400-disc Blu-ray changer might be a bit of overkill

400-disc Blu-ray changer might be a bit of overkill

While storing hundreds of movies digitally isn't too tough if you have a large enough hard drive, storing that many on discs for easy viewing is a much less practical thing to do. But hey, if you're completely resistant to the inevitable march of progress, Sony is more than willing to take your money.

That's why they're offering up a ridiculous 400-disc Blu-ray changer. Yes, 400 discs. That's at least $10,000 worth of movies, so you know this one isn't aimed at your average consumer. Look for it to cost a good deal more than $2,000 when it's eventually released.

Why not just use a PC and do it all digitally?

I don't see why this would be so expensive other than demand. I have a 400disk Sony DVD player that I paid 400 for a few years back.

Add the word blueray and it instantly means 3-4x the price?

That is 2 Teras of storage if the disk are double layed

I'd buy one... would be better than keeping a collection on a shelf.

With all of the formats and options that they're cramming into players these days, you'd think they could add one that has been overlooked... CG+G. There ar a lot of home Karaoke buffs who'd like to elininate having to connect one more thing (i.e., a karaoke player) onto their elaborate AV set-ups. It may even be possible to add the sofware to existing multiformat player/recorder units.

It's humorous to listen to people talk about the "media player revolution" like it's either already in place OR just aournd the corner. Truth is, many BD"s ARE already pushing 50 gigs with the film and extras, so a 400 disc library would easily pass 15 TB's worth of storage...go price that kind of HDD space (not too mention a media streamer) out in the next 6 months and get back to me. Further, "ripped" BD's on a media playerr STILL don't offer ISO's (menu's) and decent player functionality (FF RW, chapters, etc)- really a 75% solution for most.
Last...who the hell wants to rip 200+ BD's and back them up? MUCH easier said than done.

This is an EXTREMELY viable solution for those looking to plug and play and be done.
The media player revolution will have to wait a bit yet for the vast majority of consumers, I'm afraid.

Why doesn't anyone make a blu-ray / DVD / CD player that handles just 3 to 5 discs, at a reasonable price? I don't mind getting out of my chair once every 2 hours to put in a new movie, but if I have friends over it would be nice to be able to put in a handful of CDs for an evening of music. 400 is, as the article says, overkill.
