How do you grab attention for your upcoming straight-to-DVD animated film? Say stuff like "1,500-foot-long armored zeppelins" and "steam-powered battle tripods." Oh, and "sex in the cockpit" probably didn't hurt, either.
War of the Worlds: Goliath promises all of that and more, according to a rough synopsis on the Heavy Metal Magazine Fan Page by director Joe Pearson:
It's an R-rated, retro-history, [1914 steampunk epic], fourteen years after the first failed Martian invasion. Mankind has rebuilt her cities and [the military is] adapting a lot of the abandoned Martian technology Think of "Band of Brothers" meets "Star Wars" It will be cool, steam-powered battle tripods, doomed Cossack cavalry charges, Victorian deco, steampunk Manhattan, 1,500-foot-long armored battle zeppelins, Teddy Roosevelt, souped up tri-planes, blood on steaming metal, sex in the cockpit. The usual It will have a budget of around $3 million, and be produced by Tripod Entertainment and is being co-produced by Kevin Eastman (owner of Heavy Metal).Awesome steampunk robots? It's almost as if they've been reading DVICE. Goliath is scheduled for an early 2010 release, but, until then, feast your eyes on the awesome concept art below.

Hmmmmm, interesting. I see bits of Last Exile, Fifth Element and Patlabor in there. But $3 million dollars for this? I say more like 15 to 25 million to make it right. And I would show it on the coasts during the end of the year to buck for an Oscar nod. Just to see how the industry will react. Couldn't hurt. Look what happened at that Slumdog movie.

Dear Kevin,
Joe Pearson here. I'm producing and directing on WOTW:Goliath.
Thanks for the enthusiastic response and interest. You ARE our target audience Kevin, and if we do our job making a kick ass film, you guys are the ones that will make or break us by buying or not buying the finished product.
And I'm gratified to see the particular reaction to the "sex in the cockpit" line. It's exactly what I wanted to elicit as we're going for a medium R Rating in our piece. Not exactly Underground, but definately not a PG or PG 13 Marvel Video, if you know what I mean.
And it will be TASTEFUL sex. Heh.
And what till you see our zeppelin. Oh baby.
We're opening up a site on the Heavy Metal magazine website (www.heavymetal.com) in a couple of weeks. It will feature a lot more pix, bios and info on the production, including an ongoing blog by yours truly with lots of art and photos (of course some might not consider THAT a plus).
Keep in touch, and if there's any questions I can answer on the production, let me know and I'll do my best.
Regards,
Joe Pearson

PS To "Angryoldman".
Thanks for the kind words as well. And yes, we SHOULD have a fifteen million dollar budget, but truthfully, I'm thankful to have even THREE million and no studio suits interfering in what we want to do.
Believe me, I came out of TV and video animation and three million USD is a LOT of money in that world and we're doing our best to maximize it, so that the final piece looks like a six or seven million dollar animated direct to video epic.
But, if you've got some extra cash laying around, send it over and we'll put it to work.
