China embraces green energy future, unveils electric-powered SUV

Because of a somewhat depressed auto market the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show offered few surprises, but one bright spot was the hybrid concept vehicle unveiled by Chinese manufacturer Chang'An.

Dubbed the E301, the concept vehicle looks like a cross between a next-gen mini-SUV and an updated Delorean DMC-12 (aka the Back To The Future car) due to its futurist gull-wing doors. The car is billed as an electric vehicle, and while it looks contemporary enough to roll off the assembly line into real cities no release date has been announced. Check out more views of the E301 after the jump.

Wow, finally some futuristic concept I actually like!

If it would come to Europe in the next 10 years I'd seriously think about buying it. (not looking at the cost).

This is just the thing we need right now. Not some the same boring conventional design but something new and exciting. All American auto companies could take a page from their book. I think kia has already done it with there new car the Soul http://www.kia.ca/cars/details/soul?gclid=CN7wqc6PkZoCFQEeDQodTGp5Fg

@ maran: like you I really hope that this gets developed just the way it is, but if the Chinese auto makers are anything like american they'll butcher this to look like another mundane driver.

@JP: Please tell me you're joking, the soul looks just like the honda element and the Scion (Toyota) xB and xD. but you are right, we need more futuristic like cars built if we're ever to get away from the current trend.

If the production model looks anything like this I'd so buy it and import it to the US. As long as they kept the gull wing doors (I love the DMC-12)

Does anyone remember the Ark Roamer from the old Ark II tv show?

GM had doors like that on their Aerovette concept way back when. I'm not sure I like the idea of FOLDING doors in the event of an impact. At least normal gullwings are solid....

And if the glaciers hadn't retreated they would still be reflecting sunlight and cooling the Earth so that there is not enough vater vapor to sustain them and we wouldn't be carbon-phobic and building unsustainable electric vehicles.

I like it. It looks even better than the Hyundai’s Nuvis Concept SUV with gull-wing doors unveiled in New York this month. http://puregreencars.com/auto-shows/new-york-auto-show/hyundai_nuvis_concept_debuts_at_new_york_auto_show.html

Yeah, like anyone would ever buy an electric SUV.
