You remember the sporty Toyota MR2 roadster that died in 2007? That low-slung mid-engined two-seater will be reincarnated as a compact coupe with hybrid Toyota Prius innards. It'll pack sprightly performance into its lithe frame, with a 0-60 time of seven seconds, while emitting very little CO2 and getting a stingy 60mpg.
Sporty drivers will like its rear-wheel drive and paddle shifters, and its projected price ain't bad, either — ringing the register at about the same price as the Prius, around $24,000 before you start slathering on all the techno-extras. Electro-gas hybrid, sporty and relatively cheap (well, compared to the $109K Tesla Roadster)? Want.

Very interesting. I sure hope they don't give it a lame name like "Syfy."

I have a hard time getting excited about this because the chances that the actual car looks this good are really small. If the actual car looked like that and performed close to the listed specs, I would definitely look at getting one, but it will probably not be even close.

To compare this vehicle with the Tesla is absolutely absurd. The Tesla is a high-performance, ALL ELECTRIC vehicle. This Toyota is merely a compact coupe with the mechanicals of a Toyota Prius HYBRID.
Even if they had the same cost, I would take the Tesla, thank you.

It's about time someone considered making a sporty HYBRID. I've only been wanting one ever sense the Prius. I've been asking why not build one for years and I'm always told no one will buy it, because the people that want 60 mpg aren't the same people that want a sporty car.

they'll do the same to this as they did the Chevy volt, another mundane driver car to help save the environment, though it won't even do that. I wish car companies would stop releasing their prototype designs, all that happens in the end is our dreams are crushed.

Yeah! Bring it on.
Toyota give me this:
150HP electric motor + 150HP Gasoline engine. With enough battery life for 10 minutes @ 150HP.
50MPG + 0-60 in 5.2. Who says Hybrid power is boring!
Honda Civic Hybrid Type R anyone?

I am waiting for a mid sized sedan that is comfortable , stylish , and quiet like the new Ford Taurus . I want it powered by an inline four cylinder engine with a five to six hundred cubic centimeter displacement producing fifty to sixty horsepower and a fifty horsepower electric motor .
I don't want any batteries to store the electrical energy , I want that power stored in super capacitors which will give me fast acceleration to highway speed , for passing , and going up steep grades .
The capacitors will also capture all the regenerative power that is generated when I am slowing down . I don't want to have a plug-in vehicle as it is not convenient for me and thousands of others like me , Thank You

I should add that I want it assembled as a Series Hybrid as I wont want to buy it if it is assembled as a parallel hybrid .
I don't see any logical reason to pay all that extra cost for the unnecessary hardware and mechanical pieces that go into a parallel hybrid vehicle .

Toyota can be fairly accurate in their concept to production, and this is already a toned down version of a concept car, the FT-HS. That said, bring it on, I like it.

@ F AT: Of COURSE if the Tesla and the MR2 cost the same, I would take
the Tesla - but the reality is that they do NOT; and so I will take the MR2.
P.S.: Looks like you work at Tesla Motors.

Dealer's mark up on the old MR2 was excessive. I was interested til I found out how much the dealer marked up and also one dealer I went to had a preowned one with a lot of modifications to the suspension and stuff they wanted MSRP for a new one for that car, a USED car. Toyota fehhh underpowered and sometimes overpriced vehicles I guess. I test drove a Celica and the interior was pretty and all but GOD THE CAR IS A SLOW PILE OF CRAP!!!! LOL
So yeah I own a mustang GT now. LOL! Buy american. oh and one last thing, my bug would outrun the celica and it is over 40 years old.
