The Third Coming of the iPhone is forthcoming, and along the way eagle-eyed fanboys are spotting clues in its developer's code pointing to innovations that may lie within.
We found a quartet of enticing possibilities — rumors all, so don't make any steadfast plans involving any of this — but that only makes this scuttlebutt slightly less enticing:
1. 3.2-megapixel camera. Market sources say Apple's ordering up boatloads of the sensors, bigger than the paltry 2-megapixel sensors populating today's iPhones.
2. FM transmission and receiving. Not only could you listen to FM radio, you could transmit whatever your iPhone outputs to any car radio.
3. Video editing. Hidden in the beta version of iPhone OS 3.0 are scrubbing and clip features, telltale signs of video editing facilities.
4. Faster Wireless-N Wi-Fi. The upcoming iPhone's radio specs support 802.11n, much faster and more powerful than the wireless-G (802.11g) Wi-Fi in the iPhone 3G.

Yea... FM isn't happening.
By andrew at 6:45 PM ON 04/06/09
seems like this is all bs rumor again
By kizer at 7:27 PM ON 04/06/09
They didn't mention you could use it for a door stop too. Man what gives
By Geekazine at 8:30 AM ON 04/07/09
I understand about the transmit function, but I would highly doubt about the receiver. It would be cool though if they could stuff in a HD Radio...

The new iPhone will not doubt sell like hotcakes, but hopefully the coming update to the OS will happen soon.
Whatever the updates it includes, I only hope they have it out before the coming Comicon in San Diego. the iPhone can get the biggest buzz at this event since more gadget and scifi fans will be running around rampant.
I also hear that there will be free wifi at the San Diego Convention Center during the event.
Apple will grow their fan base extensively if they get the update out in time.

Sounds like a laundry wish list to me.
By Matt at 6:47 PM ON 04/07/09
I heard they'll be handing out free nozzles for every douche bag in San Diego.

Hmmm, sounds good, but I am still on the sidelines about the iPhone.
I have always been an Apple "fanboy," since the daze of the Apple II--my studio went fully digital in '88.
These are the main concerns I keep hearing from my iPhone hugging peers:
--Battery life sucks big time
--Dropped and low-quality calls ALL the time in SF/Bay Area.
I just went month-to-month on Verizon, and was ready to make the jump to AT&T (whom I have hated from past experiences) and iPhone.
Had the iphone been on Verizon from the get-go I would have been one of those coughing up $500 for v01. Guess I will hang a bit longer with Verizon until this shakes out.
In short--any word on the sucky battery life with this new phone?

"The FM-Free iPhone"
"The NAB Board meeting in Washington this week has FM on cellphones as a big agenda item. Too bad the NAB and most radio CEOs do not understand Apple CEO Steve Jobs' thinking in continuing to exclude FM radio from the increasingly popular iPhone... Of course there are technological issues that keep Apple from readily including FM on iPhones not the least of which is the fact that U.S. FM is not compatible in parts of Asia and Europe where different standards exist... Remember when the HD advocates ballyhooed the HD docking capability to use iTunes for music purchases. Hold that image. No one else can picture it -- especially the marketplace. Tagging got tagged out at home plate. What radio doesn't get -- and apparently isn't in the mood to see -- is that you can't cram a radio into a smart phone and expect an entire generation to use it like a Walkman."
The FM-tuner code is an old silly rumor, probably stolked by the HD Radio Allliance.

If uncle Steve disappoints us again with only 3.2mp camera, after all the market leading brands have released 8mp and HD recording already, let alone 5mp - I say people should start petition for Jobs stepping down as Apple's CEO, because there is no excuse for such brutal ignorance of one the market's highest in demand features. And if Bluetooth A2DP is *STILL* not there, for the device that feaures best iPod on the planet - he simply deserves to be shot
By heyrkstar at 9:29 PM ON 04/07/09
I would love all the features, but I dont like how thin it is. Its hard enough already , holding on to the new ipod touch. I like the iphone the way it is now.
By EIC at 5:36 PM ON 04/08/09
Yawn this is a BS and horrible PShop. No headphone jack? (cant use bluetooth unless you want music only in one ear) No usb/charge port?.... It also cant be an itouch since the top has output caller mic for when you hold it against your face.
More Speculative Fodder.

How about supporting MMS? It would be nice to be able to snap a picture and send it in a text message..
By rudylyn1 at 8:37 AM ON 04/09/09
I wish iPhone was available at Verizon since AT&T really sucks.
By wgfinley at 8:37 AM ON 04/09/09
@AppleEarlyAdopter - Verizon is CDMA, having the iPhone there was never an option as Apple wanted to go worldwide, that means GSM (I have preferred CDMA service myself).
As far as these features, hogwash on FM transmitter, no way. The accessories vendors would go insane.
By nulldevice at 8:42 AM ON 04/09/09
@vuvavoom - they've already announced MMS support in the next OS upgrade, so existing iPhones'll have it.
By Ninram at 11:02 AM ON 04/09/09
@EIC - OS 3.0 will support A2DP for stereo quality audio over bluetooth. There are many two-ear bluetooth headsets on the market.

What about speaking GPS? is it so hard to add voice to the already existing application?
By Twilight at 11:33 AM ON 04/09/09
iPhone is GSM while Verizon is CDMA (only AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM in the US). Incompatibility is what you get when the US insists on going with its own "standards" (while the rest of the world went GSM). Since GSM was made available in the US (Cingular/AT&T), I've refused to use any non-GSM service so I'm happy Apple went GSM (then again, I don't have an iPhone yet as I don't need most of the features).
Better camera as one of the most demanded features? I doubt that. There is still a large market for cell phones without any camera (unfortunately the options for such keep getting fewer and fewer in the US). I'm a big fan of single purpose devices (I have my phone, my camera, and my iPod). The biggest draw for me of the iPhone is the PDA functionality (which I could also get from a Blackberry (which I also don't have)).

I work in customer service for a call center taking calls for AT&T. I like my job, but I honestly wish I was working for Verizon because I use Verizon and wouldn't use AT&T unless they were the very last provider. The sheer amounts of complaints that people have about their phones, SIM issues, and calling in saying that they either can't make or rec calls or can't send or rec text. Good Lord, with Verizon I just don't have those kinds of problems and don't know of anyone who has!
As far as the iPhones go, even if Apple puts out MMS capability in the software updates, it still won't work until AT&T gives it a go. Customers are calling in trying to get us to tweak settings to allow it, but it's not currently possible and we can't change provisioning to try and MAKE it work because it's just not in working order between the two companies yet. But I'm like some of you...if Verizon gets the iPhone, I might get one...otherwise, fat chance.
By nzjade at 4:48 PM ON 04/11/09
... until the iphone has full 3G capability ie. video calling to other 3G phones like in NZ ... it's just another phone with a bell and no whistle ...
By radiko at 10:34 PM ON 04/19/09
APPLE, are you listening?
Do you guys even read the comments on this post?
Needs a much, much longer battery life.
Needs internal GPS.
Needs a USB port and a decent audio phone jack plug-in.
If you did this, I would drop my 120 GB Zune and instead, go out and plop down a few hundred bucks in hard cash, and buy your Apple product, regardless what telecom carries or supports it.
Also, just a little brainstorming here: No reason why there can't be an accessory that charges up your mobile device with a pocket photovoltaic panel. For example, a little rectangular, high-efficiency SOLAR PANEL could neatly SNAP onto the unused or rarely-accessed BACK of the i-Phone or your cellphone.
I know they exist, but the ones I've seen so far look ugly, don't look like they match up to your device design-wise, and unless you like lugging around a backpack outfitted with a panel just for powering up your mobile device may make you look like a hiker but looks awkward and amateurishly nerdy if you work in a suit-and-tie office.
And the blockish, foldable solar panel rechargers don't exactly fit into your pants or coat pockets, forcing you to lug around a carrying case just for it..
Regardless, rechargeable power by any ambient light or sunlight... what a profitable, green, high tech concept for consumers everywhere, eh?

it will be so advanced it can actually "copy and paste"!

seriously!!!!!! verizon better not come out with the iphone... does any one know what Verizon's early termination fee is for all of there touch screens? ITs $350!!!!!! disappointing, the best decision would be staying with AT&T. just invest in the network and everyones happy.
