We love steampunk style here at Dvice, but normally the only way to own something this cool is to make it yourself.
This gorgeous creation called Telecalculograph Mk II was created by steampunk artist Jake Hildebrandt using a cutting edge PC, and is being given away to promote the new steampunk game Damnation. All they're asking you to do is create some kind of video, picture, or art installation that shows your love of steampunk.

That is truly a thing of beauty.
By draper at 4:44 PM ON 05/23/09
wow this steam punk thing has gotten out of control. its just another avenue for ppl who dont think they belong in society to act out no different than goth or emo. instead of going out and acting out in fairy makebelieve land go find something truely productive.
By Random Hero at 5:24 PM ON 05/23/09
^^^^ WTF are you talking about! Steampunk is an art form, fusing old/victorian and new technology, not something as lame as an emo kid acting out against society. I think you need to put to crack pipe down and get out of the house once in while. I honestly feel sorry for you and everyone who has to be around you if your way of thinking is always this narrow and shallow. I swear, some peoples retarded kids.
By Buddy Love at 5:30 PM ON 05/23/09
No, draper is right. Steampunk is pathetic. It's definitely NOT 'art'. Ooh, you put bronze piping and wood panels on a computer! Good job! *sigh*
By jmbamboo at 5:50 PM ON 05/23/09
Ooh, you put colored paint on a canvas, Ooh, you melted some bronze and poured it in a mold. I'll place "Steampunk" above much modern art. This is one of the better examples.

I had no idea steampunk was a huge craze, you sure can't tell by how little traffic megachan's /ste/ board gets. Handful of people who like the style, yeah. Anyhow. I like it; the feel, the look. I also pay the bills and fund my hobbies playing with hand fabricated machinery, calibrating control systems, and designing electronic circuits... the whole steampunk/dieselpunk/Rube Goldberg fascination is why I got into the field I have, and looking at it reminds me of being a kid again.
Anyone who wants to critique the style of an inanimate object and ascribe it personality qualities based on their subjective (and erroneous) interpretation of the social groups they associate it with is a fool. I'm not emo, artist, or unproductive. I daresay I exercise more daily creativity in delivering custom solutions to real world problems than anyone who will read this post. Narrowminded fools not fit to clean my boots should keep their opinions to themselves... what are you doing on the scifi channel's site, anyway?? LOL.
By chokeyourself at 6:40 PM ON 05/23/09
To all the troll's that knock anything creative: Get a life, a job and maybe a girlfriend/wife. That is, if you can get your head out of your arse.
By daleicious at 7:13 PM ON 05/23/09
draper: Please enlighten us with an illustration of what you have done recently that was artistic. Perhaps you could be spending your time productively learning the English language, "truly".
Buddy Love: Do enlighten us plebeians with your refined definition of 'art'. Any art critic that starts a sentence with "this is definitely NOT art" has no clue what the word 'art' means.
This is a gorgeous piece that deserves better consideration than the worthless tripe posted by these individuals.
Jack, Random Hero, mekkis, chokeyourself, jmbamboo... thanks for posting your considered opinions. You rock.

Draper and buddy love sound like the kind of people who iron creasese in their jeans, lol.
this is the best kind of modern art, both creative and functional. A lot of love was put into this creation.
By Juiced at 9:57 PM ON 05/23/09
This is Modern/Vintage art at its finest function and style it could almost be used as a center piece in my opinion.
To those who mock this as "Not Art" need to think about how much time and effort went into this piece.
To Dale and all others who left positive comments on this "Amazing" piece of art.
You are the true visionaries of our time and i thank you personally.
By Gorastus at 11:24 PM ON 05/23/09
Steampunk crap is G-A-Y!!! Get off it DVice! What the heck is the matter with you people? Some unrealized gay childhood fantasy? Please. Move on.
By mcborge at 8:03 AM ON 05/24/09
Gorastus, WTF are you prattling on about. sounds to me you have gayness on the brain. Get out of your closet and get a life ya braindead nerk.
By Pale.Nimbus at 10:13 AM ON 05/24/09
It's beautiful, even from a wood work standpoint I wish we saw more modern art like this. It looks like something out of an anime film. It's amazing very nice work in spite of what some of these posters have to say. Keep it up I would love to see some more work like this!
By KDRAMNZ at 5:05 PM ON 05/24/09
Art is in the eye of the beholder... my self i value usefullness over looks but if someone can make it look better then good on them. this proves that there is some imaganation left in the world
By at 6:39 PM ON 05/24/09

By steampuke at 6:40 PM ON 05/24/09
lol an art form? wow. like buddy love said wood panneling and bronze piping isnt art its just modification its pathetic stuff like this that makes our society go down. people dressingup in post apocalypticvictorian style clothing and pretending. lol its actually funny and pathetic the people looked on the g4 special. like draper said its just another way for people to get away from reality like emo and goth.
By dexter at 7:11 PM ON 05/24/09
steampunk is beautiful and functional too . you can rant all you want , but these machines are built with love and craftmanship way beyond the level of the current consumer idiots . those who can't replace a battery in their remote cry about creativity ? I wish my computer would look this clean and perfect - self made watercooling , noise insulation - but giving it such a nice box would definitely make me proud .

By oneeyederic at 5:09 PM ON 05/26/09
the steampunk movement is much bigger than just the tech world. steampunk housewares and especially jewelry are huge right now.
i don't think the steampunk cares if you think its awesome or not, its made a genre out of itself and people either enjoy it or they don't.
but the posts above i don't understand. you might as well bad mouth a color or writing style. and so you don't appreciate the form, but what have you done to capture anyones attention?
By j at 10:06 PM ON 05/27/09
hey mekkis, I spend my time in the world coming up with real "working" solutions to technology related problems after someone else tried a creative solution. so lick my boots
By burneggroll at 9:01 AM ON 05/28/09
Only real are evokes emotion. I don't know if I like it. But, I would rather have it than a blank box.
By Mushugai at 12:40 PM ON 05/28/09
For all of you who have negative comments, what do you do that is so productive and awe inspiring? Are you famous musicians? Is your paintings in a museum? Your the ones that wasted your time coming to this page and went out of your way to comment your "opinion". Personally, if you dont like it, then dont put energy into a response. And if you think it really needs to be critiqued, then be constructive. Seriously, anyone that would try to make this would instantly gain respect for how much time and effort went into it. If you dont like the way it looks, you can at least respect the work that has gone into it. Just the other day I saw a giant styrofoam ball hanging in a museum with old and new action figures glued to it. Yes, in a museum...
By NMP at 1:10 PM ON 05/28/09
1) one doesn't have to have produced something "productive and awe inspiring" to have a comment or opinion. I am not a chicken, but I know and egg when I see one.
2) throwing stones/glass houses - that's all I'm saying.
3) The thing looks cool and I want it.
4) Why knock whatever style someone has ascribed to for ANY reason? Do you feel better now than when someone slammed you for your lack of taste? What, am I supposed to dress like a North Korean factory worker? All function, no fun?
5) The thing looks cool and I want it.
Wow - I got all I needed from the top of this scroll. Now I've wasted time on a pointless argument, and been dragged into it. Last time I scroll down on one of these.

we are inspired

Beautiful worksmanship
Nice Design
I am curious however if the creator went the final distance and made the dials work? (I.E. Switch them for electric dials and have them read cpu temp etc..)
By GR at 6:34 PM ON 05/28/09
I am with Gor, Your entire post was first thing I thought of!
By Eyeroll at 10:37 AM ON 05/29/09
Wow... so many people throwing their view of what ISN'T art. Art is expression people... a way to convey emotion, provoke thought or whatever the person wants it to mean. In fact, art isn't required to MEAN anything... learn what Dada is or look back at your comic books. Pointless indeed but fun to look at all the same (which oddly enough is the point of art!).
Steampunk is a new form of art and modification which combines several skills. Woodworking... brazing... searching like mad for proper looking pieces to incorporate, knowing wtf you're basing the piece off of etc. Claiming that it is an escape from reality is true but not in the back country hick rendition some of you seem to share. Everything is an escape... why are you browsing forums? Because you're bored... an escape. Saying that a genre of art is used as a social barrier to help rejects fit in only points out the accuser's own insecurities and ignorance.
To summarize... if you don't like it, nobody cares. Not everybody likes all art, you don't like steampunk and I don't like your Yosemite Sam mud flaps. To each their own...

I've just noticed that the Museum of History and Science at Oxford University in England is mounting a MAJOR Steampunk art exhibition this fall.
I guess this soundly puts an end to the debate of, "Is Steampunk really an art form?".
