Glass speakers look nice, may not sound as nice

Glass speakers look nice, may not sound as nice

If you care more about how your speakers look than how they sound, Kenwood's new SP0001 speakers were designed with you in mind. These bad boys look pretty amazing thanks to being housed in glass, looking completely unlike any speakers we've seen before.

Unfortunately, they offer a paltry 10Wx2 channels, so they probably don't sound that great. Oh, and they also cost a whopping $1,000, which seems like a lot to pay for underpowered speakers. But hey, maybe you just want them so people will think you're a huge music fan, when you actually aren't. Cool?

It amazes me that people that profess to know what they are talking about equate sound quality with POWER! 10 watts is more than sufficient to fill a room with sound at a comfortable listening level with quality speakers. Sound quality is measured by specs such as distortion and frequency response.

The speakers may in fact not need any power at all. The 10W rating simply means that the speakers can only handle 10W, not necessarily that they need 10W.
Also, if these are the first speakers made in a solid glass casing such as this, it may be surprising to hear them. They may sound differently than any other speaker because of the glass. I certainly wouldn't pay $1,000 for any pair of speakers, but it might not be as bad as your first impression.
