The Social Security card is one of those objects that's about as low-tech as they come. It's a card with a number on it. That's it. But what if we wanted to give it an update for the 21st century? FrogDesign came up with an idea for just that.
The Troika is a concept Social Security card that offers some pretty big improvements over what we've got now. There's a thumbprint reader, buttons that change the screen from SS to Driver's License to Passport so you only need to carry one card around, a protective rim and an aluminum body. Seems a bit fancier than the current model, no? Just hope it doesn't get wet, otherwise you're screwed.

Actually, the thing looks like it's sealed with the protective rim, so I'd imagine it could survive quite a few dunkings.

I think that #1 is a biometric scanner. Or it could be one, in that case, it makes it a lot harder to steal or to use someone else's ID. If that's the case, where do I get one?

Why not include the debit-card function, plus an RFID chip that reports to Washington whenever you enter a public building and a GPS receiver-recorder that remembers your movements for the last few hours? All legal visitors and immigrants would get temporary cards, so anyone who can't produce a valid card can be considered an Unperson, and disposed of summarily. Presto! No more crime!
