have forgotten that the federal government has limited powers, and that you're not allowed to break every single constitutionally guaranteed right in a row. Lol.

But who needs self ownership when you've got the illusion of safety? hehe.

Looks like the dutch farmers need to build them one of these...

or one of these...

Thats a rc helicopter with an aa-12 machine shotgun attached to it :D I think that would take care of the dutch police' spy bots pretty well. Or just a couple of .22s if you're cheap (volley fire so its easier to hit, and they're super light once you drop the stock and all that).

It uses GPS.... just place an 'expensive' GPS jammer and your done...

this device is to find small low-tech crops... high-tech crops will not have this problem.

That thing has flown over my area 2 times now (amsterdam) and it has not found my location.

I use anti-infrared foil so unseen and i have huge filtering system and a GPS jammer since 3 weeks now.

Law Enforcement, eat shit!
